Aqua Net\, Lycra\, lace\, and liquor flow freely at one of the Sunset Strips last legendary venues\, a place where sex machine Stacee Jaxx takes the stage and scantily clad groupies line up to turn their fantasies into reality. Amidst the madness\, aspiring rock star (and resident toilet cleaner) Drew longs to take the stage as the next big thing (and longs for small-town girl Sherri\, fresh off the bus from Kansas with stars in her eyes). But the rock ‘n’ roll fairy tale is about to end when German developers sweep into town with plans to turn the fabled Strip into just another capitalist strip mall. Can Drew\, Sherri and the gang save the strip – and themselves – before it’s too late? Only the music of hit bands Styx\, Journey\, Bon Jovi\, Whitesnake and more hold the answer. – Concord Theatricals \n“As the show opens with blinding lights\, shredding guitars and hammer-handed drumming\, even nonbelievers may start inhaling the Aqua Net and embracing their inner rocker.” – Variety \n“A seriously silly\, absurdly enjoyable arena-rock musical… the performances blend sincere conviction and knowing parody. I never would have guessed that wine coolers could age this well!” – New York Times \nROCK OF AGES is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals. www.concordtheatricals.com

UNCG’s Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program celebrates this watershed year with saxophonist Rahsaan Barber joining Jazz Ensemble II for a diverse program of music by Thad Jones\, Dexter Gordon\, Wes Montgomery\, Tito Puente\, Milt Jackson\, Sam Rivers\, and many more. \n\nSince earning a Master’s Degree in Jazz Performance from the Manhattan School of Music in 2005\, Rahsaan Barber (Assistant Professor\, UNC Chapel Hill) has set out on a singular path of musical excellence in performance\, composition\, education\, and entrepreneurship. Rahsaan enjoys a career that encompasses an ever-expanding range of musical styles\, including jazz\, blues\, funk\, classical\, fusion\, soul\, Latin\, and world music. \nRahsaan’s passionate\, sincere\, and studious approach to music-making has garnered professional appearances onstage alongside such heavyweights as Christian McBride\, Brian Blade\, the Temptations\, Delfeayo Marsalis\, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra\, Duffy Jackson\, Winard Harper\, Kirk Franklin\, Meghan Trainor and the Wooten Brothers. The saxophonist has performed on many of the world’s most prestigious stages for music including The Ryman\, The Village Vanguard\, Birdland\, Lincoln Center\, the Kennedy Center\, the Montreux Jazz Festival\, and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. Rahsaan joined the ranks of the nation’s rising jazz stars as the leader of his own quintet\, Everyday Magic\, and co-leader of the groundbreaking Nashville-based Latin-jazz septet El Movimiento. Rahsaan has entered the ranks of the nation’s premier jazz artists following several celebrated releases\, most recently including “Mosaic\,” a double-disc collection of original works released in April of 2021\, featuring trumpeter Nathan Warner and trombonist Roland Barber\, Rahsaan’s twin brother. Prior to the release of “Mosaic\,” Barber received critical acclaim for “The Music In The Night” (2017) and “Everyday Magic\,” (2011) both released on the saxophonist’s record label\, Jazz Music City\, which he founded to showcase his hometown’s (Nashville\, TN) diverse and impressive musical talent. In addition to his own jazz outfits\, the saxophonist founded The Nashville Salsa Machine in 2016\, a twelve-member ensemble featuring Music City’s most celebrated Latin-music performers. Barber is also an in-demand saxophonist for recording sessions and touring work\, most recently completing a year-long tour with pop icon Kelly Clarkson and multiple tours with Lauren Daigle. \nRahsaan currently serves as Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies and Saxophone at the University of North Carolina. Barber has taught extensively at the collegiate level for over a decade\, including six years of instruction at Belmont University\, where he began his collegiate teaching career as instructor jazz and classical saxophone\, jazz ensembles\, and commercial music styles at the impressive age of twenty-five. Barber has given masterclasses and concerts at multiple Jazz Education Network conferences and at numerous colleges and universities\, including the University of Tennessee at Knoxville\, the University of Memphis\, Lipscomb University\, UNC-Pembroke\, UNC-Wilmington\, Indiana University\, The University of Wisconsin (OshKosh)\, the University of Evansville\, and many more. In addition\, Rahsaan has served as Vice-President of the Tennessee Jazz and Blues Society and as a board member for the Nashville Jazz Workshop’s Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion panel. \n\nThe Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program at UNCG is a unique and innovative undergraduate jazz program designed to emulate the traditional process of learning jazz\, through a combination of mentorship\, real-world playing experiences\, and a communal approach to learning. Although the program is housed in one of the largest music schools in the Southeast\, it is kept intentionally small\, resulting in an intensive and highly personalized learning environment. \n\n\n\nAudience Note\nPatrons must sit in their assigned seat. Face coverings that cover the nose and mouth are strongly encouraged\, but not required\, while inside the performance hall. Social distancing is encouraged when possible.

