Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nSteve Stusek\, saxophone\, is Associate Professor of Music at the University of North Carolina Greensboro\, where he is a member of the Eastwind Quintette d’Anches and the Red Clay Saxophone Quartet. Originally from Oshkosh\, Wisconsin\, he received his Bachelor’s degree in saxophone performance from Indiana University. Before beginning a Master’s degree in saxophone and chamber music at Arizona State University\, Steve spent a year in Paris studying at the Paris Conservatory (Conservatoire Nationale Superior de Musique de Paris) and the Conservatoire de le Région de Paris\, where he was awarded the Prix d’Or à l’Unanimité in Saxophone Performance. After living in the Netherlands for almost eight years he returned to Indiana University and was awarded a DMA in Saxophone in 2001. He has served on the faculties of Ball State University\, Middlebury College\, the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. He has been on the UNCG faculty since 1999. As a soloist\, Steve has appeared with the Eastern Music Festival and more recently with the University of South Carolina Wind Ensemble as part of the North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial conference. He has been the principal saxophonist for the Eastern Music Festival and the Greensboro Symphony for the past ten years. In 2000\, he won the prestigious Dutch Chamber Music Competition as part of the saxophone-accordion duo 2Track with accordion virtuoso Otine van Erp. Together they have performed throughout the Netherlands\, the US and on Dutch radio. Steve teamed up with pianist Inara Zandmane and saxophonist Susan Fancher to produce the critically acclaimed recording Louder than Words – music for two saxophones and piano. Steve’s teachers have included Eugene Rousseau\, Joseph Wytko\, David Baker\, Larry Teal\, Daniel Deffayet\, Jean-Yves Formeau\, and Leroy Wolter. Steve is the Past-President of the North American Saxophone Alliance. \n\nHailed for his “exquisite artistry\,” “stunning interpretations” and “flawless performances\,” New-Zealand-born bassoonist Michael Burns enjoys a multi-faceted career as a performer\, teacher and composer. \nAn active performer\, Burns enjoys roles as a soloist\, in chamber groups\, and orchestrally with numerous recent performances at International Double Reed Society conventions\, recitals and masterclasses throughout North America\, Germany\, Italy\, China and the South Pacific. He performs as principal bassoon with the Asheville Symphony and the North Carolina Opera and as bassoonist in the EastWind Ensemble and Blue Mountain Forecast. He also performs regularly with regional groups such as the Greensboro\, Charlotte\, and North Carolina Symphonies and as a guest with the Ciompi Quartet and Mallarme Chamber Players. \nHe has recorded for the Centaur\, CAP\, Telarc\, EMI\, Klavier\, and Mark labels and his solo CD Primavera: Music for Bassoon and Piano by Bassoonists\, was released to critical acclaim on the Mark Masters label. A new CD Glass Ghosts is scheduled for release in 2020. He performed extensively with the Cincinnati and New Zealand Symphony Orchestras\, the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra\, and he held Principal positions with the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra and the Midland/Odessa\, Richmond\, and Abilene Symphonies. Burns plays on a Moosmann 222CL 5SC Thin Wall bassoon. \nBurns’ primary position is as Professor of bassoon at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In summers\, he has been associated with several Festivals including the Clazz International Music Festival in Tuscany\, Italy\, Eastern Music Festival\, The Summer Bassoon Extravaganza\, Music for All/Bands of America Summer Symposium\, the Affetti Festival\, New England Music Camp and the Bocal Majority and Operation O.B.O.E. Prior to accepting the position at UNCG\, he also taught at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory\, Indiana State University and Midland College. \nHe is an active composer with many of his pieces being published by TrevCo Music\, Potenza Music and Effiny Music and frequently performed internationally. Additionally\, he has published articles and reviews in the Double Reed (the journal of the International Double Reed Society)\, the TBA Journal (Texas Bandmasters’ Association)\, the NC Music Educator (journal of the NC Music Educators’ Association for which he served as Woodwind Notes Editor for over a decade)\, and Notes (the journal of the Music Library Association). His mentors include William Winstead\, Sherman Walt\, Leonard Sharrow\, Sidney Rosenberg\, and Colin Hemmingsen. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nThe UNCG Symphony Orchestra is a highly select ensemble of approximately ninety performers majoring in music. Performers include undergraduates through masters and doctoral candidates in music performance and music education. Membership in the organization is highly competitive\, and all students are placed by audition. Members of the Symphony have achieved numerous individual honors including solo competition awards on regional and national levels\, music scholarships\, undergraduate teaching fellowships\, graduate assistantships and fellowships\, and membership in honors ensembles. \nThe UNCG Symphony Orchestra periodically tours the state and region\, and has recently performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington\, DC. A recent review in the Classical Voice of North Carolina described the Orchestra’s performance as\, “dramatic and incisive\,” and “beautifully done.” \nIn addition to the performances of standard orchestral literature\, the Symphony Orchestra often collaborates with the UNCG Choirs to present a major choral/orchestral work. Faculty\, as well as winners of the annual Student Artist Competition\, are often featured as soloists. The Symphony combines with the School of Music Opera Theatre and the UNCG School of Theatre to perform a fully staged opera production each spring semester. DESCRIPTION:Greensboro Dance Film Festival is a boutique dance film festival seeking to connect diverse populations and environments through the innovative genre of dance on screen. It is one thing to lecture effectively on fine points of operatic interpretation\, but this performer’s characterizations are invaluable lessons in the art of combining unflappable musicality with an adroitness upon the stage that can be observed and thus honed but only very rarely taught to those who do not possess it.” –Voix des Arts \nSince the beginning of his professional operatic singing career in 1978 at the Stadttheater Regensburg\, and later with the Vereinigte Städtiches Bühnen Krefeld/Mönchengladbach in Germany\, bass-baritone\, Donald Hartmann\, continues to be an active performer with regional and national opera companies. He has been described as possessing a\, “big\, rich voice with an amazing timbre;” interpretative abilities as “hearty and dramatic;” vocal resonance as “ringing\,” “sepulchral\,” “richly focused;” and “… his flair for comedic bel canto is major-league-worthy.” Having performed in over 135 operatic productions\, in over 55 operas singing over 70 different roles\, he is a commanding leading man and “one of the best character singers on any opera stage anywhere.” With a vast repertoire from works of Mozart\, Puccini\, Verdi\, Donizetti\, Rossini\, Strauss\, Bizet\, Britten\, and many others\, engagements have included appearances with Opéra de Montreal\, Madison Opera\, Toledo Opera\, Opera Carolina\, Michigan Opera Theater\, Nashville Opera\, Piedmont Opera\, Opera Delaware\, North Carolina Opera\, Arizona Opera\, Florentine Opera\, and Virginia Opera Association\, to name a few. In March 2013\, Donald Hartmann made his first venture into the music of Richard Wagner singing Wotan’s Lebewohl and Hans Sachs monologue\, Wahn! Wahn! Überall\, Wahn! As reported in the Classical Voice of North Carolina: “Appearing as soloist…Donald Hartmann of the UNCG faculty\, a serious presence\, and a skilled vocalist producing beautifully-shaped\, deep\, round tones\, displaying a fine instrument\, with a natural delivery and clear diction.” In April 2009\, he created the role of Howard in the world premiere of Libby Larsen’s opera\, Picnic. 2014-2015 included a return to Toledo Opera for Tosca; Sulpice in Daughter of the Regiment for Greensboro Opera; and a debut with Roanoke Opera as Don Magnifico in La Cenerentola. His 2015-2016 season includes Don Magnifico for Greensboro Opera\, Monterone in Rigoletto for Piedmont Opera and two very important national debuts: William Jennings Bryan in the 60th anniversary production of Ballad Baby Doe for Central City Opera in Colorado\, and the Sacristan in Tosca in the historic reopening of New York City Opera’s return to Lincoln Center! A concert recitalist and oratorio soloist\, Donald Hartmann has sung with the renowned Detroit Symphony Orchestra\, Beethoven Symphony #9 with New Mexico Symphony\, the Verdi Requiem with the Eastern Philharmonic\, Peabody Symphony\, Plymouth Symphony\, and a benefit performance conducted by Neeme Järvi. Other engagements include the Mozart Requiem with the Greensboro Symphony\, the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra; Brahms’ A German Requiem; Duruflé Requiem; Handel’s Messiah; Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass and The Seasons. Donald received his BM in Piano Performance\, and MM in Vocal Performance from UNCG and the DMA from the University of Oklahoma\, graduating with Honors. The musicians in the group each have rich and extensive experience in Argentine tango\, jazz\, classical and contemporary music\, and other world and popular music styles\, all of which can be heard on their debut recording\, The Other Side of My Heart. “The Not Your Average Folk Contest ” Grand Prize Winner-2021″ and “World Music” category winners of NC Museum of Art 2021\, the LGTE is currently recording its second album Tango Diaspora\, which plans to release at the beginning of 2022. \nBased in North Carolina\, the group has been committed to collaborations and concerts with some of the Triangle and Triad “milongas” and tango-dance organizations: “Durham-Tango” and “Alma-Tango” (WS)\, with which it has shared the stage in many occasions in concerts\, festivals and