UNCG’s Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program celebrates this watershed year with saxophonist Rahsaan Barber joining Jazz Ensemble II for a diverse program of music by Thad Jones\, Dexter Gordon\, Wes Montgomery\, Tito Puente\, Milt Jackson\, Sam Rivers\, and many more. \n\nSince earning a Master’s Degree in Jazz Performance from the Manhattan School of Music in 2005\, Rahsaan Barber (Assistant Professor\, UNC Chapel Hill) has set out on a singular path of musical excellence in performance\, composition\, education\, and entrepreneurship. Rahsaan enjoys a career that encompasses an ever-expanding range of musical styles\, including jazz\, blues\, funk\, classical\, fusion\, soul\, Latin\, and world music. \nRahsaan’s passionate\, sincere\, and studious approach to music-making has garnered professional appearances onstage alongside such heavyweights as Christian McBride\, Brian Blade\, the Temptations\, Delfeayo Marsalis\, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra\, Duffy Jackson\, Winard Harper\, Kirk Franklin\, Meghan Trainor and the Wooten Brothers. The saxophonist has performed on many of the world’s most prestigious stages for music including The Ryman\, The Village Vanguard\, Birdland\, Lincoln Center\, the Kennedy Center\, the Montreux Jazz Festival\, and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. Rahsaan joined the ranks of the nation’s rising jazz stars as the leader of his own quintet\, Everyday Magic\, and co-leader of the groundbreaking Nashville-based Latin-jazz septet El Movimiento. Rahsaan has entered the ranks of the nation’s premier jazz artists following several celebrated releases\, most recently including “Mosaic\,” a double-disc collection of original works released in April of 2021\, featuring trumpeter Nathan Warner and trombonist Roland Barber\, Rahsaan’s twin brother. Prior to the release of “Mosaic\,” Barber received critical acclaim for “The Music In The Night” (2017) and “Everyday Magic\,” (2011) both released on the saxophonist’s record label\, Jazz Music City\, which he founded to showcase his hometown’s (Nashville\, TN) diverse and impressive musical talent. In addition to his own jazz outfits\, the saxophonist founded The Nashville Salsa Machine in 2016\, a twelve-member ensemble featuring Music City’s most celebrated Latin-music performers. Barber is also an in-demand saxophonist for recording sessions and touring work\, most recently completing a year-long tour with pop icon Kelly Clarkson and multiple tours with Lauren Daigle. \nRahsaan currently serves as Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies and Saxophone at the University of North Carolina. Barber has taught extensively at the collegiate level for over a decade\, including six years of instruction at Belmont University\, where he began his collegiate teaching career as instructor jazz and classical saxophone\, jazz ensembles\, and commercial music styles at the impressive age of twenty-five. Barber has given masterclasses and concerts at multiple Jazz Education Network conferences and at numerous colleges and universities\, including the University of Tennessee at Knoxville\, the University of Memphis\, Lipscomb University\, UNC-Pembroke\, UNC-Wilmington\, Indiana University\, The University of Wisconsin (OshKosh)\, the University of Evansville\, and many more. In addition\, Rahsaan has served as Vice-President of the Tennessee Jazz and Blues Society and as a board member for the Nashville Jazz Workshop’s Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion panel. \n\nThe Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program at UNCG is a unique and innovative undergraduate jazz program designed to emulate the traditional process of learning jazz\, through a combination of mentorship\, real-world playing experiences\, and a communal approach to learning. My sculpture has always drawn heavily from Modernism\, and now I am starting to filter that influence through a lens that feels more directly related to my being. As I am constructing these works\, I feel I am revealing myself to myself in a deeper way. My rural upbringing in Bethany\, North Carolina and the resonance of that place and the objects that rest throughout that land are cornerstones of what informs my sculptural decisions. Many materials and objects from that place have made their way into the works in this exhibition. A quasi-pastoral aesthetic that gives way to entropy and decay is an important facet of the imagery I make. I see that decay as a potentially uplifting thing\, however\, because I am curious about the engagement with nature. Seeing the natural world as an embodied system in dialogue with our stuff is what I am working towards. Filled with whimsical narratives and symbolic rigor\, the work near the end of my Grad School experience started to zero in on working within an ever shifting\, cubular space that referenced my direct surroundings\, and a figure or character that resembled myself and embodied the emotional turbulence of a post-sobriety wake (a character that I have come to call hodgepodge). Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n\n\n\n\n \nSFC James J. Miller (’08 MM) is originally from Pontiac\, Michigan. He joined Pershing’s Own in December 2013. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina – Columbia; a master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro\, where he was a graduate assistant and a Professional Artist Certificate from the North Carolina School of the Arts. Miller has been a prizewinner in numerous flute competitions including: MTNA Young Artist\, SC Flute Society. He was the winner of the Concerto Competition at both the University of South Carolina and University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He has performed with the Western Piedmont Symphony\, Fayetteville Symphony\, Winston-Salem Symphony\, and Nova Chamber Orchestra. He has also been a featured soloist at the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston\, SC and London International Poetry Festival in London\, England. Miller joined the Army in July 2011. Before joining Pershing’s own he served in the 8th United States Army Band in Seoul\, Korea and The United States Training and Doctrine Command band at Ft. Eustis\, VA. SFC Miller is in active soloist\, chamber musician and clinician. When not making music he enjoys volunteering\, running\, cooking\, and traveling.
