Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n\n\n\n\n \nSFC James J. Miller (’08 MM) is originally from Pontiac\, Michigan. He joined Pershing’s Own in December 2013. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina – Columbia; a master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro\, where he was a graduate assistant and a Professional Artist Certificate from the North Carolina School of the Arts. Miller has been a prizewinner in numerous flute competitions including: MTNA Young Artist\, SC Flute Society. He was the winner of the Concerto Competition at both the University of South Carolina and University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He has performed with the Western Piedmont Symphony\, Fayetteville Symphony\, Winston-Salem Symphony\, and Nova Chamber Orchestra. He has also been a featured soloist at the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston\, SC and London International Poetry Festival in London\, England. Miller joined the Army in July 2011. Before joining Pershing’s own he served in the 8th United States Army Band in Seoul\, Korea and The United States Training and Doctrine Command band at Ft. Eustis\, VA. SFC Miller is in active soloist\, chamber musician and clinician. When not making music he enjoys volunteering\, running\, cooking\, and traveling.

UNCG’s Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program celebrates this watershed year with saxophonist Rahsaan Barber joining Jazz Ensemble II for a diverse program of music by Thad Jones\, Dexter Gordon\, Wes Montgomery\, Tito Puente\, Milt Jackson\, Sam Rivers\, and many more. \n\nSince earning a Master’s Degree in Jazz Performance from the Manhattan School of Music in 2005\, Rahsaan Barber (Assistant Professor\, UNC Chapel Hill) has set out on a singular path of musical excellence in performance\, composition\, education\, and entrepreneurship. Rahsaan enjoys a career that encompasses an ever-expanding range of musical styles\, including jazz\, blues\, funk\, classical\, fusion\, soul\, Latin\, and world music. \nRahsaan’s passionate\, sincere\, and studious approach to music-making has garnered professional appearances onstage alongside such heavyweights as Christian McBride\, Brian Blade\, the Temptations\, Delfeayo Marsalis\, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra\, Duffy Jackson\, Winard Harper\, Kirk Franklin\, Meghan Trainor and the Wooten Brothers. The saxophonist has performed on many of the world’s most prestigious stages for music including The Ryman\, The Village Vanguard\, Birdland\, Lincoln Center\, the Kennedy Center\, the Montreux Jazz Festival\, and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. Rahsaan joined the ranks of the nation’s rising jazz stars as the leader of his own quintet\, Everyday Magic\, and co-leader of the groundbreaking Nashville-based Latin-jazz septet El Movimiento. Rahsaan has entered the ranks of the nation’s premier jazz artists following several celebrated releases\, most recently including “Mosaic\,” a double-disc collection of original works released in April of 2021\, featuring trumpeter Nathan Warner and trombonist Roland Barber\, Rahsaan’s twin brother. Prior to the release of “Mosaic\,” Barber received critical acclaim for “The Music In The Night” (2017) and “Everyday Magic\,” (2011) both released on the saxophonist’s record label\, Jazz Music City\, which he founded to showcase his hometown’s (Nashville\, TN) diverse and impressive musical talent. In addition to his own jazz outfits\, the saxophonist founded The Nashville Salsa Machine in 2016\, a twelve-member ensemble featuring Music City’s most celebrated Latin-music performers. Barber is also an in-demand saxophonist for recording sessions and touring work\, most recently completing a year-long tour with pop icon Kelly Clarkson and multiple tours with Lauren Daigle. \nRahsaan currently serves as Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies and Saxophone at the University of North Carolina. Barber has taught extensively at the collegiate level for over a decade\, including six years of instruction at Belmont University\, where he began his collegiate teaching career as instructor jazz and classical saxophone\, jazz ensembles\, and commercial music styles at the impressive age of twenty-five. Barber has given masterclasses and concerts at multiple Jazz Education Network conferences and at numerous colleges and universities\, including the University of Tennessee at Knoxville\, the University of Memphis\, Lipscomb University\, UNC-Pembroke\, UNC-Wilmington\, Indiana University\, The University of Wisconsin (OshKosh)\, the University of Evansville\, and many more. In addition\, Rahsaan has served as Vice-President of the Tennessee Jazz and Blues Society and as a board member for the Nashville Jazz Workshop’s Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion panel. \n\nThe Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program at UNCG is a unique and innovative undergraduate jazz program designed to emulate the traditional process of learning jazz\, through a combination of mentorship\, real-world playing experiences\, and a communal approach to learning. Although the program is housed in one of the largest music schools in the Southeast\, it is kept intentionally small\, resulting in an intensive and highly personalized learning environment. \n\n\n\nAudience Note\nPatrons must sit in their assigned seat. