This paper develops a set of tools for interpreting soneos\, inviting analysts to examine the sung stories of salsa music as a multivalent tapestry woven of sound\, language\, and gesture. Centering venerated soneros like Benny More\, Celia Cruz\, and Ismael River\, Dr. Mitchell explores standard ways of manipulating vocal styles\, melodic shapes\, rhythmic gestures\, and ensemble relationships on the fly during a soneo improvisation. These techniques combine with the cyclic repetition schemes and linear intensification processes scripted by the arrangement\, giving rise to unique energetic shapes\, which an analyst may then bring into expressive dialogue with the song’s gestural and linguistic media. \n\nDr. Nathaniel Mitchell is Lecturer of Music Theory at the UNC Greensboro School of Music. He comes to the School of Music from Temple University where he was Adjunct Professor of Music Theory. He has also held professional appointments at the University of Delaware and Princeton University in the area of Music Theory. \nMitchell’s research focuses on the cognitive foundations of musical creativity in a variety of genres\, including opera\, bluegrass\, and video games. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nLouis Ballard (1931–2007)\, in full Louis Wayne Ballard\, Quapaw name Honganózhe (“Grand Eagle”or “Stands With Eagles”)\, was an American composer and music educator best known for compositions that synthesize elements of Native American and Western classical music. \nBallard experienced—and indeed oscillated between—Native American and Western (or Euro-American) musical worlds from an early age. His Quapaw mother and Cherokee father divorced when he was a young boy\, after which Ballard lived alternately with his grandmother on Quapaw tribal territory in northeastern Oklahoma and with his mother and non-Native stepfather in southeastern Michigan. While staying with his grandmother\, he was an active member of the War Dance Society of the Quapaw and participated in powwows and other events in the Native American community. Meanwhile\, his grandmother obtained a piano for him by leasing mineral rights on her Oklahoma property\, and she supported his piano and voice lessons in the Western tradition. \nBallard continued to play the piano while a student in the high-school division of Bacone College in Muskogee\, Oklahoma. By his sophomore year he had mastered some challenging classical repertoire and had begun to perform in public. After graduating from high school in 1949\, he briefly attended the University of Oklahoma (1949–50) and Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College (1950–51) before enrolling in the music program at the University of Tulsa. Ballard sang with the campus Radio Choir throughout his undergraduate studies at Tulsa\, and in 1954 he graduated with two bachelor’s degrees—one in music and the other\, more specifically\, in music education. He then worked as a music director at churches and schools in Tulsa\, Osage\, and Pawhuska\, Oklahoma. In 1959 Ballard returned to the University of Tulsa for graduate study in music composition and received a master’s degree in the discipline in 1962. Following his graduate work\, he studied privately with composers Darius Milhaud\, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco\, Carlos Surinach\, and Felix Labunski. \nWhen the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) opened in 1962\, Ballard joined the staff and directed the organization’s music and performing arts programs through the remainder of the decade. During his time at the IAIA\, he composed prolifically and debuted a number of works that were based on Native American themes. Notable among these were the ballets Koshare (c. 1965)\, which made use of a Hopi creation story\, and The Four Moons (1967)\, which was intended to revive the spirits of four tribes that had come back to Earth. \nFrom his position at the IAIA\, Ballard went on to become a curriculum specialist for the Bureau of Indian Affairs (1969–79). Compositions from this period include Ritmo Indio (1969)\, a woodwind quintet featuring a Native American flute; the highly regarded Desert Trilogy (1971)\, an octet for woodwinds\, strings\, and percussion; and Incident at Wounded Knee (1974)\, a four-movement work for chamber orchestra commemorating the 1890 massacre of the Oglala Sioux at Wounded Knee\, South Dakota\, and the symbolic occupation of the town by members of the American Indian Movement in 1973. Aside from his music compositions\, Ballard published American Indian Music for the Classroom (1973)\, a boxed set of instructional materials that included recordings of Native American music\, music