The Tony Award-winning book and score are both enchanting and touching. \nThe story follows a Baker and his wife\, who wish to have a child; Cinderella\, who wishes to attend the King’s Festival; and Jack\, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch’s curse\, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone’s wish is granted\, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results. \nOne of Sondheim’s most popular works\, Into the Woods is a musically sophisticated show with the opportunity to feature actors adept at dark comedy. Designers will especially enjoy highlighting the fantastical elements of this magical word. – Musical Theatre International \n“Into the Woods” is presented through special arrangement with Musical Theatre International (MTI). SUMMARY:The Wind Music of Louis Ballard • Faculty/Student Side-by-Side
DESCRIPTION:DOWNLOAD PROGRAMPROGRAM NOTES\nJonathan Caldwell\, conductor \n\nBALLARD\nRitmo Indio: A Study in American Indian\n Rhythms\nSiouxiana\nDesert Trilogy \n  \n \n\nThe importance of philanthropy has never been greater. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nLouis Ballard (1931–2007)\, in full Louis Wayne Ballard\, Quapaw name Honganózhe (“Grand Eagle”or “Stands With Eagles”)\, was an American composer and music educator best known for compositions that synthesize elements of Native American and Western classical music. \nBallard experienced—and indeed oscillated between—Native American and Western (or Euro-American) musical worlds from an early age. His Quapaw mother and Cherokee father divorced when he was a young boy\, after which Ballard lived alternately with his grandmother on Quapaw tribal territory in northeastern Oklahoma and with his mother and non-Native stepfather in southeastern Michigan. While staying with his grandmother\, he was an active member of the War Dance Society of the Quapaw and participated in powwows and other events in the Native American community. Meanwhile\, his grandmother obtained a piano for him by leasing mineral rights on her Oklahoma property\, and she supported his piano and voice lessons in the Western tradition. \nBallard continued to play the piano while a student in the high-school division of Bacone College in Muskogee\, Oklahoma. By his sophomore year he had mastered some challenging classical repertoire and had begun to perform in public. After graduating from high school in 1949\, he briefly attended the University of Oklahoma (1949–50) and Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College (1950–51) before enrolling in the music program at the University of Tulsa. Ballard sang with the campus Radio Choir throughout his undergraduate studies at Tulsa\, and in 1954 he graduated with two bachelor’s degrees—one in music and the other\, more specifically\, in music education. He then worked as a music director at churches and schools in Tulsa\, Osage\, and Pawhuska\, Oklahoma. In 1959 Ballard returned to the University of Tulsa for graduate study in music composition and received a master’s degree in the discipline in 1962. Following his graduate work\, he studied privately with composers Darius Milhaud\, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco\, Carlos Surinach\, and Felix Labunski. \nWhen the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) opened in 1962\, Ballard joined the staff and directed the organization’s music and performing arts programs through the remainder of the decade. During his time at the IAIA\, he composed prolifically and debuted a number of works that were based on Native American themes. Notable among these were the ballets Koshare (c. 1965)\, which made use of a Hopi creation story\, and The Four Moons (1967)\, which was intended to revive the spirits of four tribes that had come back to Earth. \nFrom his position at the IAIA\, Ballard went on to become a curriculum specialist for the Bureau of Indian Affairs (1969–79). Compositions from this period include Ritmo Indio (1969)\, a woodwind quintet featuring a Native American flute; the highly regarded Desert Trilogy (1971)\, an octet for woodwinds\, strings\, and percussion; and Incident at Wounded Knee (1974)\, a four-movement work for chamber orchestra commemorating the 1890 massacre of the Oglala Sioux at Wounded Knee\, South Dakota\, and the symbolic occupation of the town by members of the American Indian Movement in 1973. Aside from his music compositions\, Ballard published American Indian Music for the Classroom (1973)\, a boxed set of instructional materials that included recordings of Native American music\, music scores\, and a teacher’s guide. \nBallard ultimately developed a national presence\, primarily through concert premieres across the United States. He also achieved international recognition\, most notably through performances of his work at the Beethovenhalle in Bonn\, West Germany (1989)\, and the Salzburg Mozarteum in Austria (2000). Ballard received numerous awards during the course of his career\, not only for his compositions but also for his accomplishments as an educator. In addition\, he was honoured for his contributions to the Native American community and to society as a whole; in 2002 he was awarded a Cherokee Medal of Honor for his service in that capacity.

