DESCRIPTION:Exhibition on View\nWhen: November 1st – November 12th\, 2022\nClosing Reception: TBD\nWhere: Greensboro Project Space (111 E February One Place) \nGallery Hours: Tuesdays-Fridays\, 12-5pm; Saturdays\, 2-5pm\nSolo Show\, Featuring: Zaire Miles-Moultrie \nMore About The Lion\, The Jackal\, and The Man \nLearning about Africa\, its people\, cultures\, history\, its reach and its effects across the world is not an easy task to do but once you start it’s almost impossible to stop. As an artist it is a wonderland that I enjoy exploring and taking what I learned and transforming it into works of art. This is an experience that I am so glad and appreciative to have however\, while learning about the wonders of Africa I also had learn about the terrible beauties\, misconceptions\, perversions\, abuse\, and other heinous aspects that Africa and its people had to endure from Western Nations /Colonizers  and from within.From this comes The Lion\, The Jackal\, and The Man a solo art exhibition that explores the cultures\, histories\, and peoples within Africa. The works in The Lion\, The Jackal\, and The Man is a direct acknowledgement of the beautiful\, the good\, the bad\, and the inconceivables of the history and cultures within Africa.  \nThe Works within The Lion\, The Jackal\, and The Man comprise of surreal collages\, drawings\, illustrations\, and prints of original art by Zaire Miles-Moultrie. Each piece aims to tackle a wide range of subject matters while also enticing the viewer to come up and look closer at each piece that is on display. Ultimately the aim of this exhibition is to expose the viewer to the many cultures and peoples of Africa while acknowledging and combating their own ideologies\, perceptions\, and biases regarding Africa.  \n  \nMore About Zaire \nZaire Miles-Moultrie was born in the sunny state of California but raised and grown in the old North State of North Carolina. At a young age he was introduced to the world of art through comic books and his love for the arts grew immensely throughout the years. After picking up his first pencil and drawing his very first line he was never able to stop himself from learning more about his passions and himself. Currently Zaire is enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) pursuing his degrees in Entrepreneurship and a B.F.A. in studio art with a concentration in Printmaking and Drawing. At the moment he has an interest in researching and learning more about modern Afro-Centric artists\, art\, and sustainable art and business practices. \nAs I grow as an artist I always want to continue to grow my sources of inspirations whether it be from paintings\, sculptures\, cultures\, histories\, peoples\, etc. By using printmaking and drawing as my medium of choice I can express myself\, my voice\, and message in a multitude of ways while also paying homage to inspirations. My art\, designs\, drawing\, and prints are collages of the many ideologies that I have come to learn\, accept\, and embody like blackness\, negritude\, intellectualism\, love\, and allyship. The show challenges the traditional use of gallery space\, bringing into question what type of work “deserves” to be placed in a spotlight and how artwork is “supposed” to be displayed in a professional setting. We use imaginative methods of installation to construct an anti-exhibit that can be experienced in an exciting and unconventional manner. We hope that this show will allow for an accessible experience for everyone who comes to it with an open mind and ready hands to play. \n  \nMore About Abby  \nAbby Weatherholtz is a senior simultaneously pursuing a B.F.A. in Painting and Drawing and a B.S. in Psychology. She is interested in multi-media and textural work such as impasto painting\, paper folding and manipulating\, collage\, textiles\, and others. Her concepts discuss LGBTQIA+ rights\, mental health\, and the intimacy involved in domestic life. \n  \nCuratorial Thoughts from Peter  \nThe struggle of defining art has been going on for as long as anyone can remember. As an undergrad intern at GPS this semester\, I’ve been granted a glimpse at the role that art galleries play in this effort. Contrary to the way we usually interact with art out in the world\, galleries and museums most often display art in a sterile and pristine environment. There are obvious benefits in this kind of presentation\, but after a while it starts to subconsciously enforce an idea of exclusivity. The idea that only that which is exhibited a certain way is art\, and everything else is not. “Unboxed”\, is