SUMMARY:Winston Duke
DESCRIPTION:Winston Duke made his feature film debut in Black Panther\, the highest-grossing film of 2018\, as well as the third-highest-grossing film ever in the United States. Duke played the fan-favorite character M’Baku. The role earned him his first NAACP nomination for Breakout of the Year. Duke reprised his role as M’Baku in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: End Game. \nDuke most recently starred alongside Mark Wahlberg in Peter Berg’s Netflix crime drama Spencer Confidential. \nHis other film credits include Jordan Peele’s US for which he received an NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Motion Picture. \nDuke’s upcoming projects include Sony Picture Classics’ Nine Days\, which premiered to rave reviews at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. Tickets purchased through third-party vendors cannot be honored. \n\n\n\n \nDuke was also awarded with the Advanced Imaging Society’s Social Justice Lumiere Award for his work as the star and executive producer of “The Messy Truth VR Experience\,” a virtual reality (VR) short-doc which provides viewers with a look at the timely themes of race\, mercy\, and redemption through someone else’s eyes. \nOutside of acting\, Duke is an advocate for the HeForShe movement and most recently issued a global call to action for gender equality during the United Nations HeForShe Impact Summit. \nHe also has joined the American Diabetes Association® to spark a national conversation about diabetes—a disease that impacts nearly half of the U.S. adult population. \nDuke was most recently named the first celebrity ambassador for Partners in Health\, a nonprofit global health and social justice organization fighting injustice by bringing the benefits of modern medical science to impoverished communities around the world. \nA native of Trinidad and Tobago\, Duke received his Bachelor of Arts in Theatre at the University at Buffalo and Master of Fine Arts at Yale School of Drama. \n\nIn addition to public presentations\, every artist in the UCLS series does important work with UNCG students\, such as holding masterclasses and seminars\, often just hours before performing on stage. Patrons must sit in their assigned seat.\n\n\n\nFace Coverings\nFace coverings that cover the nose and mouth are strongly encouraged\, but not required\, while inside the performance hall. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nPerformances by Andy Hudson have been hailed as “a treat for the listener” and have been praised for “an uncommon singularity of purpose\, technical virtuosity\, youthful vigor and a mature sensitivity.” He has appeared in Carnegie Hall’s ‘Weill Recital Hall\,’ at Chicago’s ‘Symphony Center\,’ and at the World Congress of the International Alliance for Women in Music\, College Music Society conferences in both Canada and the US\, and gatherings of the International Clarinet Association in Los Angeles\, Orlando\, Knoxville\, and Ostend\, Belgium. Andy won top honors at the 2008 MTNA National Senior Woodwind Competition and has received other prizes in the National Collegiate Solo Competition\, the Vandoren Emerging Artists Competition\, the Luminarts Foundation Fellowship Competition\, and the Ariel Artists ‘Impact Performance’ Competition. Andy has recently performed as guest principal clarinet of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra and the North Carolina Opera\, and he was appointed Bass Clarinet/III Clarinetist of the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra in 2020. Other festival appearances include the Lucerne\, Bang on a Can\, Sewanee\, Hot Springs\, and Great Lakes Chamber Music festivals. \nA noted interpreter of contemporary music\, Andy has premiered and commissioned dozens of works to date and has performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on their MusicNOW series\, at the New Music Gathering\, and with Ensemble Dal Niente\, the Chicago Composer’s Orchestra\, and the Chicago Center for Contemporary Composition’s Grossman Ensemble (with whom he is featured on the 2020 release FOUNTAIN OF TIME). In 2018\, he was clarinetist for the workshop performance of Augusta Read Thomas’s opera “Sweet Potato Kicks the Sun\,” sponsored by the Santa Fe Opera. Andy also performs with the Zafa Collective and earspace\, and was a founding member of the trio F-PLUS. Andy is clarinetist with the mixed sextet Latitude 49\, which recently released its sophomore album WAX AND WIRE on New Amsterdam Records. Latitude 49 has held residencies at Princeton University and Baylor University\, and has been the recipient of grants from the Barlow Endowment\, the Fromm Foundation\, Chamber Music America\, and the Aaron Copland Fund. \nAndy is currently Assistant Professor of Clarinet