DESCRIPTION:Since the release of his 2004 critically acclaimed CD\, When I Fall In Love\, Chris Botti has become the largest-selling American instrumental artist. His success has crossed over to audiences usually reserved for pop music\, and his ongoing association with PBS has led to four #1 jazz albums\, as well as multiple Gold\, Platinum\, and Grammy Awards. Most recently\, his latest album\, Impressions\, won the Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental. Performing worldwide and selling more than four million albums\, he has found a form of creative expression that begins in jazz and expands beyond the limits of any single genre. \nOver the past three decades\, Botti has recorded and performed with the best in music\, including Sting\, Barbra Streisand\, Tony Bennett\, Lady Gaga\, Josh Groban\, Yo-Yo Ma\, Michael Bublé\, Paul Simon\, Joni Mitchell\, John Mayer\, Andrea Bocelli\, Joshua Bell\, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler\, and even Frank Sinatra. In January 1992\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed “A Tribute to John Philip Sousa” to a capacity crowd of 2\,700 at the Concert Hall of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington\, D.C. Twice\, the Wind Ensemble earned critical acclaim from The Washington Post following concerts in the nation’s capital. The Wind Ensemble has performed throughout the eastern United States in recent years including the first-ever performance\, in 1987\, by a North Carolina collegiate ensemble in Lincoln Center\, New York City. The Wind Ensemble performed that same year in West Virginia\, Virginia\, Pennsylvania\, and Washington\, D.C. The Wind Ensemble has recorded nineteen commercially-available albums which have received widespread praise. \nIn 1985\, the Wind Ensemble performed a series of concerts with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer-conductor Karel Husa. In 1988\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed in New Orleans\, Louisiana by invitation of the College Band Directors National Association for the Southern Division convention. On a number of occasions\, the Wind Ensemble has commissioned and premiered works from leading band composers. In November of 1990\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the Southern Division of MENC convention. In February 1994\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed for a convention of the CBDNA and NBA in Williamsburg\, Virginia. In March 1999\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the national convention of the American Bandmasters Association in Melbourne\, Florida. In February 2000\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the CBDNA Southern Division Convention hosted at UNCG. In 2006\, the Wind Ensemble performed in The Music Center at Strathmore in Bethesda\, Maryland\, shared a concert with the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” in Arlington\, Virginia\, and collaborated with Karel Husa\, David Dzubay\, and Carter Pann in the performaces of their music\, including two commissions. In 2009\, the Wind Ensemble performed at the CBDNA National Convention at the University of Texas at Austin and performed additional concerts in Georgia\, Alabama\, Louisiana\, and Texas as part of a week-long tour. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n \n   \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nPianist Andrew Willis explores the historical development of keyboard instruments and their performance practice\, maintaining a commitment to the study\, performance\, and teaching of the widest possible range of repertoire. Keenly interested in the history of the piano\, he contributes frequently to conferences\, festivals\, and concert series. He is a past president of the Southeastern Historical Keyboard Society and a Trustee of the Westfield Center for Historical Keyboard Studies\, for whose International Fortepiano Competition he served as a juror. \nAs Covington Distinguished Professor of Music in the UNC Greensboro School of Music\, Willis teaches performance on instruments ranging from harpsichord to modern piano. He directed the biennial UNCG Focus on Piano Literature for over a decade and recently inaugurated a student Historical Performance Consort. For the Albany\, Bridge\, Claves\, Centaur\, and CRI labels he has recorded solo and ensemble music of three centuries on pianos linked historically to the chosen repertoire. His recording of Op. 106 for the first complete Beethoven sonata cycle on period instruments was hailed by The New York Times as “a ‘Hammerklavier’ of rare stature.” \nWillis received the D.M.A. in Historical Performance from Cornell University\, where he studied fortepiano with Malcolm Bilson\, the M.M. in Accompanying and Chamber Music from Temple University under George Sementovsky and Lambert Orkis\, and the B.M. in Piano from The Curtis Institute of Music\, where his mentor was Mieczyslaw Horszowski. \n\nThe vibrant UNCG Orchestra program has long been recognized for performance excellence\, adventurous programming\, and high artistic standards. A diversity of offerings allow students the opportunity to perform repertoire for ensembles ranging from the largest cornerstone and contemporary works for full orchestra\, to intimate pieces for chamber orchestra\, to string orchestra. \nStudents in the UNCG Orchestra program are dedicated to the performance\, study and cultivation of orchestral music of the highest quality. The UNCG Orchestras offer outstanding performances throughout the year and enhance the institutional spirit and community of UNCG. We seek to promote music education in the state of North Carolina and in our region by supporting secondary school orchestra programs and other organizations through our outreach activities and other annual events on campus.

