Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nThe UNCG Symphony Orchestra is a highly select ensemble of approximately ninety performers majoring in music. Performers include undergraduates through masters and doctoral candidates in music performance and music education. Membership in the organization is highly competitive\, and all students are placed by audition. Members of the Symphony have achieved numerous individual honors including solo competition awards on regional and national levels\, music scholarships\, undergraduate teaching fellowships\, graduate assistantships and fellowships\, and membership in honors ensembles. \nThe UNCG Symphony Orchestra periodically tours the state and region\, and has recently performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington\, DC. A recent review in the Classical Voice of North Carolina described the Orchestra’s performance as\, “dramatic and incisive\,” and “beautifully done.” \nIn addition to the performances of standard orchestral literature\, the Symphony Orchestra often collaborates with the UNCG Choirs to present a major choral/orchestral work. Faculty\, as well as winners of the annual Student Artist Competition\, are often featured as soloists. The Symphony combines with the School of Music Opera Theatre and the UNCG School of Theatre to perform a fully staged opera production each spring semester. Although the program is housed in one of the largest music schools in the Southeast\, it is kept intentionally small\, resulting in an intensive and highly personalized learning environment.

Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nSteve Stusek\, saxophone\, is Associate Professor of Music at the University of North Carolina Greensboro\, where he is a member of the Eastwind Quintette d’Anches and the Red Clay Saxophone Quartet. Originally from Oshkosh\, Wisconsin\, he received his Bachelor’s degree in saxophone performance from Indiana University. Before beginning a Master’s degree in saxophone and chamber music at Arizona State University\, Steve spent a year in Paris studying at the Paris Conservatory (Conservatoire Nationale Superior de Musique de Paris) and the Conservatoire de le Région de Paris\, where he was awarded the Prix d’Or à l’Unanimité in Saxophone Performance. After living in the Netherlands for almost eight years he returned to Indiana University and was awarded a DMA in Saxophone in 2001. He has served on the faculties of Ball State University\, Middlebury College\, the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. He has been on the UNCG faculty since 1999. As a soloist\, Steve has appeared with the Eastern Music Festival and more recently with the University of South Carolina Wind Ensemble as part of the North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial conference. He has been the principal saxophonist for the Eastern Music Festival and the Greensboro Symphony for the past ten years. In 2000\, he won the prestigious Dutch Chamber Music Competition as part of the saxophone-accordion duo 2Track with accordion virtuoso Otine van Erp. Together they have performed throughout the Netherlands\, the US and on Dutch radio. Steve teamed up with pianist Inara Zandmane and saxophonist Susan Fancher to produce the critically acclaimed recording Louder than Words – music for two saxophones and piano. Steve’s teachers have included Eugene Rousseau\, Joseph Wytko\, David Baker\, Larry Teal\, Daniel Deffayet\, Jean-Yves Formeau\, and Leroy Wolter. Steve is the Past-President of the North American Saxophone Alliance. \n\nHailed for his “exquisite artistry\,” “stunning interpretations” and “flawless performances\,” New-Zealand-born bassoonist Michael Burns enjoys a multi-faceted career as a performer\, teacher and composer. \nAn active performer\, Burns enjoys roles as a soloist\, in chamber groups\, and orchestrally with numerous recent performances at International Double Reed Society conventions\, recitals and masterclasses throughout North America\, Germany\, Italy\, China and the South Pacific. He performs as principal bassoon with the Asheville Symphony and the North Carolina Opera and as bassoonist in the EastWind Ensemble and Blue Mountain Forecast. He also performs regularly with regional groups such as the Greensboro\, Charlotte\, and North Carolina Symphonies and as a guest with the Ciompi Quartet and Mallarme Chamber Players. \nHe has recorded for the Centaur\, CAP\, Telarc\, EMI\, Klavier\, and Mark labels and his solo CD Primavera: Music for Bassoon and Piano by Bassoonists\, was released to critical acclaim on the Mark Masters label. A new CD Glass Ghosts is scheduled for release in 2020. He performed extensively with the Cincinnati and New Zealand Symphony Orchestras\, the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra\, and he held Principal positions with the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra and the Midland/Odessa\, Richmond\, and Abilene Symphonies. Burns plays on a Moosmann 222CL 5SC Thin Wall bassoon. \nBurns’ primary position is as Professor of bassoon at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In summers\, he has been associated with several Festivals including the Clazz International Music Festival in Tuscany\, Italy\, Eastern Music Festival\, The