SUMMARY:Assemblage
DESCRIPTION:Assemblage\nA UNCG Student Installation Show\nOn View: January 17 – 28\, 2023\n*Reception: Friday\, January 20th\, 6-8PM\n*with a live\, virtual interactive installation by\nRoni Baker\, Sydney Hall\, Jocelyn Marencik\, and Triston Mullis\n  \nAssemblage acts as a gathering place for a collection of seven distinct artists whose artistic processes and exploratory themes interconnect in a symbiotic way\, forming a holistic aesthetic idea – like several unlike objects that fit together as one\, an assemblage. The works in the show allow one to look through a kaleidoscope that represent the webs that weave us all together – a representative patchwork of grief\, trauma\, violence\, rebirth\, memory\, mystery\, knowledge\, play\, and the hope that exists through collective support. Featuring UNCG undergraduate students\, Assemblage invites an art experience through both physical and digital/interactive installation works. The artists investigate concepts through visual\, digital\, and/or textile manipulations in hopes to articulate the interconnectedness of unrelated ideas; we are all more alike than it seems.  \n  \nFeaturing UNCG Student Artists:\nMelanie Antle \nPeter Deligdisch \nBrenda Fonseca- Martinez \nViveka Krumm Castaneda \nTriston Mullis \nDaniel Rogers \nMia Zabala \n  \nTo learn more about the individual artists\, visit our website here \n\nGreensboro Project Space Weekly Gallery Hours: \nTuesday – Friday\, 12 -5 PM \nSaturday\, 2-5PM

SUMMARY:Closing Reception for “Steisha Pintado MFA Exhibition”
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition on View\nWhen: November 15th – November 19th\, 2022\nClosing Reception: November 18th 6:00pm-8:00pm\nWhere: Greensboro Project Space (111 E February One Place) \nGallery Hours: Tuesdays-Fridays\, 12-5pm; Saturdays\, 2-5pm\nSolo Show\, Featuring: Steisha Pintado \n \nYou Will Be With Me in Paradise is a group of mixed media work that explores my experience of being born and raised in a fundamentalist religious cult\, and the aftermath of leaving the cult.  \nAs a Jehovah’s Witness\, I was taught that Armageddon could come at any moment\, and only the true worshippers of Jehovah would survive and receive everlasting life on a Paradise Earth. This Paradise was so vividly depicted in the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ literature that I never had to spend time imagining my own interpretation. The oppressive life as a Jehovah’s Witness always felt more real to me than their promise of Paradise.    \nThe fabric in my work is a vessel of visual and tactile experience that directly relates to memories of my family and to the experience of being shunned. This choice of materials is in dialogue with the practice of arts and crafts that my mother maintained when I was a little girl\, specifically the fabrics she used to sew my Kingdom Hall dresses and the fake flowers she used to make floral arrangements and bouquets. The installation You Will Be With Me in Paradise is my criticism of the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ promise of Paradise\, depicting it as a landscape of plastic plants and flowers and thereby subverting it into a space that I can accept on my own terms. A mirror mounted in this representation invites viewers to see themselves in this literal and figurative space.  \nStrictly following the Ten Commandments\, the Jehovah’s Witnesses do not allow for any iconic imagery in their worship. In keeping with this convention\, I utilize the accidental iconography of cookie-cutter Kingdom Hall spaces\, such as their literature\, carpets\, chairs\, wallpapers\, platforms\, podiums\, microphones\, preaching practices\, double-speak\, and Paradise Earth imagery. \nThis body of work is a longing for the childhood nostalgia of these spaces\, and for the people I left behind in those spaces. While my work is a definite criticism of an oppressive religious cult\, I do not seek to mock its belief system or the spaces in which its operates\, but rather to provide my own sincere interpretation of each. I believe in the freedom of religion\, but unlike the Jehovah’s Witnesses\, I also believe in the freedom to leave a religion without the fear of estrangement\, harassment\, and coercive control. \n  \nMore About Steisha \nI use my work to explore my personal experience of being born and raised in a fundamentalist religious cult\, and the aftermath of leaving the cult. I was taught that Armageddon could come at any moment\, and only the true worshippers of Jehovah would survive and receive everlasting life on a Paradise Earth. My purpose in life was predetermined and designed around being a Jehovah’s Witness. There was room for very little else. It was a life of isolation\, guilt\, and fear. \nMy practice is interdisciplinary\, using