SUMMARY:Marcus Printup
DESCRIPTION:Marcus Printup\, trumpet with UNCG Jazz Ensemble I\nMarcus Printup (trumpet) was born and raised in Conyers\, Georgia. His first musical experiences were hearing the fiery gospel music his parents sang in church. While attending the University of North Florida on a music scholarship\, he won the International Trumpet Guild Jazz Trumpet competition. In 1991 Printup’s life changed when he met his mentor\, the great pianist Marcus Roberts who introduced him to Wynton Marsalis\, which led to Printup’s induction into the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in 1993. Printup has recorded with Betty Carter\, Dianne Reeves\, Eric Reed\, Madeline Peyroux\, Ted Nash\, Cyrus Chestnut\, Wycliffe Gordon\, and Roberts\, among others. He has recorded several records as a leader: Song for the Beautiful Woman\, Unveiled\, Hub Songs\, Nocturnal Traces\, The New Boogaloo\, Peace in the Abstract\, Bird of Paradise\, London Lullaby Ballads All Night\, and A Time for Love. He made his screen debut in the 1999 movie Playing by Heart and is included on the film’s soundtrack. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n \n   \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nBorn and raised in Conyers\, Georgia\, Marcus Printup‘s first musical experiences came from hearing the fiery gospel music his parents sang in church. He would later discover jazz as a senior in high school. \nMarcus attended Georgia State University\, then transferred to the University of North Florida on a music scholarship. It was during his studies at UNF that he competed and won the prestigious International Trumpet Guild Jazz Trumpet Competition. \nIn 1991\, Mr. Printup’s life would change when he met his mentor and friend-to-be\, the incomparable pianist Marcus Roberts. Mr. Roberts introduced him to world renowned trumpeter\, Wynton Marsalis which in time led to the invitation to join the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in 1993. Marcus has been a member ever since. \nAmong many others\, Mr. Printup has performed/recorded with Betty Carter (an inductee into Ms. Carter’s first Jazz Ahead class in 1994)\, Dianne Reeves\, Eric Reed\, Cyrus Chestnut\, Wycliffe Gordon\, and Marcus Roberts. \nMr. Printup has led multiple recordings on several major record jazz labels: \n\nBlue Note Records Song for the Beautiful Woman\, Unveiled\, Hub Songs\nNagel Heyer Records The New Boogaloo\nSteeplechase Records Peace In The Abstract\, Bird of Paradise\, London Lullaby\, Ballads All Night\, A Time for Love\, Homage\, Desire\, Lost\, and his latest Young Bloods.\n\nMr. Printup continues to be in demand nationally and abroad as a facilitator/educator for clinics and masterclasses. He is  involved with educational programs such as  JALC’s Essentially Ellington Competition\, The New School (Manhattan)\, The International Trumpet Guild and Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead at the Kennedy Center. \nWith his wife Riza Printup\, the Printups created RiMarcable Publications LLC through which they have published their first children’s book and arrangements for big band and jazz combos. \nIn 2005\, a proclamation was granted to Mr. Printup declaring August 22nd Marcus Printup Day in his home town of Conyers\, GA.

A diversity of offerings allow students the opportunity to perform repertoire for ensembles ranging from the largest cornerstone and contemporary works for full orchestra\, to intimate pieces for chamber orchestra\, to string orchestra. \nStudents in the UNCG Orchestra program are dedicated to the performance\, study and cultivation of orchestral music of the highest quality. The UNCG Orchestras offer outstanding performances throughout the year and enhance the institutional spirit and community of UNCG. We seek to promote music education in the state of North Carolina and in our region by supporting secondary school orchestra programs and other organizations through our outreach activities and other annual events on campus.
