SUMMARY:GPS Student Residency Program Summer Studios: Arts on Site!
DESCRIPTION:Greensboro Project Space Presents its Inaugural Cohort for its new Student Residency Program\nSummer Studios: Arts on Site!\n\nSupporting UNCG student artists as they forge new directions in their creative practices over a two-week incubation period\n  \nSession #1: May 8 – 20\, 2023*\nPublic Open Studio: Friday\, May 12th | 12-5P\nPublic Open Studio: Tuesday\, May 16th | 12-3P\nClosing Open House: Friday\, May 19th | 6-8P\n  \nDesigned to support UNCG undergraduate student artists (BA + BFA) striving to develop\, adapt\, and/or reinvent their creative process and to promote artistic growth and development\, artists are afforded two-weeks of uninterrupted research and development\, coupled with financial support and public presentational platforms to share their creative work. \nThe students selected represented those proposals who best considered how to use this residency as a way to work towards new or expanded approaches in their making practices. We are pleased to accept the following artists into this summer’s program and to contribute to new directions in their artistic practice. \n  \nSession #1 Artists in Residence (May 8-20\, 2023) \nOliver Coria (he/him; sculpture) will experiment with creating an installation by covering the ceiling\, floor\, walls\, and symbolically appropriate objects with the artificial grass\, in a body of work called “American Homeowners Association\,” an exposition of obsessive appearances through obsessive lawn care. \nAnna (AK) Deese (any except she/her; art history/social practice) will use social practice methodologies to meet with locals and listen to their stories\, while simultaneously drawing charcoal and pastel portraits of them. \nErnest Kroi (he/him; drawing/painting) will begin working on writing and illustrating a series of three children’s stories about the absurd but morally innocent adventures of Cat and Owl\, two regally and eccentrically clad friends who live in a treehouse in the forest of Clovernook above the seafaring town of Doverbrook. \nAmiah Jones (she/her; painting) will work with a model to paint two sides of the same person as a diptych. The content of each side will be determined by the model\, rather than the artist\, based on how they choose to represent themselves. \n  \n*Note: the gallery will not be open during regular public hours  these two weeks; the gallery will only be open during the above dates/times for public engagement events \nThis student opportunity was made possible by our Founding Sponsor\, Maggie Triplett.

SUMMARY:Trash Art: A Mini Residency
DESCRIPTION:Art Trash: A Mini Residency\nGrace Clark\nJune 19 – 23\, 2023\nPublic Open Studio Hours:\nWednesday\, June 21st | 1-3P\nThursday\, June 22nd | 1-3P\nFriday\, June 23rd | 1-3P\n\n\nI will be working on a series that will utilize trash taken from museum settings (primarily MASS MoCA) as material to recreate art installation scenes from my time working as an art fabricator/installer. Many of these scenes are fleeting moments throughout the installation and maintenance team’s everyday work\, where tools and supplies lay in space in a way that makes me immediately think of it as minimalist\, abstract sculpture. The arrangements aren’t meant to be art\, but the people behind them are true craftsmen\, many with their own creative practices as well. I wonder if by recreating these scenes and calling them art\, we may be able to more adequately elevate the work of those that are so necessary for exhibitions to exist\, but so often go unseen. \nMore About Grace \nGrace Clark is a visual and social practice artist whose work is centered in a deeply diaristic narrative of metabolizing love\, loss\, and labor. She reflects upon these themes within her experiences as a museum worker\, educator\, mediator\, patient\, and daughter to contemplate ways of living\, feeling\, and wishful thinking. Sculptural\, text\, and photographic media\, often including found and natural objects\, play fundamental roles in her practice as she navigates and interprets a variety of landscapes––attempting to organize a spiritual space within the natural\, question the cultural\, and map her own interior. \nwww.graceclarkart.com or follow on IG: @graceannclark \n  \nTo learn more about the artist\, visit our website here \n  \nGreensboro Project Space Weekly Hours for June 21-23: \nWednesday\, June 21st | 1-3P\nThursday\, June 22nd | 1-3P\nFriday\, June 23rd | 1-3P

SUMMARY:lust(rous) Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:lust(rous)\nHeidi Zenisek\nJuly 25 – 29\, 2023\nReception: Friday\, July 28th\, 6-8PM\nWe have evolved to seek and value all that glitters and shines\, whether it’s the thrill we feel when we see a vivid color\, a gleaming surface\, or shards of light— that need to see it\, touch it\, have it\, goes all the way down to the bone. This work plays into our evolutionary chemical and emotional response to sparkle and color by using an iridescent film. The materiality of the film lures us in by taking advantage of one of our first and most basic human instincts: to be drawn to the glittering ripples across the surface of water. This instinctual attraction similarly plays a role in our fascination with natural phenomena such as the aurora borealis\, galaxies\, rainbows\, the dazzle of a diamond\, or the flecks in an opal. This work impersonates these curious occurrences and attempts to mimic the inexplicable isness of nature. \nThese pieces have been made or assembled on site responding to the space\, to the light emanating from other pieces\, to the sun moving across the gallery throughout the day and how they transition with the dark of night. The film is transparent in certain light causing it to layer on top of its surroundings. At other angles\, it becomes opaque and mirrored so the surroundings now adorn its surface\, creating an art object in itself while also becoming enmeshed with the space. It mimics\, converses\, and contrasts the environment it occupies. \n\nTo learn more about the artists\, visit our website here \nGreensboro Project Space Weekly Gallery Hours: \nTuesday – Friday\, 12 -5 PM \nSaturday\, 2-5PM