Summer Bassoon Extravaganza\, Music for All/Bands of America Summer Symposium\, the Affetti Festival\, New England Music Camp and the Bocal Majority and Operation O.B.O.E. Prior to accepting the position at UNCG\, he also taught at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory\, Indiana State University and Midland College. \nHe is an active composer with many of his pieces being published by TrevCo Music\, Potenza Music and Effiny Music and frequently performed internationally. Additionally\, he has published articles and reviews in the Double Reed (the journal of the International Double Reed Society)\, the TBA Journal (Texas Bandmasters’ Association)\, the NC Music Educator (journal of the NC Music Educators’ Association for which he served as Woodwind Notes Editor for over a decade)\, and Notes (the journal of the Music Library Association). His mentors include William Winstead\, Sherman Walt\, Leonard Sharrow\, Sidney Rosenberg\, and Colin Hemmingsen. Having graduated from the Manhattan School of Music in the first class of Pinchas Zukerman\, she is active as a recitalist\, chamber musician\, and teacher. Marjorie has also performed as soloist with the Utah Symphony\, Idaho Falls Symphony\, Ann Arbor Symphony\, the University of Michigan Symphony\, and the Washington Square Music Series. As first violinist and founding member of the Arcata String Quartet\, Marjorie performed in the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie\, London’s Wigmore Hall\, and across Western Europe and the United States. She is also an active proponent for new music and has premiered works by Paul Chihara\, David Noon\, Nils Vigeland\, and Judith Shatin. Through her travels to music festivals\, Marjorie has had the opportunity to play with some of the great artists of our time including Pinchas Zukerman\, Itzhak Perlman\, Joseph Kalichstein\, members of the Guarneri\, Emerson\, American\, Tokyo\, and Borromeo String Quartets. Ms. Bagley can be heard on recordings for the VOX\, New World and Summit labels\, and a recording of music for violin and percussion on the Equilibrium label featuring a concerto by Lou Harrison. Marjorie is the Co-Director of the Juniper Chamber Music Festival in Logan\, Utah\, which is becoming one of the most elite chamber music festivals in the nation. Prior to joining the faculty at Temple\, she was the Director of Bands at Cal State Fullerton where she conducted the Wind Symphony\, Symphonic Winds\, and taught courses in conducting and music education. She was also a Visiting Assistant Professor at SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music. \nCornett taught at Essex High School in Essex Junction\, Vermont from 2007–2010 where she conducted three concert bands\, jazz band\, and taught courses in guitar and history of rock. She was also the Director of Instrumental Music at Woodland Regional High School in Beacon Falls\, Connecticut\, from 2003–2005. She is published in the Teaching Music Through Performance in Band series\, the CBDNA Journal\, and has presented sessions at national CBDNA conferences\, as well as numerous state conferences. She is a member of the College Band Directors National Association\, the Conductors Guild\, the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association\, and the National Association for Music Education. \n\nDr. Andrea E. Brown was appointed the Associate Director of Bands at the University of Maryland in 2018. In this position she conducts the University of Maryland Wind Ensemble and serves as the Director of Athletic Bands in which she leads the “Mighty Sound of Maryland” and all aspects of the athletic band program. Brown is formerly a member of the conducting faculty at the University of Michigan where she served as the assistant director of bands. In this position\, she was the conductor of the Campus Bands and director of the Campus Band Chamber Ensembles\, associate director of the Michigan Marching and Athletic Bands\, director of the Men’s Basketball Band\, guest conductor with the Symphony Band and Concert Band\, taught conducting\, and was a faculty sponsor of a College of Engineering Multidisciplinary Design Project team researching conducting pedagogy technology. Previously Brown was the director of orchestra and assistant director of bands at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta where she also led research in conducting pedagogy technology and was a member of the Oxford Program faculty. She is a frequent guest conductor\, clinician\, and adjudicator in the US\, Europe\, and Asia. \nBrown completed a DMA in instrumental conducting at UNC Greensboro where she was a student of John Locke and Kevin Geraldi. While at UNCG\, she was named Outstanding Teaching Assistant and was both guest conductor and principal horn on UNCG Wind Ensemble’s fireworks! and finish line! CDs released on the Equilibrium label. Brown has also had several rehearsal guides published in the popular GIA Publications series\, “Teaching Music Through Performance in Band” and has presented at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago\, Music For All Summer Symposium\, the Yamaha Bläserklasse in Schlitz\, Germany\, the International Computer Music Conference in Ljubljana\, Slovenia\, the College Music Society