at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and each summer joins the Artist-Faculty of the Tennessee Valley Music Festival. Previously\, he held teaching positions at Northwestern University and Lake Forest College\, and he has been the North Carolina State Chair for the International Clarinet Association since 2019. Andy earned his DMA in Clarinet Performance with a Cognate Certification in Music Theory from Northwestern University\, where he also earned his Master of Music degree. He earned his Bachelor of Music degree from Columbus State University’s Schwob School of Music. His primary teachers have included Steve Cohen\, J. Lawrie Bloom\, and Lisa Oberlander. Andy is an Artist-Clinician for Buffet Crampon and an Ambassador for Rovner Products. He performs exclusively on Buffet clarinets and Rovner ligatures. \nWhen he’s not practicing\, Andy enjoys running\, reading\, playing guitar\, eating local food\, watching baseball\, and collecting obscure instruments. \n\nHailed for her “brilliant pianism” (Gramophone) and “acrobatic” performances (Take Effect)\, Taiwanese-American pianist Annie Jeng has performed widely as a solo and chamber musician at the Brancaleoni International Music Festival in Italy\, the Gijón International Piano Festival in Spain\, the Kennedy Center\, New York City\, China\, and at numerous academic institutions as a guest artist. As an advocate for pushing the boundaries of traditional performances\, Annie has performed and curated concerts at breweries\, parking deck rooftops\, intimate living room settings\, and other unconventional spaces\, all with the aim of making the arts more accessible and interdisciplinary. Annie has presented at Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) conferences at collegiate\, state\, and national levels\, The National Conference of Keyboard Pedagogy (NCKP)\, and College Music Society (CMS) conferences. She is the current President of Greensboro Music Teachers Association (GMTA) and serves on the board for the North Carolina Music Teachers Association (NCMTA). During summers\, she is the Assistant Director of Piano for the Brancaleoni International Music Festival (brancaleonifestival.com(opens in new window)) in Piobbico\, Italy. \nAnnie has commissioned and premiered dozens of new works. She is the pianist of Khemia Ensemble (khemiaensemble.com(opens in new window))\, a contemporary chamber ensemble that is dedicated to promoting contemporary classical music by cultivating inclusive place-making\, collaborative mentorships\, and authentic storytelling through immersive\, multimedia performances. She also released the album “World Map” with Parma Recordings as the former pianist of Four Corner’s Ensemble. Her latest commissioning project\, Circles and Lines\, consists of new pedagogical works by women composers that introduces contemporary piano techniques to intermediate pianists. As a strong believer in creating a better and more equitable “normal” in the piano community\, she also founded A Seat at the Piano (ASAP) in the summer of 2020 (aseatatthepiano.com(opens in new window)). ASAP is a 501(c)(3) that is dedicated to the promotion of inclusion in the performance and study of solo piano repertoire. In collaboration with the Frances Clark Center for Keyboard Pedagogy\, she has co-created an online course on women composers\, been invited to speak on panels\, present workshops\, and serves on the Career Develop and Innovation subcommittee chair for NCKP. \nAnnie received her DMA in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Michigan\, where she also received her MM. She earned her BM in Piano Performance with a minor in Public Health from New York University. Her primary teachers have included Logan Skelton\, José Ramón Mendez\, Miyoko Lotto\, Anne-Marie McDermott\, and Faye Bonner. Patrons must sit in their assigned seat.\n\n\n\nFace Coverings\nFace coverings that cover the nose and mouth are strongly encouraged\, but not required\, while inside the performance hall. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nFlutist and pedagogue\, Erika Boysen\, is a leading innovator within interdisciplinary performance. Particularly known for her uniquely evocative collaborations including movement\, singing and acting\, Boysen uses these forms of creative expression both in performance and as a method for teaching artistic concepts. For her demonstrative expertise and virtuosic performance\, she has been invited to Asia\, Australia\, Central America\, Europe\, and to over a dozen US states to perform in recitals\, teach master classes\, and lead creative workshops. \nActive on all fronts\, recent highlights include: solo and chamber performances in Shanghai\, China\, guest artist appearances at the Flutes by the Sea Workshop in California\, and