drawing\, painting\, puppetry\, and stop motion animation together to unfold a narrative of indoctrination and liberation. Cultic studies research has become the cornerstone of my practice\, which feels quite necessary in the current political climate and state of insurgency in the United States. Although my experience and focus has religious roots\, my research applies across the different practices of undue influence\, indoctrination\, radicalization\, and extremism. There are many common threads woven through the tactics of extremist cults. \nMy work helps me to confront the fact that I am an apostate\, take back my power and my voice\, and speak out against a system of oppression hiding in plain sight. I make this work for myself\, for others who have also had these experiences\, and to create a public awareness around these issues. I use this work to celebrate how I have forcefully taken the things that I had been denied since birth: an education\, a career\, a voice\, a free life where two plus two always equals four. \n  \nLearn more about Steisha and her work at www.steishapintado.com or follow her @steishapintado \n https://www.greensboroprojectspace.com/blog-post/2022-mfa-thesis-exhibition-steisha-pintado1

SUMMARY:Closing Reception for ‘Zaire Miles-Moultrie’
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition on View\nWhen: November 1st – November 12th\, 2022\nClosing Reception: TBD\nWhere: Greensboro Project Space (111 E February One Place) \nGallery Hours: Tuesdays-Fridays\, 12-5pm; Saturdays\, 2-5pm\nSolo Show\, Featuring: Zaire Miles-Moultrie \nMore About The Lion\, The Jackal\, and The Man \nLearning about Africa\, its people\, cultures\, history\, its reach and its effects across the world is not an easy task to do but once you start it’s almost impossible to stop. As an artist it is a wonderland that I enjoy exploring and taking what I learned and transforming it into works of art. This is an experience that I am so glad and appreciative to have however\, while learning about the wonders of Africa I also had learn about the terrible beauties\, misconceptions\, perversions\, abuse\, and other heinous aspects that Africa and its people had to endure from Western Nations /Colonizers  and from within. From this comes The Lion\, The Jackal\, and The Man a solo art exhibition that explores the cultures\, histories\, and peoples within Africa. The works in The Lion\, The Jackal\, and The Man is a direct acknowledgement of the beautiful\, the good\, the bad\, and the inconceivables of the history and cultures within Africa.  \nThe Works within The Lion\, The Jackal\, and The Man comprise of surreal collages\, drawings\, illustrations\, and prints of original art by Zaire Miles-Moultrie. Each piece aims to tackle a wide range of subject matters while also enticing the viewer to come up and look closer at each piece that is on display. Ultimately the aim of this exhibition is to expose the viewer to the many cultures and peoples of Africa while acknowledging and combating their own ideologies\, perceptions\, and biases regarding Africa.  \n  \nMore About Zaire \nZaire Miles-Moultrie was born in the sunny state of California but raised and grown in the old North State of North Carolina. At a young age he was introduced to the world of art through comic books and his love for the arts grew immensely throughout the years. After picking up his first pencil and drawing his very first line he was never able to stop himself from learning more about his passions and himself. Currently Zaire is enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) pursuing his degrees in Entrepreneurship and a B.F.A. in studio art with a concentration in Printmaking and Drawing. At the moment he has an interest in researching and learning more about modern Afro-Centric artists\, art\, and sustainable art and business practices. \nAs I grow as an artist I always want to continue to grow my sources of inspirations whether it be from paintings\, sculptures\, cultures\, histories\, peoples\, etc. By using printmaking and drawing as my medium of choice I can express myself\, my voice\, and message in a multitude of ways while also paying homage to inspirations. My art\, designs\, drawing\, and prints are collages of the many ideologies that I have come to learn\, accept\, and embody like blackness\, negritude\, intellectualism\, love\, and allyship. This leads me to combat harmful and hateful ideologies that go against my very core as an artist and as a human being.   \nhttps://www.greensboroprojectspace.com/blog-post/the-lion-the-jackal-and-the-man

SUMMARY:Closing Reception for ‘Unboxed: an Anti-Exhibit’