a small attempt to present art in a more inclusive way that works against that trend. DESCRIPTION:Exhibition on View\nWhen: October 25th- October 29th\, 2022\nClosing Reception: October 28th 6:00pm-8:00pm\nWhere: Greensboro Project Space (111 E February One Place) \nGallery Hours: Tuesdays-Fridays\, 12-5pm; Saturdays\, 2-5pm\nSolo Show\, Featuring: William Mangum (William Mangum Awardee)   \nMore About Lindwyrm  \nLindwyrm is a series of digital prints to be viewed in sequential order. The series was conceived as a comic book adaptation of the Scandinavian fairy tale “Prince Lindworm.” Inspired by the works of Neil Gaiman and Tsutomu Nihei\, this series tells the story of a young woman thrust into a deadly marriage arraignment\, with only her wits and the wisdom of an old crone to save her. \nIn adapting a fairy tale for a modern audience\, the opportunity for change is opened up. It allows for the artist to internalize the original story and restructure it to better suit their own values and views on the world. When adapting “Prince Lindworm” I took a story that makes moral statements on chastity and turned it into one that celebrates the love between mother and child and displays the struggles of revealing one’s most intimate self in a new romance. \n  \nMore About William  \nAs an artist I think of myself firstly as a storyteller. I believe that stories are the lifeblood of our society. They teach us to think beyond ourselves and imagine countless unseen worlds. We find comfort in the knowledge that the hero will save the day or that the romantic leads will find happiness together. They connect us together\, as we spend hours theorizing what will come next in our favorite series. It was because of such stories that I was first drawn to art. As a teenager I would spend hours inventing worlds and characters with a close group of friends. We created without shame or concerns of originality. I try to recapture that freedom to create without restriction in my artistic practice. DESCRIPTION:Exhibition on View\nWhen: October 11th- October 22nd\, 2022\nClosing Reception: October 21st 6:00pm-8:00pm\nWhere: Greensboro Project Space (111 E February One Place) \nGallery Hours: Tuesdays-Fridays\, 12-5pm; Saturdays\, 2-5pm\nSolo Show\, Featuring: Greg Grieve \n23 Chunks of Being – A Retrospective  \nThe Dungeon Master ofMeanings \nAs a major contributor to the emerging study of religion andvideo games\, Gregory Price Grieve\, Head of the Religious Studies Department atThe University of North Carolina at Greensboro\, researches and teaches Asianreligions and popular culture. His retrospective of photo-collages\, paintings\,sculptures\, videos\, and installations spans almost forty years\, with many showntogether for the first time. His artistic expression explores the ideasconnecting his research interests without having to resort to the fixedmeanings required in academic language.  \nGrieve uses collage\, assemblage\, montage\, andinstallation–techniques originally employed by the early 20thcentury avant-guard movements. The Dadaists\, Surrealists\, and earlyConceptualists reinvented the role of artist with strategies to battle ossifiedinstitutions. Their materials and techniques could satirize social conventions\,undermine the certainty of rationality\, or embody the sensory and informationaloverload that was part of modernization. Similarly\, Grieve uses found photographic images\, many from the Library of Congress\,and found objects\, combining them to create apersonal language. Their layering\,superimposition\, transparency\, and montage unify his source materials with a new logic. The resulting aestheticis one of free-associative flows\, lucid dreaming\, and humor with titles thatplay with etymology\, imply conceptual readings\, or make cross-disciplinaryreferences to add an additional layer of interpretation. \n In this electric moment\, as thephysical atomizes into data and perception into pixels\, Grieve’s retrospective isnot just a collection of objects. It’s an archive of a life understanding itself. During collaborative visioning sessions with the artist Adam Carlin\, graphic designer Irvin Maldonado\, and students in Derek Toomes’ Interior Architecture Department at UNC Greensboro\, each community will design a pseudo institution that could or should exist in Downtown Greensboro.Coming soon signs for these fictionalized spaces will then be installed on vacant properties as temporary public art pieces\, publicly projecting a potential future that is inclusive and accessible for those who are often under-represented. These