Aqua Net\, Lycra\, lace\, and liquor flow freely at one of the Sunset Strips last legendary venues\, a place where sex machine Stacee Jaxx takes the stage and scantily clad groupies line up to turn their fantasies into reality. Amidst the madness\, aspiring rock star (and resident toilet cleaner) Drew longs to take the stage as the next big thing (and longs for small-town girl Sherri\, fresh off the bus from Kansas with stars in her eyes). But the rock ‘n’ roll fairy tale is about to end when German developers sweep into town with plans to turn the fabled Strip into just another capitalist strip mall. Can Drew\, Sherri and the gang save the strip – and themselves – before it’s too late? Only the music of hit bands Styx\, Journey\, Bon Jovi\, Whitesnake and more hold the answer. – Concord Theatricals \n“As the show opens with blinding lights\, shredding guitars and hammer-handed drumming\, even nonbelievers may start inhaling the Aqua Net and embracing their inner rocker.” – Variety \n“A seriously silly\, absurdly enjoyable arena-rock musical… the performances blend sincere conviction and knowing parody. I never would have guessed that wine coolers could age this well!” – New York Times \nROCK OF AGES is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals. www.concordtheatricals.com

UNCG’s Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program celebrates this watershed year with saxophonist Rahsaan Barber joining Jazz Ensemble II for a diverse program of music by Thad Jones\, Dexter Gordon\, Wes Montgomery\, Tito Puente\, Milt Jackson\, Sam Rivers\, and many more. \n\nSince earning a Master’s Degree in Jazz Performance from the Manhattan School of Music in 2005\, Rahsaan Barber (Assistant Professor\, UNC Chapel Hill) has set out on a singular path of musical excellence in performance\, composition\, education\, and entrepreneurship. Rahsaan enjoys a career that encompasses an ever-expanding range of musical styles\, including jazz\, blues\, funk\, classical\, fusion\, soul\, Latin\, and world music. \nRahsaan’s passionate\, sincere\, and studious approach to music-making has garnered professional appearances onstage alongside such heavyweights as Christian McBride\, Brian Blade\, the Temptations\, Delfeayo Marsalis\, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra\, Duffy Jackson\, Winard Harper\, Kirk Franklin\, Meghan Trainor and the Wooten Brothers. The saxophonist has performed on many of the world’s most prestigious stages for music including The Ryman\, The Village Vanguard\, Birdland\, Lincoln Center\, the Kennedy Center\, the Montreux Jazz Festival\, and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. Rahsaan joined the ranks of the nation’s rising jazz stars as the leader of his own quintet\, Everyday Magic\, and co-leader of the groundbreaking Nashville-based Latin-jazz septet El Movimiento. Rahsaan has entered the ranks of the nation’s premier jazz artists following several celebrated releases\, most recently including “Mosaic\,” a double-disc collection of original works released in April of 2021\, featuring trumpeter Nathan Warner and trombonist Roland Barber\, Rahsaan’s twin brother. Prior to the release of “Mosaic\,” Barber received critical acclaim for “The Music In The Night” (2017) and “Everyday Magic\,” (2011) both released on the saxophonist’s record label\, Jazz Music City\, which he founded to showcase his hometown’s (Nashville\, TN) diverse and impressive musical talent. In addition to his own jazz outfits\, the saxophonist founded The Nashville Salsa Machine in 2016\, a twelve-member ensemble featuring Music City’s most celebrated Latin-music performers. Barber is also an in-demand saxophonist for recording sessions and touring work\, most recently completing a year-long tour with pop icon Kelly Clarkson and multiple tours with Lauren Daigle. \nRahsaan currently serves as Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies and Saxophone at the University of North Carolina. Barber has taught extensively at the collegiate level for over a decade\, including six years of instruction at Belmont University\, where he began his collegiate teaching career as instructor jazz and classical saxophone\, jazz ensembles\, and commercial music styles at the impressive age of twenty-five. Barber has given masterclasses and concerts at multiple Jazz Education Network conferences and at numerous colleges and universities\, including the University of Tennessee at Knoxville\, the University of Memphis\, Lipscomb University\, UNC-Pembroke\, UNC-Wilmington\, Indiana University\, The University of Wisconsin (OshKosh)\, the University of Evansville\, and many more. In addition\, Rahsaan has served as Vice-President of the Tennessee Jazz and Blues Society and as a board member for the Nashville Jazz Workshop’s Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion panel. \n\nThe Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program at UNCG is a unique and innovative undergraduate jazz program designed to emulate the traditional process of learning jazz\, through a combination of mentorship\, real-world playing experiences\, and a communal approach to learning. Although the program is housed in one of the largest music schools in the Southeast\, it is kept intentionally small\, resulting in an intensive and highly personalized learning environment. \n\n\n\nAudience Note\nPatrons must sit in their assigned seat. Face coverings that cover the nose and mouth are strongly encouraged\, but not required\, while inside the performance hall. Social distancing is encouraged when possible.