DESCRIPTION:Unboxed: an Anti-Exhibit\nA Group Show Featuring UNCG Student Artists\n  \nCurated by GPS Interns Peter Deligdisch and Abby Weatherholtz\nNovember 8 – 12\, 2022\n  \nReception: Friday\, November 11th\, 6-8PM\nwith live demo from artist\, Kristen Dixon\n   \nMore About The Show \n“Unboxed: an Anti-Exhibit” is a collaborative show featuring work by undergraduate CVPA students at UNCG and curated by GPS student interns\, Peter Deligdisch and Abby Weatherholtz. The show challenges the traditional use of gallery space\, bringing into question what type of work “deserves” to be placed in a spotlight and how artwork is “supposed” to be displayed in a professional setting. We use imaginative methods of installation to construct an anti-exhibit that can be experienced in an exciting and unconventional manner. We hope that this show will allow for an accessible experience for everyone who comes to it with an open mind and ready hands to play. \n  \nMore About Abby  \nAbby Weatherholtz is a senior simultaneously pursuing a B.F.A. in Painting and Drawing and a B.S. in Psychology. She is interested in multi-media and textural work such as impasto painting\, paper folding and manipulating\, collage\, textiles\, and others. Her concepts discuss LGBTQIA+ rights\, mental health\, and the intimacy involved in domestic life. \n  \nCuratorial Thoughts from Peter  \nThe struggle of defining art has been going on for as long as anyone can remember. As an undergrad intern at GPS this semester\, I’ve been granted a glimpse at the role that art galleries play in this effort. Contrary to the way we usually interact with art out in the world\, galleries and museums most often display art in a sterile and pristine environment. There are obvious benefits in this kind of presentation\, but after a while it starts to subconsciously enforce an idea of exclusivity. The idea that only that which is exhibited a certain way is art\, and everything else is not. “Unboxed”\, is a small attempt to present art in a more inclusive way that works against that trend. SUMMARY:Unboxed: an Anti-Exhibit
An anti-exhibit. \n  \nFeaturing UNCG Student Artists:\nKyla Fisher  \nKristen Dixon  \nBrenda Fonseca Martinez \nEllison Rauch  \nShayla Scales  \nBjorn Bates  \nCaitlin Parris   \nJoseph Hodge  \nAshe Smith  \nEden Wells  \nAlaina Hooks \nLuna Roberts  \nBeyonce Kee   \nSophia Dominici  \nWesley Durham   \nIris Choi  \nMontana Norman   \nMarvin Cano \n \nhttps://www.greensboroprojectspace.com/blog-post/unboxed-an-anti-exhibit

SUMMARY:Zaire Miles-Moultrie Exhibition @ Greensboro Project Space

SUMMARY:William Suits Exhibition @ Greensboro Project Space
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition on View\nWhen: October 25th- October 29th\, 2022\nClosing Reception: October 28th 6:00pm-8:00pm\nWhere: Greensboro Project Space (111 E February One Place) \nGallery Hours: Tuesdays-Fridays\, 12-5pm; Saturdays\, 2-5pm\nSolo Show\, Featuring: William Mangum (William Mangum Awardee)   \nMore About Lindwyrm  \nLindwyrm is a series of digital prints to be viewed in sequential order. The series was conceived as a comic book adaptation of the Scandinavian fairy tale “Prince Lindworm.” Inspired by the works of Neil Gaiman and Tsutomu Nihei\, this series tells the story of a young woman thrust into a deadly marriage arraignment\, with only her wits and the wisdom of an old crone to save her. \nIn adapting a fairy tale for a modern audience\, the opportunity for change is opened up. It allows for the artist to internalize the original story and restructure it to better suit their own values and views on the world. When adapting “Prince Lindworm” I took a story that makes moral statements on chastity and turned it into one that celebrates the love between mother and child and displays the struggles of revealing one’s most intimate self in a new romance. \n  \nMore About William  \nAs an artist I think of myself firstly as a storyteller. I believe that stories are the lifeblood of our society. They teach us to think beyond ourselves and imagine countless unseen worlds. We find comfort in the knowledge that the hero will save the day or that the romantic leads will find happiness together. They connect us together\, as we spend hours theorizing what will come next in our favorite series. It was because of such stories that I was first drawn to art. As a teenager I would spend hours inventing worlds and characters with a close group of friends. We created without shame or concerns of originality. I try to recapture that freedom to create without restriction in my artistic practice. I constantly work to abandon thoughts of what others might think and simply create something that I will enjoy. \nhttps://www.greensboroprojectspace.com/blog-post/lindwyrm