SUMMARY:The Wind Music of Louis Ballard • Faculty/Student Side-by-Side
DESCRIPTION:DOWNLOAD PROGRAMPROGRAM NOTES\nJonathan Caldwell\, conductor \n\nBALLARD\nRitmo Indio: A Study in American Indian\n Rhythms\nSiouxiana\nDesert Trilogy \n  \n \n\nThe importance of philanthropy has never been greater. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nLouis Ballard (1931–2007)\, in full Louis Wayne Ballard\, Quapaw name Honganózhe (“Grand Eagle”or “Stands With Eagles”)\, was an American composer and music educator best known for compositions that synthesize elements of Native American and Western classical music. \nBallard experienced—and indeed oscillated between—Native American and Western (or Euro-American) musical worlds from an early age. His Quapaw mother and Cherokee father divorced when he was a young boy\, after which Ballard lived alternately with his grandmother on Quapaw tribal territory in northeastern Oklahoma and with his mother and non-Native stepfather in southeastern Michigan. While staying with his grandmother\, he was an active member of the War Dance Society of the Quapaw and participated in powwows and other events in the Native American community. Meanwhile\, his grandmother obtained a piano for him by leasing mineral rights on her Oklahoma property\, and she supported his piano and voice lessons in the Western tradition. \nBallard continued to play the piano while a student in the high-school division of Bacone College in Muskogee\, Oklahoma. By his sophomore year he had mastered some challenging classical repertoire and had begun to perform in public. After graduating from high school in 1949\, he briefly attended the University of Oklahoma (1949–50) and Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College (1950–51) before enrolling in the music program at the University of Tulsa. Ballard sang with the campus Radio Choir throughout his undergraduate studies at Tulsa\, and in 1954 he graduated with two bachelor’s degrees—one in music and the other\, more specifically\, in music education. He then worked as a music director at churches and schools in Tulsa\, Osage\, and Pawhuska\, Oklahoma. In 1959 Ballard returned to the University of Tulsa for graduate study in music composition and received a master’s degree in the discipline in 1962. Following his graduate work\, he studied privately with composers Darius Milhaud\, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco\, Carlos Surinach\, and Felix Labunski. \nWhen the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) opened in 1962\, Ballard joined the staff and directed the organization’s music and performing arts programs through the remainder of the decade. During his time at the IAIA\, he composed prolifically and debuted a number of works that were based on Native American themes. Notable among these were the ballets Koshare (c. 1965)\, which made use of a Hopi creation story\, and The Four Moons (1967)\, which was intended to revive the spirits of four tribes that had come back to Earth. \nFrom his position at the IAIA\, Ballard went on to become a curriculum specialist for the Bureau of Indian Affairs (1969–79). Compositions from this period include Ritmo Indio (1969)\, a woodwind quintet featuring a Native American flute; the highly regarded Desert Trilogy (1971)\, an octet for woodwinds\, strings\, and percussion; and Incident at Wounded Knee (1974)\, a four-movement work for chamber orchestra commemorating the 1890 massacre of the Oglala Sioux at Wounded Knee\, South Dakota\, and the symbolic occupation of the town by members of the American Indian Movement in 1973. Aside from his music compositions\, Ballard published American Indian Music for the Classroom (1973)\, a boxed set of instructional materials that included recordings of Native American music\, music scores\, and a teacher’s guide. \nBallard ultimately developed a national presence\, primarily through concert premieres across the United States. He also achieved international recognition\, most notably through performances of his work at the Beethovenhalle in Bonn\, West Germany (1989)\, and the Salzburg Mozarteum in Austria (2000). Ballard received numerous awards during the course of his career\, not only for his compositions but also for his accomplishments as an educator. In addition\, he was honoured for his contributions to the Native American community and to society as a whole; in 2002 he was awarded a Cherokee Medal of Honor for his service in that capacity.