scores\, and a teacher’s guide. \nBallard ultimately developed a national presence\, primarily through concert premieres across the United States. He also achieved international recognition\, most notably through performances of his work at the Beethovenhalle in Bonn\, West Germany (1989)\, and the Salzburg Mozarteum in Austria (2000). Ballard received numerous awards during the course of his career\, not only for his compositions but also for his accomplishments as an educator. In addition\, he was honoured for his contributions to the Native American community and to society as a whole; in 2002 he was awarded a Cherokee Medal of Honor for his service in that capacity. His career with the Ciompi includes hundreds of concerts across the U.S. and around the world\, as well as dozens of recordings. He is a founding Artistic Director of Electric Earth Concerts in New Hampshire\, and he directed the Monadnock Music festival from 2007-2011. As an orchestral player he appeared often with the Boston Symphony\, Boston’s Handel and Haydn Society Orchestra\, the New Haven Symphony\, and the New Hampshire Symphony\, where he was principal viola. Currently Chair in the Department of Music\, Bagg has directed the chamber music program at Duke\, and he has served as Director of Undergraduate Studies and Director of Performance. \nSamuel Gold began studying the viola at the age of four with Sherida Josephson of the Des Moines Symphony. He is a graduate of the New England Conservatory\, where he studied primarily with Martha Strongin Katz and Roger Tapping\, and the University of Iowa\, where he studied with Christine Rutledge and Elizabeth Oakes. Gold is currently the principal violist with the North Carolina Symphony. He has performed at the Aspen Music Festival and School\, the Taos School of Music\, and the Montreal International String Quartet Academy. \nScott Rawls has appeared as soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States\, Canada\, Mexico\, Japan\, and Europe. His solo and chamber music recordings can be heard on the Centaur\, CRI\, Nonesuch\, Capstone\, and Philips labels. A strong proponent of new music\, Rawls has premiered dozens of new works by prominent composers. Most notable\, he has toured extensively as a member of Steve Reich and Musicians. During the summer season\, Rawls plays principal in the festival orchestra at Brevard Music Center where he also coordinates the viola program. He was also recently appointed principal viola of the Palm Beach Opera orchestra\, David Stern artistic director. Dr. Rawls currently serves as Professor of Viola and Chamber Music at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He holds a BM degree from Indiana University and a MM and DMA from State University of New York at Stony Brook. \nViolist Suzanne Rousso serves as artistic and the executive leader of Mallarmé Music\, based in Durham. The ensemble is known as one of the region’s most diverse collective of musicians.\nHer previous administrative and educational engagements included service as Director of Operations and Education of the Portland (Maine) Symphony and Director of Education for the North Carolina Symphony. In 2009\, she received a Regional Artist grant from the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County and later a Durham Arts Council’s Emerging Artist grant that enabled her to acquire a baroque viola and enter into the field of historically-informed performance. He was a founding member of the Market Street Brass and the EastWind Quintet. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \nFounded in the spring of 2008\, the UNCG Old-Time Ensemble focuses the learning of American vernacular music traditions\, including American old-time string band music\, American folk songs\, jug band music\, work songs\, blues\, gospel\, shape-note singing\, ballads\, and student compositions which reflect these styles. The Old-Time Ensemble has a long tradition of including both music and non-music majors\, and is open to all UNCG students regardless of major and without an audition. The emphasis is on learning and teaching traditional music through traditional means: including “lined-out” singing\, learning by ear\, learning through jamming\, and learning from the wider old-time and traditional music community in North Carolina. The Old-Time Ensemble has worked with local and national tradition bearers\, including Alan Jabbour and Ken Perlmann\, Peter Rowan\, The Carolina Chocolate Drops\, Rhiannon Giddens\, Riley Baugus\, and Richard Hartness and Tolley Tollefson. The group has performed at the North Carolina Folk Festival\, the Charlie Poole Music Festival\, and other local and regional events.