It is one thing to lecture effectively on fine points of operatic interpretation\, but this performer’s characterizations are invaluable lessons in the art of combining unflappable musicality with an adroitness upon the stage that can be observed and thus honed but only very rarely taught to those who do not possess it.” –Voix des Arts \nSince the beginning of his professional operatic singing career in 1978 at the Stadttheater Regensburg\, and later with the Vereinigte Städtiches Bühnen Krefeld/Mönchengladbach in Germany\, bass-baritone\, Donald Hartmann\, continues to be an active performer with regional and national opera companies. He has been described as possessing a\, “big\, rich voice with an amazing timbre;” interpretative abilities as “hearty and dramatic;” vocal resonance as “ringing\,” “sepulchral\,” “richly focused;” and “… his flair for comedic bel canto is major-league-worthy.” Having performed in over 135 operatic productions\, in over 55 operas singing over 70 different roles\, he is a commanding leading man and “one of the best character singers on any opera stage anywhere.” With a vast repertoire from works of Mozart\, Puccini\, Verdi\, Donizetti\, Rossini\, Strauss\, Bizet\, Britten\, and many others\, engagements have included appearances with Opéra de Montreal\, Madison Opera\, Toledo Opera\, Opera Carolina\, Michigan Opera Theater\, Nashville Opera\, Piedmont Opera\, Opera Delaware\, North Carolina Opera\, Arizona Opera\, Florentine Opera\, and Virginia Opera Association\, to name a few. In March 2013\, Donald Hartmann made his first venture into the music of Richard Wagner singing Wotan’s Lebewohl and Hans Sachs monologue\, Wahn! Wahn! Überall\, Wahn! As reported in the Classical Voice of North Carolina: “Appearing as soloist…Donald Hartmann of the UNCG faculty\, a serious presence\, and a skilled vocalist producing beautifully-shaped\, deep\, round tones\, displaying a fine instrument\, with a natural delivery and clear diction.” In April 2009\, he created the role of Howard in the world premiere of Libby Larsen’s opera\, Picnic. 2014-2015 included a return to Toledo Opera for Tosca; Sulpice in Daughter of the Regiment for Greensboro Opera; and a debut with Roanoke Opera as Don Magnifico in La Cenerentola. His 2015-2016 season includes Don Magnifico for Greensboro Opera\, Monterone in Rigoletto for Piedmont Opera and two very important national debuts: William Jennings Bryan in the 60th anniversary production of Ballad Baby Doe for Central City Opera in Colorado\, and the Sacristan in Tosca in the historic reopening of New York City Opera’s return to Lincoln Center! A concert recitalist and oratorio soloist\, Donald Hartmann has sung with the renowned Detroit Symphony Orchestra\, Beethoven Symphony #9 with New Mexico Symphony\, the Verdi Requiem with the Eastern Philharmonic\, Peabody Symphony\, Plymouth Symphony\, and a benefit performance conducted by Neeme Järvi. Other engagements include the Mozart Requiem with the Greensboro Symphony\, the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra; Brahms’ A German Requiem; Duruflé Requiem; Handel’s Messiah; Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass and The Seasons.