SUMMARY:“Elements of Soneo Theory: Vocal Improvisation Strategies in Salsa Music” • Irna Priore Music and Culture Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:IRNA PRIORE LECTURE SERIES\n \n\nThe importance of philanthropy has never been greater. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\nSalsa music’s soneos are improvisatory spaces in which lead singers (soneros) perform impressive feats of vocal pyrotechnics in cyclic alteration with a choral refrain. This paper develops a set of tools for interpreting soneos\, inviting analysts to examine the sung stories of salsa music as a multivalent tapestry woven of sound\, language\, and gesture. Centering venerated soneros like Benny More\, Celia Cruz\, and Ismael River\, Dr. Mitchell explores standard ways of manipulating vocal styles\, melodic shapes\, rhythmic gestures\, and ensemble relationships on the fly during a soneo improvisation. These techniques combine with the cyclic repetition schemes and linear intensification processes scripted by the arrangement\, giving rise to unique energetic shapes\, which an analyst may then bring into expressive dialogue with the song’s gestural and linguistic media. \n\nDr. Nathaniel Mitchell is Lecturer of Music Theory at the UNC Greensboro School of Music. He comes to the School of Music from Temple University where he was Adjunct Professor of Music Theory. He has also held professional appointments at the University of Delaware and Princeton University in the area of Music Theory. \nMitchell’s research focuses on the cognitive foundations of musical creativity in a variety of genres\, including opera\, bluegrass\, and video games. His research has appeared in Music Theory Spectrum (“The Volta: A Galant Gesture of Culmination”)\, the Oxford Handbook of Public Music Theory (“/r/musictheory: Making Music Theory on Reddit.com”)\, and SMT-Pod (“Moderating Musical Discussions on Reddit: An Interdisciplinary Conversation”)\, and a video essay on the Animal Crossing video game series is forthcoming in SMT-V. \nMitchell received his PhD in Music from Princeton University\, where his dissertation on musical form in eighteenth-century opera was awarded the Holmes/ D’Accone Dissertation Fellowship from the American Musicological Society. He also holds an MM in Music Theory from Indiana University as well as a BM in Piano Performance and Music Theory from Furman University.

SUMMARY:Jacqueline Wilson\, bassoon • Guest Artist Recital
DESCRIPTION:DOWNLOAD PROGRAM\nJacqueline Wilson\, bassoon\nSophia Tegart\, flute\nFabio Mescetti\, piano \n \n\nThe importance of philanthropy has never been greater. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nBassoonist Dr. Jacqueline Wilson is an active performer\, pedagogue\, collaborator\, and advocate. She currently serves as Principal Bassoonist of the Washington Idaho Symphony and Assistant Professor of Bassoon at Washington State University where she performs with the Solstice Faculty Wind Quintet. As an active soloist and chamber musician\, she regularly presents recitals\, masterclasses\, and clinics including engagements at the International Double Reed Society Conference (Boulder\, CO\, Tampa\, FL\, Columbus\, GA\,)\, the International Alliance for Women in Music Conference (Corvallis\, OR)\, the Meg Quigley Bassoon Symposium (Tucson\, AZ\, Los Angeles\, CA)\, and the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York\, NY). She is also a founding member of Ensemble 337\, an innovative bassoon and marimba duo with percussionist Dr. Christopher Wilson. An eager contributor to the double reed community\, Dr. Wilson currently serves as Vice President of the International Double Reed Society\, a Co-Executive Director of the Meg Quigley Vivaldi Competition and Bassoon Symposium\, and co-hosts the Double Reed Dish podcast with oboist Dr. Galit Kaunitz. \nAs an avid supporter of new music\, Dr. Wilson (Yakama) frequently collaborates with composers on the creation of new works to expand the repertoire of the bassoon. She is especially passionate about embracing diversity in her performances by elevating music featuring underrepresented perspectives and lived experiences\, with a special focus on collaborating with Indigenous composers. In this capacity\, she has premiered\, commissioned\, and recorded works by composers Juantio Becenti\, Connor Chee\, Louis W. Ballard\, and Raven Chacon\, among others. These efforts can be heard on her debut album\, Works for the Bassoon by Native American Composers (WSU Recordings). Expansion of this work was supported by a WSU New Faculty Seed Grant in the form of an international Indigenous artistic collaboration with Māori composers\, as well as an Artist Trust Fellowship to fund the commissioning of a concerto for bassoon and strings by Connor Chee. She also actively composes new pieces and creates resources that facilitate the performance of works from the 20th century and beyond. Wilson’s composition Dance Suite for Solo Bassoon was awarded the 2022 PatsyLu Prize for outstanding work by a BIPOC composer in the 41st Search for New Music Competition by the International Alliance for Women in Music. Her article\, “Strategies for Learning Luciano Berio’s Sequenza XII\,” co-authored with Dr. Christin Schillinger (Ithaca College)\, has been published in The Double Reed and the Journal de L’Association Bassons (France). Similarly\, her dissertation\, an analysis and performance guide of Sofia Gubaidulina’s Concerto for Bassoon and Low Strings\, has been utilized by noteworthy bassoonists worldwide. \nDr. Wilson holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Bassoon Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Iowa. She is also a graduate of Boston University’s College of Fine Arts and Eastern Washington University. Her principal teachers include Benjamin Coelho\, Matthew Ruggiero\, and Lynne Feller-Marshall.