International Conference in Sydney\, Australia\, and multiple times at the College Band Directors National Association National Conference. \nA proponent of inclusion and equity issues in the music profession\, Brown is a frequent guest speaker on these topics. She currently serves on the CBDNA Gender and Ethnic Minority Committee\, and as a member of the recently formed Drum Corps International Women’s In Step Committee. Brown is also the founder of “Women Rising to the Podium” – an online group of 2300 members supporting and celebrating women band directors. She also serves the chair of the Sigma Alpha Iota Women’s Music Fraternity Graduate Conducting Grant. \nBrown currently serves as a brass consultant for Phantom Regiment and Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps. She has been on the brass and conducting instructional staff of the DCI World Champion Phantom Regiment since 2004. Other marching organizations with which she has instructed are the U.S. Army All-American Marching Band\, Carolina Crown\, Kennesaw Mountain High School (GA)\, Father Ryan High School (TN)\, and McGavock High School (TN). \nAs a performer\, Brown was a member of the AA Brass Quintet\, which won the International Brass Quintet Competition hosted by Fred Mills at the University of Georgia. She performed with the horn sections of the Boston Brass All Stars Big Band\, North Carolina Symphony\, Winston-Salem Symphony\, and the Brevard Music Center Orchestra. Brown has studied brass performance and pedagogy with Abigail Pack\, Jack Masarie\, Freddy Martin\, J.D. Shaw\, Dottie Bennett\, Randy Kohlenberg\, Richard Steffen\, and Ed Bach. \nOriginally from Milan\, Tennessee\, she is a graduate of Austin Peay State University where she was named “Outstanding Student in Music.” Brown earned a master of music degree in horn performance and a master of music education degree with a cognate in instrumental conducting from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Prior to her position at Georgia Tech\, Brown was the assistant director of bands at Austin Peay State University and taught public school in Milwaukee\, Wisconsin\, and Dallas\, Texas. She is a member of Phi Kappa Phi\, Pi Kappa Lambda\, and CBDNA. She was awarded the Rose of Honor as a member of Sigma Alpha Iota and is an honorary member of Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma.

Performers in the current Wind Ensemble are drawn from sixteen states\, Slovenia\, and Hong Kong. The ensemble has enjoyed a distinguished record of performance throughout its history. In January 1992\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed “A Tribute to John Philip Sousa” to a capacity crowd of 2\,700 at the Concert Hall of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington\, D.C. Twice\, the Wind Ensemble earned critical acclaim from The Washington Post following concerts in the nation’s capital. The Wind Ensemble has performed throughout the eastern United States in recent years including the first-ever performance\, in 1987\, by a North Carolina collegiate ensemble in Lincoln Center\, New York City. The Wind Ensemble performed that same year in West Virginia\, Virginia\, Pennsylvania\, and Washington\, D.C. The Wind Ensemble has recorded nineteen commercially-available albums which have received widespread praise. \nIn 1985\, the Wind Ensemble performed a series of concerts with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer-conductor Karel Husa. In 1988\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed in New Orleans\, Louisiana by invitation of the College Band Directors National Association for the Southern Division convention. On a number of occasions\, the Wind Ensemble has commissioned and premiered works from leading band composers. In November of 1990\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the Southern Division of MENC convention. In February 1994\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed for a convention of the CBDNA and NBA in Williamsburg\, Virginia. In March 1999\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the national convention of the American Bandmasters Association in Melbourne\, Florida. In February 2000\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the CBDNA Southern Division Convention hosted at UNCG. In 2006\, the Wind Ensemble performed in The Music Center at Strathmore in Bethesda\, Maryland\, shared a concert with the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” in Arlington\, Virginia\, and collaborated with Karel Husa\, David Dzubay\, and Carter Pann in the performaces of their music\, including two commissions. In 2009\, the Wind Ensemble performed at the CBDNA National Convention at the University of Texas at Austin and performed additional concerts in Georgia\, Alabama\, Louisiana\, and Texas as part of a week-long tour. The Wind Ensemble performed at the 2011 National Convention of the American Bandmasters Association and the 2013 National Conference of the College Band Directors National Association hosted in Greensboro. Face coverings that cover the nose and mouth are strongly encouraged\, but not required\, while inside the performance hall. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nSoprano Theresa “Teri” Bickham has been praised for her “expressive legato line” and “fine piano nuances.” She made her European debut singing scenes from La Traviata under the direction of Maestro Eduardo Müller. Dr. Bickham has performed with opera companies throughout the United States including Houston Grand Opera\, Opera New Jersey\, Opera in the Heights\, Loudoun Lyric Opera\, and Opera Camerata of Washington. She has performed a diverse repertory of operatic roles that include a specialization in Mozart heroines (Donna Anna\, La Countessa\, Fiordiligi)\, Italian opera (Adina\, Violetta\, Musetta)\, German operetta (Rosalinde\, Hanna Glawari)\, and contemporary American opera (A Bird in Your Ear\, The Beautiful Bridegroom.) \nDr. Bickham is a frequent guest artist in the United States and Europe. Recent concert appearances include works by Vivaldi\, Bach\, Mozart\, Handel\, Brahms\, Rossini\, Orff\, Vaughn Williams and numerous orchestral pops performances. In competition\, Dr. Bickham was an international semi-finalist in the Concorso Lirico Internazionale per Cantanti lirici Rosa Ponselle in Caiazzo\, Italy. She has also been the winner of national and regional competitions including: The Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions-Mid-Atlantic Regional Finalist\, Palm Beach Opera Semi-Finalist\, Shreveport Opera Singer of the Year Finalist\, MD/DC National Association of Teachers of Singing\, and the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Houston. \nAn avid recitalist\, Dr. Bickham has performed recital tours in Maryland\, Virginia\, Texas\, Washington DC\, and most recently as a part of the Bellingham Music Club in Washington state. Her passion for art song has led to diverse programs specializing in repertoire written for specific voices and the exploration of the performer’s role in the creation of music. \nDr. Bickham’s performance experience has culminated in her passion for training young professionals. Her students have been recognized for their polished performances and exemplary teaching. Former students have attended prestigious schools that include The Juilliard School\, Indiana University\, the University of Maryland\, the University of Tennessee\, the University of Denver Lamont School of Music\, Bard College Conservatory of Music\, Ithaca College\, Boston Conservatory\, and Roosevelt University. In addition\, they have won prizes with the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions\, Annapolis Opera\, the National Society of Arts and Letters\, National Association of Teachers of Singing\, and the Classical Singer competitions. Many students are performing professionally with such companies as The Metropolitan Opera\, Opera Theater of St. Louis\, Marilyn Horne: The Song Continues Masterclass Series at Carnegie Hall\, Annapolis Opera\, Knoxville Opera\, New York Lyric Opera\, Disney Cruise Lines\, and Creativiva Entertainment. \nDr. Bickham is proud of the many music educators that she has taught. Her former students are passionate and respected educators throughout Maryland\, Virginia\, Pennsylvania\, Texas\, and other areas in the United States. \nDr. Bickham holds degrees from the University of Maryland College Park (DMA)\, the University of Houston (MM)\, and Towson University (BM). She received additional training as a young artist at Opera New Jersey and AIMS in Graz. Dr. Bickham taught at Towson University for thirteen years before joining the faculty of the University of North Carolina Greensboro as an Assistant Professor of Voice in 2019.

Orchestra. Ronald has also performed at music festivals across the US and Europe\, including the Ghent Festival\, Edinburgh International Festival\, Eastern Music Festival\, Cambridge Music Festival\, Wimbledon Music Festival\, and London’s BBC Proms. \nWhen Ronald isn’t performing on stage\, he works as an on-set violin coach for Hollywood actors. Recently\, he worked with actor Kelvin Harrison Jr. who stars in the new film Chevalier\, directed by Stephen Williams and written by Stefani Robinson. This story is based on the life of the titular French-Caribbean musician Joseph Bologne\, Chevalier de Saint-Georges. DESCRIPTION:DOWNLOAD PROGRAM\n\n\n\n\nAudience Note\nFace coverings that cover the nose and mouth are strongly encouraged\, but not required\, while inside the performance hall. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nWilliam LaRue Jones is “one of the most active and versatile symphonic conductors in America today\, possessing a unique ability to work effectively with musicians at all levels of performing capability and experience” (Minneapolis Star-Tribune).  