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n\n\n\n\n \nDr. Abigail Pack\, Professor of Horn at UNCG\, native of Roanoke\, Virginia\, received her training from East Carolina University (BMA)\, University of Iowa (MM)\, and University of Wisconsin-Madison (DMA) where she was a Bolz Teaching Fellow. Before assuming her current position at UNCG she was Horn Faculty at James Madison University from 2001 to 2008. She has also been on faculty at Knox College in Galesburg\, IL; Western State College in Gunnison\, CO; and taught in the Gunnison Watershed School District. An avid symphony player\, Dr. Pack has held positions with the Barton Symphony Orchestra\, Quad Cities Symphony Orchestra\, Des Moines Symphony Orchestra\, the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra\, and currently performs with the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra\, the Wintergreen Summer Music Festival Orchestra\, the Southwest Chamber Orchestra\, and the Opera Roanoke Orchestra. Other venues have included performances with the Iowa Brass Quintet\, Western Slope Brass Band\, and Massanutten Brass Band. Recent performance and presentation highlights include the National Flute Association (Washington D.C. with the Montpelier Winds)\, the International Horn Symposium (University of Cape Town\, South Africa)\, the International Midwest Band and Orchestra Conference (Chicago)\, and the Kennedy Center of The Performing Arts (Washington). \n\nThe renowned UNCG Bands are dedicated to the performance\, study\, and cultivation of wind band music of the highest quality\, and are a serious and distinctive medium of musical expression. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n\n\n\n\n \nTrumpet artist Garrett Klein has performed across the United States and Asia as a soloist\, chamber player\, and orchestral musician. He is currently serving as Assistant Professor of Trumpet at UNC Greensboro where he leads the Trumpet Studio\, coaches the Graduate Brass Quintet\, and directs the Trumpet Ensemble. Previously Garrett served on the faculties of St. Olaf College and Gustavus Adolphus College. \nGarrett is a member of the Dallas Brass\, an internationally recognized touring ensemble. Dallas Brass has a legacy of presenting uplifting performances\, which span a wide array of musical styles. In addition to performing shows across the country\, Dallas Brass demonstrates a steadfast commitment to music education by working to inspire students of all ages while on tour. \nOutside of touring with Dallas Brass\, Garrett has performed with the Charlotte Symphony\, Winston-Salem Symphony\, the North Carolina Brass Band\, and the Carolina Brass. He has also appeared as a guest musician with The Phoenix Symphony\, the Tucson Symphony Orchestra\, the New World Symphony\, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra\, and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. Additionally\, Garrett is an Associate Artist with the Rodney Marsalis Philadelphia Big Brass. A new music advocate\, Garrett has worked with composers to commission new works for trumpet\, presenting newly composed works at International Trumpet Guild Conferences. \nGarrett earned his DMA and MM degrees at Arizona State University\, along with a Certificate in Music Theory Pedagogy. Prior to ASU\, he studied at the prestigious Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in Singapore and St. Olaf College in Minnesota. Garrett Klein is an endorsing artist for Conn-Selmer and proudly performs on Vincent Bach trumpets. \n\nThe UNCG Wind Ensemble is a highly select concert band of fifty performers majoring in music at the UNCG School of Music. Performers in the current Wind Ensemble are drawn from sixteen states\, Slovenia\, and Hong Kong. The ensemble has enjoyed a distinguished record of performance throughout its history. In January 1992\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed “A Tribute to John Philip Sousa” to a capacity crowd of 2\,700 at the Concert Hall of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington\, D.C. Twice\, the Wind Ensemble earned critical acclaim from The Washington Post following concerts in the nation’s capital. The Wind Ensemble has performed throughout the eastern United States in recent years including the first-ever performance\, in 1987\, by a North Carolina collegiate ensemble in Lincoln Center\, New York City. The Wind Ensemble performed that same year in West Virginia\, Virginia\, Pennsylvania\, and Washington\, D.C. The Wind Ensemble has recorded nineteen commercially-available albums which have received widespread praise. \nIn 1985\, the Wind Ensemble performed a series of concerts with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer-conductor Karel