Anatomy of Sound Workshop in Michigan. Additionally\, Boysen recently released the video mobile app\, Moving Sound\, that features newly commissioned solo works for the singing\, speaking\, moving flutist by composers: David Biedenbender\, Mark Engebretson\, and Jane Rigler. The app\, available for download on apple and android devices\, includes a moving score\, interviews with composers and behind-the-scenes footage from the recording process. \nWhenever possible\, Dr. Boysen believes in combining the power of music\, movement\, and theater to create. To this end\, she has performed theatrically inclined work by composer Kate Soper\, fully choreographed interpretations of existing work from composers such as Toru Takemitsu\, and entirely new works from composers such as Jane Rigler. In combination with performances in multiple years of the National Flute Association Convention\, these highlights have earned Boysen international recognition\, including features on The Flute View and Flute Talk and requests to conduct workshops and masterclasses in universities and festivals across the world. \nAs a “seated” performer\, Erika also takes the stage frequently as a chamber musician. Though she regularly performs in a number of chamber ensembles\, most decorated has been her role in the Four Corners Ensemble (4CE)\, a sextet of flute\, clarinet\, violin\, viola\, cello and piano dedicated to international collaboration. Recent 4CE performances have included recitals in Carnegie Hall\, Shanghai Conservatory\, Qingdao University of Science and Technology\, and at the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland\, where Boysen premiered flute concerto The Dryad by composer Shuying Li. Other previous and forthcoming performances with chamber groups include the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble\, Eighth Blackbird\, Seen/Heard Trio\, and COLLAPSS. \nIn addition to her primary position as Assistant Professor of Flute at UNCG\, Boysen has had other faculty positions of note. She served on the faculty of Interlochen’s Arts Camp and Arts Academy as well as the Atlantic Music Festival in Maine. \nA native of Iowa\, Erika Boysen is based in Greensboro\, North Carolina. She received her Doctorate of Musical Arts from the University of Michigan\, where her dissertation recitals featured collaborations with spoken word\, dance\, and visual art. Further education comes from the New England Conservatory and University of North Carolina School of the Arts. She is grateful to her former teachers\, who include Amy Porter\, Paula Robison\, Dr. Tadeu Coelho\, Dr. Kimberly Helton\, and Mark Sparks.

Patrons must sit in their assigned seat.\n\n\n\nFace Coverings\nFace coverings that cover the nose and mouth are strongly encouraged\, but not required\, while inside the performance hall. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nThe 1841 Bösendorfer grand piano\nThe 1841 Bösendorfer grand piano represents the piano builder’s craft in the era when Chopin\, Mendelssohn\, Schumann\, and Liszt were at the height of their powers. Restored by Edward Swenson of Trumansburg\, New York\, it is an early example of the work of the Viennese builder Ignaz Bösendorfer (1794-1859)\, whose firm\, founded in 1828\, still makes some of the world’s finest pianos. An expanded and strengthened descendent of the Classical-era fortepianos played by Mozart and Haydn\, it is similar to the pianos Beethoven knew during his later years. It has a range of six and a half octaves with 81 keys of ivory and ebony\, leather-covered hammers attached directly to the keys\, parallel stringing throughout the scale\, and pedals for lifting the dampers and shifting the keyboard (una corda). The case\, veneered in ash\, supports the tension of the strings without the assistance of an iron plate. The sound delivers clarity\, variety of color\, and the sweetness of tone for which Bösendorfer was particularly esteemed. \nAndrew Willis\, fortepiano\nPianist Andrew Willis explores the historical development of keyboard instruments and their performance practice\, maintaining a commitment to the study\, performance\, and teaching of the widest possible range of repertoire. Keenly interested in the history of the piano\, he contributes frequently to conferences\, festivals\, and concert series. He has served as president of the Southeastern Historical Keyboard Society and as a Trustee of the Westfield Center for Historical Keyboard Studies. As Covington Distinguished Professor of Music in the UNC Greensboro School of Music\, Willis teaches performance on instruments ranging from harpsichord to modern piano. He directed the biennial UNCG Focus on Piano Literature for over a decade and recently inaugurated a student Historical Performance Consort. For the