His retrospective of photo-collages\, paintings\,sculptures\, videos\, and installations spans almost forty years\, with many showntogether for the first time. His artistic expression explores the ideasconnecting his research interests without having to resort to the fixedmeanings required in academic language.  \nGrieve uses collage\, assemblage\, montage\, andinstallation–techniques originally employed by the early 20thcentury avant-guard movements. The Dadaists\, Surrealists\, and earlyConceptualists reinvented the role of artist with strategies to battle ossifiedinstitutions. Their materials and techniques could satirize social conventions\,undermine the certainty of rationality\, or embody the sensory and informationaloverload that was part of modernization. Similarly\, Grieve uses found photographic images\, many from the Library of Congress\,and found objects\, combining them to create apersonal language. Their layering\,superimposition\, transparency\, and montage unify his source materials with a new logic. The resulting aestheticis one of free-associative flows\, lucid dreaming\, and humor with titles thatplay with etymology\, imply conceptual readings\, or make cross-disciplinaryreferences to add an additional layer of interpretation. \n In this electric moment\, as thephysical atomizes into data and perception into pixels\, Grieve’s retrospective isnot just a collection of objects. It’s an archive of a life understanding itself. SUMMARY:North Carolina Dance Festival Performance @ Greensboro Project Space
DESCRIPTION:Intimate Performance by NC Dance Festival Trailblazer Awardee Tommy Noonan of Culture Mill as he presents the US premiere of “Assembly”.\nWhen: October 6th – October 7th\, 2022\, 7pm \nWhere: Greensboro Project Space (111 E February One Place)  \nNCDF Trailblazer Awardee Tommy Noonan of Culture Mill presents the US premiere of “Assembly.” “Assembly” derives from Noonan’s work with NC-based artists\, activists and Restorative Justice specialists\, and exists in ongoing conversation with 5 other socially engaged dance artists from 5 other countries around the world\, all tied together by a single performance score from Norwegian/Israeli Artist/Activist Mia Habib.  As a hybrid installation\, performance and social practice\, “Assembly” invites audiences to consider the land where they gather: all that is not named in the past\, all that might come to pass in the future\, and all the ways in which distributive power exists differently in each present moment when bodies assemble. “Assembly” is a production of Culture Mill with support from Mia Habib Productions and Dance Project\, also supported by The Norwegian Arts Council and Nordic Culture Fund – Globus Opstart. \n \nhttps://danceproject.org/ncdf/

SUMMARY:Closing Reception for “EYE SITE”
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition on View\nWhen: September 20th – October 1st\, 2022 \nClosing Reception: September 30th 6-8pm\nWhere: Greensboro Project Space (111 E February One Place) \nGallery Hours: Tuesdays-Fridays\, 12-5pm; Saturdays\, 2-5pm\nMore About EYE SITE \nEYE SITE is a selection of recent works by Greensboro native James Clemmons. The works elected here are exemplary moments of an ongoing investigation of symbol and form derived from the language of everyday life\, developed from a vested interest in the visually syntactic language of the varied printmaking processes. The work is the direct result of not only the deconstruction of language but also an inquiry of symbols. \nThese works exist between domains: not quite drawing\, printed matter\, or painting in the traditional sense. There is an aesthetic thread present linking the work\, but the inherent textual information displayed within the works is so deeply embedded and\, in some cases\, altogether hidden from view. \nThe intense obfuscation of language and image present in these works can create unique moments where one may be forced into suspending that inescapable desire to make sense of words and phrases\, and instead take notice of the formal elements of the pictorial imagery.  \nMore About James  \nJames Clemmons is a multidisciplinary artist and North Carolina native\, based in Greensboro\, NC. Formally equipped with an educational background situated within traditional printmaking and drawing\, his approach to the two-dimensional discipline of painting exhibits less classical language and representation. Instead\, the formal aspect of the work has more to do with the endless prose of daily life. \nJames’ work is a fighting combination of poetic references and interwoven fields of form and color. The effort of his work magnifies the unlimited idiosyncrasies of text and symbols that\, often overlooked\, await activation. His impulse is an attempt to reveal the beautiful\, chaotic\, and puzzling qualities somewhat hidden within the otherwise arbitrary forms of the spoken and visual language systems that we all take part in. \n \nhttps://www.greensboroprojectspace.com/blog-post/eye-site

SUMMARY:Exhibit Reception for “Coming Soon?”