workshops. In 2019\, the ensemble developed “In The Embrace of Tango: Jewish Tango Project\,” a program that explores Argentine tango and its crossed-path with Jewish culture: tango in the pre-WWII Europe\, later in the ghettos\, in the early 20th century NYC and Buenos Aires Yiddish theater and through compositions of the first generation of Argentine-Jewish composers. Concerts were presented at the Levin Jewish Community Center (Durham)\, for the Shalom Club (Raleigh) and in a mini-workshop and concert along with the singer-students of the UNCG University Chorale (Carol Ott\, conductor) and tango dancers Eduardo and Alicia Lazarowski (Durham-Tango). \n\nWinterbirds offers a powerful take on Progressive Folk. Deeply versed in traditional Appalachian Folk\, Bluegrass and Newgrass\, Classical Music\, and Contemporary Chamber Music\, these young performers cloak timeless melodies in unusual instrumental colors and thrilling textures. DESCRIPTION:Dawn Surratt earned a B.A. in Studio Arts from the University of North Carolina in Greensboro and a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Georgia. Her years of work with dying patients in hospice settings is the backbone of her imagery combining photographs with photography based book structures\, installations\, and objects as visual\nmeditations exploring concepts of grief\, transition\, healing and spirituality. \nHer work has been shown and is held in private an permanent collections across the United States. She is a 2016 and 2020 Critical Mass Finalist and a 2018 nominee for the Royal Photography Society’s 100 Heroines. \nThis exhibition runs Monday – Friday\, March 2 – 29\, 2023

Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe UNCG Wind Ensemble is a highly select concert band of fifty performers majoring in music at the UNCG School of Music. Performers in the current Wind Ensemble are drawn from sixteen states\, Slovenia\, and Hong Kong. The ensemble has enjoyed a distinguished record of performance throughout its history. In January 1992\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed “A Tribute to John Philip Sousa” to a capacity crowd of 2\,700 at the Concert Hall of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington\, D.C. Twice\, the Wind Ensemble earned critical acclaim from The Washington Post following concerts in the nation’s capital. The Wind Ensemble has performed throughout the eastern United States in recent years including the first-ever performance\, in 1987\, by a North Carolina collegiate ensemble in Lincoln Center\, New York City. The Wind Ensemble performed that same year in West Virginia\, Virginia\, Pennsylvania\, and Washington\, D.C. The Wind Ensemble has recorded nineteen commercially-available albums which have received widespread praise. \nIn 1985\, the Wind Ensemble performed a series of concerts with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer-conductor Karel Husa. In 1988\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed in New Orleans\, Louisiana by invitation of the College Band Directors National Association for the Southern Division convention. On a number of occasions\, the Wind Ensemble has commissioned and premiered works from leading band composers. In November of 1990\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the Southern Division of MENC convention. In February 1994\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed for a convention of the CBDNA and NBA in Williamsburg\, Virginia. In March 1999\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the national convention of the American Bandmasters Association in Melbourne\, Florida. In February 2000\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the CBDNA Southern Division Convention hosted at UNCG. In 2006\, the Wind Ensemble performed in The Music Center at Strathmore in Bethesda\, Maryland\, shared a concert with the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” in Arlington\, Virginia\, and collaborated with Karel Husa\, David Dzubay\, and Carter Pann in the performaces of their music\, including two commissions. In 2009\, the Wind Ensemble performed at the CBDNA National Convention at the University of Texas at Austin and performed additional concerts in Georgia\, Alabama\, Louisiana\, and Texas as part of a week-long tour. The Wind Ensemble performed at the 2011 National Convention of the American Bandmasters Association and the 2013 National Conference of the College Band Directors National Association hosted in Greensboro. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Emily Jane Loboda is an accomplished solo saxophonist\, chamber musician\, and educator. Emily has performed as a soloist with orchestras in Tennessee\, Michigan\, and North Carolina; and has been heard as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the world including performances in China\, Illinois\, Missouri\, Ohio\, Colorado\, Tennessee\, Texas\, and Virginia. She also is active on the professional jazz scene in North Carolina and Tennessee. She studied jazz with Chad Eby and is a member of the Winston-Salem’s Camel City Jazz Orchestra. She was awarded an assistantship for summer 2016 to study with acclaimed saxophonist Branford Marsalis. Emily currently resides in Nashville. She is an adjunct professor at Middle Tennessee State University and Nashville State Community College and private saxophone instructor to a large studio in Middle Tennessee. She was formerly the Adjunct Professor of Saxophone at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City\, Tennessee. She received her Doctorate in Musical Arts in performance\, with minor areas in jazz and music education studies from UNCG. She holds degrees from Central Michigan University and Tennessee Technological University. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n\n\n\n\n \nDr. Xin Gao serves as Assistant Professor of Saxophone and Music Theory at Truman State University. Prior to this\, he served on faculties of East Tennessee State University\, the Music Academy of North Carolina\, Furman University\, Georgia State University and University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) Summer Music Camp. He also taught at UNCG and University of Tennessee at Knoxville during his graduate work at those schools. At UNCG\, he also filled the duties of Associate Professor Steve Stusek while Stusek was on sabbatical. \nGao has enjoyed a successful career as a chamber musician and soloist\, and his accomplishments include national and international recognition at major world competitions\, including first place at the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) National Young Artist Woodwind Competition in 2011\, finalist at the International Saxophone Symposium and Competition (ISSAC) in 2014\, and twice semi-finalist at the International Jean-Marie Londeix Saxophone Competition in 2008 and 2014. With the chamber group QuadrAtomic Saxophone quartet\, he reached the finals of both the Fischoff and Coleman competitions\, and the group was awarded the Coleman-Saunderson Prize. In 2016\, he served as judge at MTNA Tennessee State Young Artist Woodwind and Chamber Music Competition. \nHe has performed as a soloist with orchestras and in recitals across the U.S. as well as Asia. In 2013\, he toured China as a performer and also gave performances and master classes at universities throughout the southeastern U.S. He has performed concertos with the UNCG orchestra\, the UTK orchestra\, and the Duquesne orchestra in the U.S. and the Sichuan Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra in China. He was invited to the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) for a residency and performance of Claude T. Smith’s saxophone concerto with the UIC Wind Ensemble in 2014. He also frequently performs lecture recitals at national and international conferences\, such as the North American Saxophone Alliance (NASA) and the Navy Band International Saxophone Symposium. \nAs a chamber musician\, his experiences with the Sirocco Reed Quintet\, New Century Saxophone Quartet\, QuadATOMIC Saxophone Quartet\, and Road of Creativity (ROC) ensemble have all played major roles in forming his musical identity. Quintet Sirocco performs in a variety of locations around North and South Carolina and was a featured ensemble for the SAVVY Musician in Action Chamber Competition\, Classical Revolution Greensboro\, and the MANC Summer Artist Series. In 2014\, Gao toured with the New Century Saxophone Quartet across nine states in the U.S. Midwest\, giving performances and outreach clinics. The ROC ensemble\, a collaboration among professional musicians and faculty from four universities\, seeks to reinvent concert saxophone and classical chamber music to include elements of jazz\, hip-hop\, and indigenous music. The ROC ensemble appeared at the University of Georgia on April 17\, 2014 for a featured performance and presentation session as part of the university’s interdisciplinary entrepreneurship week. The group has also been invited to present keynote addresses at major corporations such as Corning\, Inc. \nFurthermore\, Gao is passionate about new music and has commissioned new pieces from world-renowned composers such as Sherwood Shaffer and Leilei Tian\, and he has collaborated directly with young composers such as Wei Dai in his efforts to bring Chinese music to a wider audience. His research involves creating the first annotated bibliography dedicated to Chinese saxophone music. \nGao received his DMA from the University of North Carolina\, where he studied with Steve Stusek. He also completed a year of graduate study under the guidance of Connie Frigo at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. His BM and MM in saxophone performance are from Duquesne University\, where he studied with James Houlik. Gao hails from Chengdu City\, People’s Republic of China\, where he began his musical studies on clarinet at the age of eight\, studying with Professor Zhenglong Xiang at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music. In 1997\, at the age of 13\, Gao enrolled in the pre-college program at the Sichuan Conservatory and decided to change his major to classical saxophone performance\, a major created by Yusheng Li\, who was also new to the Conservatory that year. \n\n\nAudience Note\nTickets are required to attend any concert or recital in person.