His conducting schedule includes a wide array of professional\, festival\, collegiate and student ensembles throughout North America\, Latin America\, Europe\, and Asia\, ranging from the Minnesota Orchestra and the Minneapolis Pops to the Penang (Malaysia) Symphony\, the Antofagasta (Chile) Symphony\, and the Symphony Orchestra of Lucerne (Switzerland) to the Orquestra Sinfonia do Theatro da Paz (Belem\, Brazil). He returns annually to China to conduct orchestras and present conducting master classes. Recent engagements include conducting orchestras in the Chinese cities of Beijing\, Shanghai\, Wuhan\, Xi’an\, Nanning\, Shenyang\, Zhengzhou\, Shijiazhuang\, Tianjin\, Nanchang\, Sichuan\, and Hong Kong. Other orchestras in Asia include Singapore\, and in the Malaysian cities Kuala Lumpur\, Ipoh\, Kedah\, and Penang. In addition\, Jones has conducted over 100 all-state orchestras with additional festivals and clinics in each of the 50 United States and each Canadian province. \nAs a professional performer\, noted for his outstanding technique and musicality\, Jones was principal bassoon of the Minnesota Opera and Minnesota Ballet\, and was first call associate with the Minnesota Orchestra and Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra for over 15 seasons. He has performed under such esteemed maestros as Stanislaw Skrowaczewski\, Klaus Tennstedt\, Antol Dorati\, Charles Dutoit\, Aaron Copland\, Zubin Mehta\, Neville Marriner\, Edo deWaart\, Daniel Barenboim\, and Leonard Slatkin\, to name a few. \nSince 1997\, Dr. Jones has been professor of music\, director of orchestral studies and conductor of orchestras and opera at the University of Iowa (Iowa City). In 2008/9\, the State of Iowa and the University of Iowa selected Dr. Jones for the Regents Award for Faculty Excellence. He was also appointed an Obermann Scholar and a Stanley International Fellow in 2008. In 2011\, he received the designation of Collegiate Fellow in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. \nDr. Jones is currently music director/conductor of the Ottumwa Symphony Orchestra. He has previously held the position of music director/conductor of the Oshkosh Symphony Orchestra\, Bloomington (MN) Symphony Orchestra. He holds the titles of founder and conductor laureate of Greater Twin Cities’ Youth Symphonies (MN) and conductor emeritus of the 3M Symphony. \nFor his untiring work on behalf of music and arts education\, he has been honored with the 2013 “Medal of Honor” presented by the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic (Chicago). In addition\, he has received the American String Teachers Associations Exceptional Leadership and Merit Award\, the David W. Preuss Leadership Award\, the Sigma Alpha Iota Musician of the Year Award\, WCCO Radio “Good Neighbor Award” and the State of Minnesota Governors’ Proclamation of “Dr. William LaRue Jones Week”. \nRecognition of Jones’ outstanding gestural skills and score analysis has made him a sought-after teacher of conducting.  He is the founding artistic director of the critically acclaimed Conductors Workshop of America and was the lead member of the conducting faculty of the International Workshops where he also served as conductor of the International String Orchestra. Jones has also presented conducting seminars/workshops internationally for professional/educational associations in Japan\, Norway\, Australia\, Scotland\, Austria\, Germany\, Malaysia\, Switzerland\, France\, Brazil\, and China. \nIn 1972\, Dr. Jones founded the Greater Twin Cities’ Youth Symphonies (MN) which he guided to international acclaim during a 25-year tenure. The program became a model for youth orchestra structures worldwide\, comprised of eight full orchestras involving over 1000 students annually. \nA Texas native\, Dr. Jones holds degrees from the University of Wisconsin\, University of Iowa and Kansas State University\, with additional studies at The Juilliard School of Music and the University of North Texas.

DESCRIPTION:RESERVE TICKETSDOWNLOAD PROGRAM\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBorn in Dalian\, China\, Mengfei Xu was admitted to the pre-college program at Shenyang Conservatory of Music at age twelve. Xu earned performance degrees from Xinghai Conservatory of Music\, Ithaca College\, and UNC Greensboro. Currently\, Xu is completing her graduate studies at Yale Institute of Sacred Music. Her primary teachers include Andrew Willis (piano and historical keyboards)\, Charis Dimaras (piano)\, James O’Donnell (organ)\, Carole Terry (organ)\, Craig Cramer (organ)\, André Lash (organ)\, Marya Fancey (organ)\, and Jean Radice (organ and harpsichord). Her doctoral dissertation entitled “Organ Influences on Selected French Piano Works from the 1880s to the 1920s (2021)” is available on ProQuest. As a performer\, Xu holds a particular interest in compositions written by female and underappreciated composers. As a soloist\, Xu performed piano concertos with Shenzhen Philharmonic Orchestra\, Ithaca College Symphony Orchestra\, and UNCG Symphony Orchestra. As an organist\, Xu performed in Greater Greensboro Chapter of American Guild of Organists (AGO) organ recital in 2016. She was awarded numerous scholarships from multiple organizations\, including 2016 Richard VanSciver Church Music Scholarship by Metropolitan Music Ministries\, 2017 Montréal Organ Festival Young Organist Scholarship by Royal Canadian College of Organists\, 2018 AGO National Convention Young Organist Scholarship\, and 2022 Charles Ives Prize for outstanding organ student by Yale School of Music. As an active chamber musician\, Xu has been working with instrumentalists and vocalists for two decades. She has served as staff pianist for Bennett College Choir and voice studios from 2017 to 2020\, multiple voice competitions and auditions\, and was recognized with outstanding vocal accompanist awards. \n\n\nAudience Note\nTickets are required to attend any concert or recital in person.