ambiguous yet thought-provoking installations will allow the public to pause and contemplate who our current city is truly for\, and will empower the constituents of a city to own a future that is often prescribed rather than collectively created. \nAdam CarlinAdam Carlin is a curator\, educator\, administrator and social practice artist. He is currently the Director of Learning & Engagement at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse\, NY. He is also co-Director of the artist project\, the Greensboro Contemporary Jewish Museum\, a decentralized museum that explores the intersections between contemporary art practices and southern Jewish life. Carlin was previously the Director of Community Engagement for UNC Greensboro’s College of Visual and Performing Arts and Director of UNCG’s off-campus contemporary art center Greensboro Project Space. Other notable projects Carlin co-Founded and co-Directed include Creek Colleges\, an organization that created schools on the banks of rivers\, lakes\, and creeks that are going through active restoration and Some Thing Spacious\, an experimental project space in Oakland\, CA that focused on participatory art practices. He received a BFA from California College of the Arts and an MFA in Art and Social Practice from Portland State University.Carlin’s practice draws from a variety of histories and lineages. From community organizing principles defined in the civil rights era; to the expanded field of sculpture; to the contemporary canon of socially engaged arts. But first and foremost his practice draws from that which is right in front of him. He makes both permanent and ephemeral projects that are created in context to the external environment\, be that a community\, a history\, a situation\, a place\, or a person. The projects act as platforms for these constituents to tell their stories\, to express their own creativity\, and to contribute to a collective idea or action. Some of his personal works often take the form of institutes as artworks which grants artists the power to not only create institutions of their own but to radically reimagine institutional practices in order to counter systemic inequalities that are embedded into the tradition of the arts. SUMMARY:“To Light and Then Return” Exhibition @ Greensboro Project Space
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition on View \nWhen: September 13th- September 17th\, 2022 \nWhere: Greensboro Project Space (111 E February One Place) \nGallery Hours: Tuesdays-Fridays\, 12-5pm; Saturdays\, 2-5pm \nSolo Show\, Featuring: Helen Jones \nMore About To light and then returnTo light and then return is an examination of the things we carry with us\, both emotionally and physically\, across lands from place to place. Taking its name from a short poem\, almost a fragment\, written on the back of an envelope by Emily Dickinson\, this work marvels at the magic and mistakes of photography\, meditates on loss\, and places value on the everyday sediments of our lives. \nSublime large-format landscapes and still lifes of teeth and ashes share space with washed-out snapshots and aged ephemera\, words of wisdom\, shopping lists\, and favorite poems copied by hand—items inherited when the artist’s parents passed. These combinations make space for new meanings; a piece of carbon paper becomes the night sky\, two awkwardly positioned rocks are bodies supporting one another\, and light flares and glares become spirits populating the images. \nAbout Helen JonesHelen Jones holds an MFA from the University of Texas\, Austin\, and a BFA in Photography from the Massachusetts College of Art. She spent the intervening years in Oregon\, where she established Pine Island Press\, a small press specializing in art and photography zines\, including the publication Incandescent\, which has just released its 20th issue. Helen’s work explores interactions between people\, places\, and landscapes. Her aesthetic is one of things built up unintentionally and of imprints left behind. Her work has been featured online on sites such as Ain’t—Bad\, Nowhere Diary\, Lenscratch\, F-stop Magazine\, and Float Magazine; and in print in Subjectively\, Objective’s Monthly Monograph Magazine. She has exhibited in group shows at the Visual Art Center (Austin\, Texas)\, Vermont Center for Photography (Brattleboro\, Vermont)\, UnSmoke Systems (Braddock\, Pennsylvania)\, and was included in the Pacific Northwest Photography Viewing Drawers at Blue Sky Gallery (Portland\, Oregon). \nhttps://www.greensboroprojectspace.com/blog-post/to-light-and-then-return
