Performing a range of works for 6 to 18 players\, from the Renaissance period through world premieres\, the ensemble functions on a professional model and performs one concert each semester. The personnel for each semester is determined by the repertoire\, allowing the finest performers on wind\, brass\, string\, percussion\, and keyboard instruments the highest-level experience possible. Faculty and guest soloists and composers frequently collaborate with the ensemble.

DESCRIPTION:Exhibition on View\nWhen: September 20- October 1st\, 2022\nReception: September 23rd 6:00pm-8:00pm\nWhere: Greensboro Project Space (111 E February One Place) \nGallery Hours: Tuesdays-Fridays\, 12-5pm; Saturdays\, 2-5pm\nGroup Show\, Featuring: Adam Carlin with Derek ToomesMore About Coming Soon? \nComing Soon? is a socially engaged art project that uses techniques in speculative and science fiction for diverse communities in Greensboro\, North Carolina to imagine how empty storefronts and uninhabited commercial properties could serve their communities. During collaborative visioning sessions with the artist Adam Carlin\, graphic designer Irvin Maldonado\, and students in Derek Toomes’ Interior Architecture Department at UNC Greensboro\, each community will design a pseudo institution that could or should exist in Downtown Greensboro.Coming soon signs for these fictionalized spaces will then be installed on vacant properties as temporary public art pieces\, publicly projecting a potential future that is inclusive and accessible for those who are often under-represented. These ambiguous yet thought-provoking installations will allow the public to pause and contemplate who our current city is truly for\, and will empower the constituents of a city to own a future that is often prescribed rather than collectively created. \nAdam CarlinAdam Carlin is a curator\, educator\, administrator and social practice artist. He is currently the Director of Learning & Engagement at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse\, NY. He is also co-Director of the artist project\, the Greensboro Contemporary Jewish Museum\, a decentralized museum that explores the intersections between contemporary art practices and southern Jewish life. Carlin was previously the Director of Community Engagement for UNC Greensboro’s College of Visual and Performing Arts and Director of UNCG’s off-campus contemporary art center Greensboro Project Space. Other notable projects Carlin co-Founded and co-Directed include Creek Colleges\, an organization that created schools on the banks of rivers\, lakes\, and creeks that are going through active restoration and Some Thing Spacious\, an experimental project space in Oakland\, CA that focused on participatory art practices. He received a BFA from California College of the Arts and an MFA in Art and Social Practice from Portland State University.Carlin’s practice draws from a variety of histories and lineages. From community organizing principles defined in the civil rights era; to the expanded field of sculpture; to the contemporary canon of socially engaged arts. But first and foremost his practice draws from that which is right in front of him. He makes both permanent and ephemeral projects that are created in context to the external environment\, be that a community\, a history\, a situation\, a place\, or a person. The projects act as platforms for these constituents to tell their stories\, to express their own creativity\, and to contribute to a collective idea or action. Some of his personal works often take the form of institutes as artworks which grants artists the power to not only create institutions of their own but to radically reimagine institutional practices in order to counter systemic inequalities that are embedded into the tradition of the arts. Working simultaneously as a curator\, educator\, administrator\, and socially engaged artist\, Carlin’s artistic projects have taken the forms of schools\, colleges\, museums\, departments\, and various other institutions whose qualities he has co-opted as a container for participatory projects for the public. \nDerek ToomesDerek Toomes is an artist based in Greensboro and Raleigh\, NC. Derek is drawn to the iconic imagery of popular culture\, as he is equally interested in societal location as a culture inundated by imagery. His sourcing as well as appropriation of images allows Derek to create work that is aesthetically and anthropologically situated within culture\, while also commenting on that culture.He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Interior Architecture at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. \nIrvin MaldonadoIrvin Maldonado is a Latine artist currently based in Greensboro\, North Carolina\, passionate about the creative process and visualizing communication. Taking its name from a short poem\, almost a fragment\, written on the back of an envelope by Emily Dickinson\, this work marvels at the magic and mistakes of photography\, meditates on loss\, and places value on the everyday sediments of our lives. \nSublime large-format landscapes and still lifes of teeth and ashes share space with washed-out snapshots and aged ephemera\, words of wisdom\, shopping lists\, and favorite poems copied by hand—items inherited when the artist’s parents passed. These combinations make space for new meanings; a piece of carbon paper becomes the night sky\, two awkwardly positioned rocks are bodies supporting one another\, and light flares and glares become spirits populating the images. \nAbout Helen JonesHelen Jones holds an MFA from the University of Texas\, Austin\, and a BFA in Photography from the Massachusetts College of Art. She spent the intervening years in Oregon\, where she established Pine Island Press\, a small press specializing in art and photography zines\, including the publication Incandescent\, which has just released its 20th issue. Helen’s work explores interactions between people\, places\, and landscapes. Her aesthetic is one of things built up unintentionally and of imprints left behind. Her work has been featured online on sites such as Ain’t—Bad\, Nowhere Diary\, Lenscratch\, F-stop Magazine\, and Float Magazine; and in print in Subjectively\, Objective’s Monthly Monograph Magazine. SUMMARY:Winston Duke