Albany\, Bridge\, Claves\, Centaur\, and CRI labels he has recorded solo and ensemble music of three centuries on pianos linked historically to the chosen repertoire. Willis received the DMA in Historical Performance from Cornell University\, where he studied fortepiano with\nMalcolm Bilson\, the MM in Accompanying and Chamber Music from Temple University under George Sementovsky and Lambert Orkis\, and the BM in Piano from The Curtis Institute of Music\, where his mentor was Mieczyslaw Horszowski. \nRobert Bracey\, tenor\nRobert Bracey has performed throughout the United States and made appearances in Canada\, Russia\, Europe\, India\, and Japan. He was awarded first place in the Oratorio Society of New York’s Annual International Solo Competition at Carnegie Hall. He returned to Carnegie Hall for performances of Handel: Messiah. He made his Detroit Symphony debut at Orchestra Hall and his Kennedy Center debut in Washington\, DC. Engagements include performances with the Symphony Orchestra of India and the Paranjoti Academy Chorus at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Mumbai\, India\, the Telemann Chamber Orchestra in Tokyo and Osaka\, Japan\, Oratorio Society of New York\, Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra\, Detroit Symphony\, Grand Rapids Symphony\, Pacific Symphony\, Orlando Philharmonic\, World Youth Symphony at Interlochen\, Choral Arts Society of Washington\, ProMusica Chamber Orchestra\, Dayton Philharmonic\, Syracuse Symphony\, Wichita Symphony\, Elgin Symphony\, Southwest Florida Symphony\, North Carolina Symphony\, Winston-Salem Symphony\, Illinois Symphony\, Flint Symphony\, Midland Symphony\, East Texas Symphony\, Boise Philharmonic\, Greater Lansing Symphony\, Bach Festival Society of Winter Park\, Choral Society of Durham\, Kalamazoo Bach Festival\, and the University Musical Society in Ann Arbor\, Michigan. He holds a Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Education from Michigan State University\, a Master of Music and a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Voice Performance from the University of Michigan. He is currently Professor of Voice and Chair of the Voice Area at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. \nNicholas DiEugenio\, violin\nPraised for the “rapturous poetry” in his playing (American Record Guide) and as an “excellent” and “evocative” violinist (New York Times)\, Nicholas DiEugenio leads a versatile performing life as a chamber musician\, leader\, and soloist in music ranging from early baroque to current commissions. He performs in venues such as Glinka Hall in St. Petersburg\, Trinity Wall St.\, Freiburg’s Ensemblehaus\, and Weill Recital Hall. Together with pianist and duo partner Mimi Solomon\, Nicholas created the project “Unraveling Beethoven\,” a cycle of all ten violin sonatas combined with response works from composers Tonia Ko\, Jesse Jones\, Robert Honstein\, D.K. Garner\, and Allen Anderson. The award-winning album Unraveling Beethoven was released in 2018 by New Focus Recordings. Other featured recordings include the complete Violin Sonatas of Robert Schumann (Musica Omnia) as well as a tribute to Pulitzer prizewinner Steven Stucky (New Focus). Nicholas is a core member of The Sebastians as well as Associate Professor of Music at UNC Chapel Hill. \nBrent Wissick\, cello\nBrent Wissick is Professor of Music at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he as taught teaches cello and early music ensembles since 1982. His career includes performances with Ensemble Chanterelle\, Atlanta Baroque Orchestra\, Altlanta Symphony\, Dallas Bach Society Folger Consort\, Concert Royal\, Smithsonian Consort of Viols\, Boston Early Music Festival and American Bach Soloists as well as Collegio di Musica Sacra in Poland. He was an NEH Fellow at Harvard in Lewis Lockwood’s Beethoven Quartet Seminar\, and later did research on these works in Germany and Poland. A former student of John Hsu at Cornell University\, he has performed\, taught and adjudicated at at many of the important schools\, workshops and festivals in North America\, Australia\, Europe and Asia including 4 summers in Japan and China. His recording of Sonatas and Cantatas by Bononcini was released by Centaur and his online video article about them has been published by the Journal of Seventeenth-Century Music. He has also recorded for Albany\, Titanic\, Dux\, Radio-Bremen\, Koch International\, 3 Grammy nominated; and recorded the Chopin Cello Music on period instruments with Andrew Willis Currently\, he is Past President of the Viola Gamba Society of America\, having served as President from 2000 through 2004\, chair of the 2007 Pan-Pacific Gamba Gathering\, and a board member since 1986. The society recently granted him Lifetime Membership in 2020.