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition on View\nWhen: September 20- October 1st\, 2022\nReception: September 23rd 6:00pm-8:00pm\nWhere: Greensboro Project Space (111 E February One Place) \nGallery Hours: Tuesdays-Fridays\, 12-5pm; Saturdays\, 2-5pm\nGroup Show\, Featuring: Adam Carlin with Derek ToomesMore About Coming Soon? \nComing Soon? is a socially engaged art project that uses techniques in speculative and science fiction for diverse communities in Greensboro\, North Carolina to imagine how empty storefronts and uninhabited commercial properties could serve their communities. During collaborative visioning sessions with the artist Adam Carlin\, graphic designer Irvin Maldonado\, and students in Derek Toomes’ Interior Architecture Department at UNC Greensboro\, each community will design a pseudo institution that could or should exist in Downtown Greensboro.Coming soon signs for these fictionalized spaces will then be installed on vacant properties as temporary public art pieces\, publicly projecting a potential future that is inclusive and accessible for those who are often under-represented. These ambiguous yet thought-provoking installations will allow the public to pause and contemplate who our current city is truly for\, and will empower the constituents of a city to own a future that is often prescribed rather than collectively created. \nAdam CarlinAdam Carlin is a curator\, educator\, administrator and social practice artist. He is currently the Director of Learning & Engagement at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse\, NY. He is also co-Director of the artist project\, the Greensboro Contemporary Jewish Museum\, a decentralized museum that explores the intersections between contemporary art practices and southern Jewish life. Carlin was previously the Director of Community Engagement for UNC Greensboro’s College of Visual and Performing Arts and Director of UNCG’s off-campus contemporary art center Greensboro Project Space. Other notable projects Carlin co-Founded and co-Directed include Creek Colleges\, an organization that created schools on the banks of rivers\, lakes\, and creeks that are going through active restoration and Some Thing Spacious\, an experimental project space in Oakland\, CA that focused on participatory art practices. He received a BFA from California College of the Arts and an MFA in Art and Social Practice from Portland State University.Carlin’s practice draws from a variety of histories and lineages. From community organizing principles defined in the civil rights era; to the expanded field of sculpture; to the contemporary canon of socially engaged arts. But first and foremost his practice draws from that which is right in front of him. He makes both permanent and ephemeral projects that are created in context to the external environment\, be that a community\, a history\, a situation\, a place\, or a person. The projects act as platforms for these constituents to tell their stories\, to express their own creativity\, and to contribute to a collective idea or action. Some of his personal works often take the form of institutes as artworks which grants artists the power to not only create institutions of their own but to radically reimagine institutional practices in order to counter systemic inequalities that are embedded into the tradition of the arts. Working simultaneously as a curator\, educator\, administrator\, and socially engaged artist\, Carlin’s artistic projects have taken the forms of schools\, colleges\, museums\, departments\, and various other institutions whose qualities he has co-opted as a container for participatory projects for the public. \nDerek ToomesDerek Toomes is an artist based in Greensboro and Raleigh\, NC. Derek is drawn to the iconic imagery of popular culture\, as he is equally interested in societal location as a culture inundated by imagery. His sourcing as well as appropriation of images allows Derek to create work that is aesthetically and anthropologically situated within culture\, while also commenting on that culture. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Interior Architecture at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. \nIrvin MaldonadoIrvin Maldonado is a Latine artist currently based in Greensboro\, North Carolina\, passionate about the creative process and visualizing communication. With an educational background specializing in fine arts\, he employs photography\, graphic design\, and video to produce work that inspires viewers.https://www.greensboroprojectspace.com/blog-post/coming-soon