DESCRIPTION:Winston Duke made his feature film debut in Black Panther\, the highest-grossing film of 2018\, as well as the third-highest-grossing film ever in the United States. Duke played the fan-favorite character M’Baku. The role earned him his first NAACP nomination for Breakout of the Year. Duke reprised his role as M’Baku in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: End Game. \nDuke most recently starred alongside Mark Wahlberg in Peter Berg’s Netflix crime drama Spencer Confidential. \nHis other film credits include Jordan Peele’s US for which he received an NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Motion Picture. \nDuke’s upcoming projects include Sony Picture Classics’ Nine Days\, which premiered to rave reviews at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. Patrons must sit in their assigned seat.\n\n\n\nFace Coverings\nFace coverings that cover the nose and mouth are strongly encouraged\, but not required\, while inside the performance hall. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nPerformances by Andy Hudson have been hailed as “a treat for the listener” and have been praised for “an uncommon singularity of purpose\, technical virtuosity\, youthful vigor and a mature sensitivity.” He has appeared in Carnegie Hall’s ‘Weill Recital Hall\,’ at Chicago’s ‘Symphony Center\,’ and at the World Congress of the International Alliance for Women in Music\, College Music Society conferences in both Canada and the US\, and gatherings of the International Clarinet Association in Los Angeles\, Orlando\, Knoxville\, and Ostend\, Belgium. Andy won top honors at the 2008 MTNA National Senior Woodwind Competition and has received other prizes in the National Collegiate Solo Competition\, the Vandoren Emerging Artists Competition\, the Luminarts Foundation Fellowship Competition\, and the Ariel Artists ‘Impact Performance’ Competition. Andy has recently performed as guest principal clarinet of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra and the North Carolina Opera\, and he was appointed Bass Clarinet/III Clarinetist of the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra in 2020. Other festival appearances include the Lucerne\, Bang on a Can\, Sewanee\, Hot Springs\, and Great Lakes Chamber Music festivals. \nA noted interpreter of contemporary music\, Andy has premiered and commissioned dozens of works to date and has performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on their MusicNOW series\, at the New Music Gathering\, and with Ensemble Dal Niente\, the Chicago Composer’s Orchestra\, and the Chicago Center for Contemporary Composition’s Grossman Ensemble (with whom he is featured on the 2020 release FOUNTAIN OF TIME). In 2018\, he was clarinetist for the workshop performance of Augusta Read Thomas’s opera “Sweet Potato Kicks the Sun\,” sponsored by the Santa Fe Opera. Andy also performs with the Zafa Collective and earspace\, and was a founding member of the trio F-PLUS. Andy is clarinetist with the mixed sextet Latitude 49\, which recently released its sophomore album WAX AND WIRE on New Amsterdam Records. Latitude 49 has held residencies at Princeton University and Baylor University\, and has been the recipient of grants from the Barlow Endowment\, the Fromm Foundation\, Chamber Music America\, and the Aaron Copland Fund. \nAndy is currently Assistant Professor of Clarinet at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and each summer joins the Artist-Faculty of the Tennessee Valley Music Festival. Previously\, he held teaching positions at Northwestern University and Lake Forest College\, and he has been the North Carolina State Chair for the International Clarinet Association since 2019. Andy earned his DMA in Clarinet Performance with a Cognate Certification in Music Theory from Northwestern University\, where he also earned his Master of Music degree. He earned his Bachelor of Music degree from Columbus State University’s Schwob School of Music. His primary teachers have included Steve Cohen\, J. Lawrie Bloom\, and Lisa Oberlander. Andy is an Artist-Clinician for Buffet Crampon and an Ambassador for Rovner Products. He performs exclusively on Buffet clarinets and Rovner ligatures. \nWhen he’s not practicing\, Andy enjoys running\, reading\, playing guitar\, eating local food\, watching baseball\, and collecting obscure instruments. \n\nHailed for her “brilliant pianism” (Gramophone) and “acrobatic” performances (Take Effect)\, Taiwanese-American pianist Annie Jeng has performed widely as a solo and chamber musician at the Brancaleoni International Music Festival in Italy\, the Gijón International Piano Festival in Spain\, the Kennedy Center\, New York City\, China\, and at numerous academic institutions as a guest artist. As an advocate for pushing the boundaries of traditional performances\, Annie has performed and curated concerts at breweries\, parking deck rooftops\, intimate living room settings\, and other unconventional spaces\, all with the aim of making the arts more accessible and interdisciplinary. Annie has presented at Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) conferences at collegiate\, state\, and national levels\, The National Conference of Keyboard Pedagogy (NCKP)\, and College Music Society (CMS) conferences. She is the current President of Greensboro Music Teachers Association (GMTA) and serves on the board for the North Carolina Music Teachers Association (NCMTA). During summers\, she is the Assistant Director of Piano for the Brancaleoni International Music Festival (brancaleonifestival.com(opens in new window)) in Piobbico\, Italy. \nAnnie has commissioned and premiered dozens of new works. She is the pianist of Khemia Ensemble (khemiaensemble.com(opens in new window))\, a contemporary chamber ensemble that is dedicated to promoting contemporary classical music by cultivating inclusive place-making\, collaborative mentorships\, and authentic storytelling through immersive\, multimedia performances. She also released the album “World Map” with Parma Recordings as the former pianist of Four Corner’s Ensemble. Her latest commissioning project\, Circles and Lines\, consists of new pedagogical works by women composers that introduces contemporary piano techniques to intermediate pianists. As a strong believer in creating a better and more equitable “normal” in the piano community\, she also founded A Seat at the Piano (ASAP) in the summer of 2020 (aseatatthepiano.com(opens in new window)). ASAP is a 501(c)(3) that is dedicated to the promotion of inclusion in the performance and study of solo piano repertoire.