DESCRIPTION:DOWNLOAD PROGRAMVIEW ON CPVA LIVE\n\n   \n\n\n\n\nFace Coverings\nFace coverings that cover the nose and mouth are strongly encouraged\, but not required\, while inside the performance hall. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nDr. Carla LeFevre earned the DMA and MM in Voice Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Iowa and the BME in voice and horn from Central Missouri State University. She retired in 2022 after more than thirty years as voice professor at UNCG. She was formerly the primary voice teacher for the National Opera Company. \nA versatile soprano\, Carla LeFevre’s solo appearances include over fifty performances of oratorios ranging from the Bach passions to the Verdi Requiem\, and leading opera roles spanning the styles of Poppea in Handel’s Agrippina and the Governess in Britten’s Turn of the Screw. Her strength as a musician is notably demonstrated in her performances of contemporary music such as Schönberg’s highly challenging Pierrot Lunaire\, and she enjoys engaging audiences by adapting her vocal style to the Broadway genre. Dr. LeFevre has been heard in recital at various universities and concert series throughout the United States\, and was selected as national winner of the Gertrude Fogelson Cultural and Creative Arts Vocal Competition. She was also one of two national finalists in the National Federation of Music Clubs Young Artist Competition and a finalist in the National Opera Association Vocal Competition. \nStudents of Dr. LeFevre have distinguished themselves as Regional and National Grand Finalists in the Metropolitan Opera auditions\, as well as first-place winners of the Orpheus Vocal Competition\, and National NATS competitions. They have been apprentice artists for professional opera companies across the country\, such as San Francisco\, Wolf Trap\, Glimmerglass\, Pittsburgh\, Chautauqua\, Sarasota\, Central City\, Des Moines\, Saratoga\, Opera North and others. \nAn active clinician\, Dr. LeFevre has presented voice pedagogy workshops for the NATS National Conference\, Pan-European Voice Conference\, Voice Foundation Symposium and other organizations\, as well as master classes for dozens of universities across the United States\, including Florida State University\, Boston University\, Ohio State University\, Michigan State University\, University of Iowa\, etc. To date\, Dr. LeFevre has published three articles in the pedagogy column of the NATS Journal of Singing\, and her 30+ years of experience as a diction instructor recently led to her development and publication of Diction Study Cards. These 275 cards comprise individual sets for Italian\, German\, and French lyric diction that provide detailed information and samples for each of the rules of pronunciation. Additional professional activity has included extensive research focused on voice injuries/disorders and the methodology associated with appropriate therapeutic rehabilitation; as such\, she has worked with numerous injured singers.

Limited spaces are available in a two-level parking deck off Fisher Avenue. Overflow parking is available in the Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home parking lot but not if the funeral home has a service scheduled (signs will be posted). If you have no mobility issues\, please use the outer lots. \n\n\nAudiences and Tickets\nAll family and friends are welcome to attend the ceremony. Tickets are NOT required for guests. \n\n\n\nFace Coverings\nFace coverings that cover the nose and mouth are strongly encouraged\, but not required\, while inside the church. \n\n \n\n\n\n

Afterwards take a stroll over to the Weatherspoon Art Museum to see works by our graduating MFA students.
