SUMMARY:Xin Gao\, saxophone • Guest Artist and Alumni Recital
DESCRIPTION:RESERVE TICKETSDOWNLOAD PROGRAM\n\nThe importance of philanthropy has never been greater. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n\n\n\n\n \nDr. Xin Gao serves as Assistant Professor of Saxophone and Music Theory at Truman State University. Prior to this\, he served on faculties of East Tennessee State University\, the Music Academy of North Carolina\, Furman University\, Georgia State University and University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) Summer Music Camp. He also taught at UNCG and University of Tennessee at Knoxville during his graduate work at those schools. At UNCG\, he also filled the duties of Associate Professor Steve Stusek while Stusek was on sabbatical. \nGao has enjoyed a successful career as a chamber musician and soloist\, and his accomplishments include national and international recognition at major world competitions\, including first place at the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) National Young Artist Woodwind Competition in 2011\, finalist at the International Saxophone Symposium and Competition (ISSAC) in 2014\, and twice semi-finalist at the International Jean-Marie Londeix Saxophone Competition in 2008 and 2014. With the chamber group QuadrAtomic Saxophone quartet\, he reached the finals of both the Fischoff and Coleman competitions\, and the group was awarded the Coleman-Saunderson Prize. In 2016\, he served as judge at MTNA Tennessee State Young Artist Woodwind and Chamber Music Competition. \nHe has performed as a soloist with orchestras and in recitals across the U.S. as well as Asia. In 2013\, he toured China as a performer and also gave performances and master classes at universities throughout the southeastern U.S. He has performed concertos with the UNCG orchestra\, the UTK orchestra\, and the Duquesne orchestra in the U.S. and the Sichuan Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra in China. He was invited to the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) for a residency and performance of Claude T. Smith’s saxophone concerto with the UIC Wind Ensemble in 2014. He also frequently performs lecture recitals at national and international conferences\, such as the North American Saxophone Alliance (NASA) and the Navy Band International Saxophone Symposium. \nAs a chamber musician\, his experiences with the Sirocco Reed Quintet\, New Century Saxophone Quartet\, QuadATOMIC Saxophone Quartet\, and Road of Creativity (ROC) ensemble have all played major roles in forming his musical identity. Quintet Sirocco performs in a variety of locations around North and South Carolina and was a featured ensemble for the SAVVY Musician in Action Chamber Competition\, Classical Revolution Greensboro\, and the MANC Summer Artist Series. In 2014\, Gao toured with the New Century Saxophone Quartet across nine states in the U.S. Midwest\, giving performances and outreach clinics. The ROC ensemble\, a collaboration among professional musicians and faculty from four universities\, seeks to reinvent concert saxophone and classical chamber music to include elements of jazz\, hip-hop\, and indigenous music. The ROC ensemble appeared at the University of Georgia on April 17\, 2014 for a featured performance and presentation session as part of the university’s interdisciplinary entrepreneurship week. The group has also been invited to present keynote addresses at major corporations such as Corning\, Inc. \nFurthermore\, Gao is passionate about new music and has commissioned new pieces from world-renowned composers such as Sherwood Shaffer and Leilei Tian\, and he has collaborated directly with young composers such as Wei Dai in his efforts to bring Chinese music to a wider audience. His research involves creating the first annotated bibliography dedicated to Chinese saxophone music. \nGao received his DMA from the University of North Carolina\, where he studied with Steve Stusek. He also completed a year of graduate study under the guidance of Connie Frigo at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. His BM and MM in saxophone performance are from Duquesne University\, where he studied with James Houlik. Gao hails from Chengdu City\, People’s Republic of China\, where he began his musical studies on clarinet at the age of eight\, studying with Professor Zhenglong Xiang at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music. In 1997\, at the age of 13\, Gao enrolled in the pre-college program at the Sichuan Conservatory and decided to change his major to classical saxophone performance\, a major created by Yusheng Li\, who was also new to the Conservatory that year. \n\n\nAudience Note\nTickets are required to attend any concert or recital in person. Patrons must sit in their assigned seat. Face coverings that cover the nose and mouth are strongly encouraged\, but not required\, while inside the performance hall.