Husa. In 1988\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed in New Orleans\, Louisiana by invitation of the College Band Directors National Association for the Southern Division convention. On a number of occasions\, the Wind Ensemble has commissioned and premiered works from leading band composers. In November of 1990\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the Southern Division of MENC convention. In February 1994\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed for a convention of the CBDNA and NBA in Williamsburg\, Virginia. In March 1999\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the national convention of the American Bandmasters Association in Melbourne\, Florida. In February 2000\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the CBDNA Southern Division Convention hosted at UNCG. In 2006\, the Wind Ensemble performed in The Music Center at Strathmore in Bethesda\, Maryland\, shared a concert with the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” in Arlington\, Virginia\, and collaborated with Karel Husa\, David Dzubay\, and Carter Pann in the performaces of their music\, including two commissions. In 2009\, the Wind Ensemble performed at the CBDNA National Convention at the University of Texas at Austin and performed additional concerts in Georgia\, Alabama\, Louisiana\, and Texas as part of a week-long tour. The Wind Ensemble performed at the 2011 National Convention of the American Bandmasters Association and the 2013 National Conference of the College Band Directors National Association hosted in Greensboro. Most recently\, the UNCG took a twelve day concert tour through the Czech Republic\, Austria\, and Italy\, the highlight of which was a concert in Prague’s famed Dvořák Hall.

Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n\n\n\n\nMusician\, Composer\, Bandleader\, Educator and Activist Roxy Coss received the 2022 Downbeat Critics’ Poll “Rising Star” award on Soprano Saxophone\, is a recipient of the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award\, the Hothouse Magazine & Jazzmobile “Tenor Saxophone” Award\, and is a Jazziz Magazine “Artist to Watch”. She has performed around the world\, headlining at the Newport Jazz Festival\, Melbourne Big Band Festival\, NYC Winter JazzFest\, BRIC JazzFest\, Earshot Jazz Festival\, San Jose Jazz Summerfest\, Jazz Standard\, and Jazz Showcase. Coss has performed as a side musician with Jazz greats and luminaries including Clark Terry\, Billy Kaye\, Maurice Hines\, Rufus Reid\, Louis Hayes\, Gene Perla\, Houston Person\, Claudio Roditi\, Bill Charlap\, Geoffrey Keezer\, Willie Jones III\, Jeremy Pelt\, Darcy James Argue\, the DIVA Jazz Orchestra. \nRoxy has six albums out under her own name\, including her latest release\, Disparate Parts (Outside in Music)\, which was met with critical acclaim. Her fifth album Quintet (Outside in Music)\, received a 4-Star review from Downbeat. The Roxy Coss Quintet\, featuring some of the world’s finest young musicians\, is the first-ever recipient of the Emerging Artist Project\, a four-year grant from the Local 802 Musicians Union. They largely perform Coss’ original compositions. Her composition work can also be found on Jeremy Pelt’s recording\, Face Forward\, Jeremy (High Note). \nCoss grew up in Seattle\, WA where she attended the acclaimed Garfield High School Jazz Ensemble\, and graduated from William Paterson University in 2008 with a BM in Jazz Studies/Performance. She has been living in the New York area since 2004. Roxy currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Jazz Education Network (JEN)\, is Jazz Faculty at The Juilliard School\, and is the President & Founder of Women In Jazz Organization (WIJO). She is also an endorsing Artist for P. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n\n\n\n\n \nTyler Reece is a Junior Double Bass Performance Major at UNCG\, where he is a student of Craig Brown. Tyler has recently won a fellowship position with the Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle\, a section position with the Salisbury Symphony and substitutes in regional orchestras around the state. When not practicing or performing\, he enjoys playing basketball and travelling. \n\nThe vibrant UNCG Orchestra program has long been recognized for performance excellence\, adventurous programming\, and high artistic standards. A diversity of offerings allow students the opportunity to perform repertoire for ensembles ranging from the largest cornerstone and contemporary works for full orchestra\, to intimate pieces for chamber orchestra\, to string orchestra. \nStudents in the UNCG Orchestra program are dedicated to the performance\, study and cultivation of orchestral music of the highest quality. The UNCG Orchestras offer outstanding performances throughout the year and enhance the institutional spirit and community of UNCG. We seek to promote music education in the state of North Carolina and in our region by supporting secondary school orchestra programs and other organizations through our outreach activities and other annual events on campus.