It is one thing to lecture effectively on fine points of operatic interpretation\, but this performer’s characterizations are invaluable lessons in the art of combining unflappable musicality with an adroitness upon the stage that can be observed and thus honed but only very rarely taught to those who do not possess it.” –Voix des Arts \nSince the beginning of his professional operatic singing career in 1978 at the Stadttheater Regensburg\, and later with the Vereinigte Städtiches Bühnen Krefeld/Mönchengladbach in Germany\, bass-baritone\, Donald Hartmann\, continues to be an active performer with regional and national opera companies. In March 2013\, Donald Hartmann made his first venture into the music of Richard Wagner singing Wotan’s Lebewohl and Hans Sachs monologue\, Wahn! Wahn! Überall\, Wahn! As reported in the Classical Voice of North Carolina: “Appearing as soloist…Donald Hartmann of the UNCG faculty\, a serious presence\, and a skilled vocalist producing beautifully-shaped\, deep\, round tones\, displaying a fine instrument\, with a natural delivery and clear diction.” In April 2009\, he created the role of Howard in the world premiere of Libby Larsen’s opera\, Picnic. 2014-2015 included a return to Toledo Opera for Tosca; Sulpice in Daughter of the Regiment for Greensboro Opera; and a debut with Roanoke Opera as Don Magnifico in La Cenerentola. A concert recitalist and oratorio soloist\, Donald Hartmann has sung with the renowned Detroit Symphony Orchestra\, Beethoven Symphony #9 with New Mexico Symphony\, the Verdi Requiem with the Eastern Philharmonic\, Peabody Symphony\, Plymouth Symphony\, and a benefit performance conducted by Neeme Järvi. SUMMARY:Indigo Girls with the Greensboro Symphony
DESCRIPTION:Twenty years after they began releasing records as the Indigo Girls\, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers have politely declined the opportunity to slow down with age. With a legacy of releases and countless U.S. and international tours behind them\, the Indigo Girls have forged their own way in the music business. Selling over 14 million records\, they are still going strong. Amy & Emily are the only duo with top 40 titles on the Billboard 200 in the ’80s\, ’90s\, ’00s and ’10s. \n\n\n\nIn 2012\, Saliers and her Indigo Girls partner\, Amy Ray\, embarked on a bold new chapter\, collaborating with a pair of orchestrators to prepare larger-than-life arrangements of their songs to perform with symphonies around the country. The duo found an elusive sonic sweet spot with the project\, creating a seamless blend of folk\, rock\, pop\, and classical that elevated their songs to new heights without scarifying any of the emotional intimacy and honesty that have defined their music for decades. Now\, after more than 50 performances with symphonies across America\, the experience has finally been captured in all its grandeur on the band’s stunning new album\, Indigo Girls Live With The University of Colorado Symphony Orchestra. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nOrchestra/Mezz\nBalconies\n\n\nUNCG Students\n$5\n$5\n\n\nNon-UNCG Students\n$10\n$10\n\n\nSingle\n$75\n$70\n\n\nSeniors/Military\nFaculty/Staff/Retirees\n$65\n$60\n\n\nPurchase Tickets\n* Tickets to CVPA and UCLS events are sold exclusively through our box office locations and ETix website\, and nowhere else. Tickets purchased through third-party vendors cannot be honored. \n\n\n\n \nThe power of unity\, both in music and in life\, has been an Indigo Girls calling card ever since they burst into the spotlight with their 1989 self-titled breakout album. Since then\, the band has racked up a slew of Gold and Platinum records\, taken home a coveted GRAMMY® Award\, and earned the respect of high profile peers and collaborated from Michael Stipe to Joan Baez. NPR’s Mountain Stage called the group “one of the finest folk duos of all time” while Rolling Stone said “they personify what happens when two distinct sensibilities\, voices\, and worldviews come together to create something transcendentally its own.” \nThe duo has balanced their long\, successful musical career by supporting numerous social causes–the Indigo Girls don’t just talk the talk; they walk the walk. Both on and off the stage\, Emily Saliers and Amy Ray have secured their spot as one of the most legendary musical acts of this generation. \n\nIn addition to public presentations\, every artist in the UCLS series does important work with UNCG students\, such as holding masterclasses and seminars\, often just hours before performing on stage. Thanks to The Cemala Foundation\, some of these artists also work with K-12 students in the Guilford County Schools.

Patrons must sit in their assigned seat. Face coverings that cover the nose and mouth are strongly encouraged\, but not required\, while inside the performance hall.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMusic and spirituality have always been intertwined in the artistic vision of trumpeter\, bandleader\, composer\, educator\, and activist Sean Jones. Mr. Jones sang and performed as a child with the church choir in his hometown of Warren\, Ohio\, and switched from playing the drums to the trumpet at the age of 10. \nMr. Jones is a musical chameleon\, comfortable in any musical setting no matter the role or genre. After a six-month stint with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra\, Wynton Marsalis offered him a permanent position as lead trumpeter of the ensemble\, a post he held from 2004 until 2010. In 2015\, Mr. Jones was tapped to become a member of the SFJAZZ Collective. During this time\, he has managed to keep a core group of talented musicians together under his leadership\, forming the foundation for groups that have produced and released eight recordings on Mack Avenue Records. His most recent is the 2017 release Sean Jones: Live from Jazz at the Bistro. \nMr. Jones has been prominently featured in recordings and performances with many major figures in jazz\, including Illinois Jacquet\, Jimmy Heath\, Frank Foster\, Nancy Wilson\, Dianne Reeves\, Gerald Wilson\, and Marcus Miller. He was selected by Mr. Miller\, Herbie Hancock\, and Wayne Shorter for their A Tribute to Miles tour in 2011. He has also performed with the Cleveland\, Pittsburgh\, and Youngstown symphony orchestras\, as well as Soulful Symphony in Baltimore and a chamber group at the Salt Bay Chamberfest. \nMr. Jones is an internationally recognized educator. He is president of the Jazz Education Network and holds the Richard and Elizabeth Case Chair in Jazz Studies at The John Hopkins University’s Peabody Institute in Baltimore. As well as artistic Director for the NYO JAZZ Program of Carnegie Hall. Previously\, he served as chair of the Brass department at Berklee College of Music in Boston.