SUMMARY:Nicole Brancato\, piano • Guest Artist Recital
DESCRIPTION:DOWNLOAD PROGRAM\n\nThe importance of philanthropy has never been greater. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n\n\nAdditional Event\n“Making It” in the Creative World: Creative Entrepreneurship for the 21st Century Musician\nMonday\, March 20\, 2023\n3:00 p.m.\, Organ Hall\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNicole Brancato makes music to unlock wonder. Fascinated with contemporary expressions of our shared human experience\, the NYC-based pianist merges curation\, composition and performance in collaborations across the arts. Described as “brilliant” and an “immense talent” (New York Magazine and Connect Savannah)\, Nicole is “redefining the very notion of classical music” (Atención San Miguel). Her credits range from the Guggenheim Museum and Rai Italia (television network Italy) to the Banff Centre and the “underground” performances in Brooklyn factories and warehouses. An awardee of National Sawdust’s 2022 Hildegard Commission\, Nicole has curated more than 70 productions featuring 100+ compositions and commissions over the last decade. Described as a “piano virtuoso” (The Daily Gazette\, Saratoga Springs)\, Nicole focuses on the kinetic energy exchange in performances — with both her collaborators and her audience. Such collaborations range from .soundfullness — a salvaged piano installation that transforms outdoor spaces into places of deep listening — to partnering with artist/author Sam Morris in “wait-list-only” performances at actor Alan Cumming’s NYC Club. A frequent guest presenter of workshops\, master classes\, and residencies\, Nicole has delivered sessions for the Gesellschaftshaus Magdeburg\, Germany; the University of Southern Mississippi; and for the Sphinx Organization. In 2022\, she joined Seven Hills Chamber Music Festival in Lynchburg\, Virginia as Director and a distinguished Artist in Residence.

SUMMARY:ROE
DESCRIPTION:By Lisa Loomer\nDirected by Kristy Dodson \nDates: March 24 – 25 at 7:30 p.m.\nMarch 26 & April 2 at 2:00 p.m.\nMarch 30 – April 1 at 7:30 p.m. \nTickets: Call the UNCG Theatre Box Office at 336-334-4392 or click the button below to purchase tickets online. \nPurchase Tickets \nAge Rating: PG-13 \nContent Advisory: This material is potentially sensitive. “Roe” deals with strong emotions\, viewpoints\, and themes surrounding the landmark Roe v Wade case and abortion. It contains strong profanity and graphic language\, descriptions of sexual assault/rape\, mentions of drug use\, mentions of suicide\, and systemic oppression. This play is intended for mature audiences and may be triggering for survivors. \nRun Time: Approx. 2 hr. and 30 min.\nFrame/Works Discussion via Zoom: April 3 at 7:00 p.m. (click here for the link)\nLocation: Pam and David Sprinkle Theatre (Brown Building)\, 402 Tate St\, Greensboro\, NC 27412 \nPrograms\, bios\, and more! \nSummary: \nRoe v. Wade\, the landmark 1973 case that legalized abortion\, is still fiercely debated over forty years later. In this incisive play\, acclaimed writer Lisa Loomer cuts through the headlines and rhetoric to reveal the divergent personal journeys of lawyer Sarah Weddington and plaintiff Norma McCorvey (“Jane Roe”) in the years following the fateful decision. In turns shocking\, humorous\, and poignant\, ROE reflects the polarization in America today while illuminating the heart and passion each side has for its cause. –Dramatist Play Service \n“This is a big play with big ideas…a rousing entertainment…ROE is not a screed for or against abortion…Rather\, Loomer’s main theme is the process by which everyday people get swept up in the big currents of history\, often with a random dose of chance…Loomer finds the humanity in all her characters. In the end\, she seems to suggest that\, polarized as we are\, if we’d open our hearts and minds a bit\, maybe we could find a little compassion for each other.” —Mail Tribune (Medford\, OR). ” \n“[ROE is] a useful primer—embroidered by the emotional\, religious\, and political motivations of its adherents and opponents—on one of the most durably contentious subjects of our time. With abundant care\, the playwright refracts the complexity of abortion rights through the personal prisms of two emblematic real-life characters…[an] admirably probing play…” —Washington Post.
