SUMMARY:Samara Joy
DESCRIPTION:A native of the Bronx\, Samara Joy became entranced by classic R&B as a child and cut her teeth as a singer in her church’s gospel choir. And while her family history is deeply musical—her grandparents helmed the Philadelphia gospel group the Savettes\, and her father\, the musician and songwriter Antonio McLendon\, has produced\, composed and arranged his own astounding original work—she didn’t delve into the jazz tradition until a college student at SUNY Purchase. During her studies there\, she won the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition\, which introduced her to the larger jazz scene as a rising star to watch. She was heard\, by audiences and critics alike\, as a masterful interpreter of jazz standards and a rightful heiress of the sound\, technique\, and charisma that defined her jazz heroines—including Vaughan\, Betty Carter\, Abbey Lincoln\, and Carmen McRae.     \n\n\n\nJoy released her self-titled debut on the Whirlwind label in 2021\, followed a year later by Linger Awhile\, her breakout Verve debut\, of which DownBeat wrote\, “With this beautiful recording\, a silky-voiced star is born.” The album earned her a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album in addition to a headline-making win for Best New Artist. A deluxe edition of the album was released\, as well as the EP A Joyful Holiday\, which took home Grammys for Best Jazz Vocal Album and Best Jazz Performance in 2025. Her new Verve album\, Portrait\, which Joy co-produced with the veteran trumpeter/bandleader and multi-Grammy winner Brian Lynch\, showcases the intimate\, soulful chemistry that she’s developed with her touring band\, already earning her an NAACP Image Award for Best Jazz Album. She previously held the position of Instructor of Tuba and Euphonium at the University of Northern Iowa\, and has also served on the music faculties of Virginia Commonwealth University\, Virginia State University\, Longwood University\, the University of Richmond\, and Shenandoah University. Stephanie is active as a masterclass teacher and as a clinician for middle and high school bands.  \n\n\n\nStephanie is a founding member of Calypsus Brass\, a brass quintet dedicated to performing new works and providing high-quality recordings for composers. Calypsus is committed to promoting the works of composers from historically marginalized groups\, and serves as an Ensemble-in-Residence for Rising Tide Music Press. Stephanie is Principal Tuba of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony\, and has also performed with the Virginia Symphony\, the Williamsburg Symphony\, the Capital Wind Symphony\, and the Virginia Grand Military band. She has also contributed to recording projects at Spacebomb Records in Richmond\, VA. Stephanie’s recent solo performances have focused on music for tuba with electronic accompaniment\, music by women composers\, and her own transcriptions and arrangements for low brass. She has appeared as a soloist at the International Tuba Euphonium Conference\, the Northeast\, Southeast\, and Midwest Regional ITEA Conferences\, the Army Band Tuba-Euphonium Workshop\, and the International Women’s Brass Conference. Stephanie also writes and gives presentations on the topic of mindfulness in the practice and performance of music.  \n\n\n\nStephanie holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Shenandoah University\, a Master of Music degree and Artist Diploma from Yale University\, and a Bachelor of Music degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. She studied with Dr. Ross Walter\, Toby Hanks\, Mike Roylance\, Andrew Hitz\, and Michael Bunn. Paul Dooley’s Fantasy of Colors and Roger Dickerson’s Essay for Band highlight the range and expressive power of contemporary wind music. Shuying Li’s Coping Cadences will feature a sextet of UNCG faculty musicians. \n\n\n\nGabriela Ortiz’s Kauyumari\, arranged by Michael Brignolo\, draws inspiration from the blue deer of Huichol mythology. The concert concludes with John Mackey’s monumental The Frozen Cathedral\, premiered by the UNCG Wind Ensemble in 2012. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Wind Ensemble\n\n\n\n\nThe UNCG Wind Ensemble is the premier wind band of the UNCG School of Music\, uniting fifty outstanding musicians from across the United States and around the world. Its members—ranging from first‑year undergraduates to master’s and doctoral students in performance and music education—are selected through a highly competitive audition process. Ensemble musicians regularly earn top solo and chamber awards\, competitive scholarships and fellowships\, and professional positions in orchestras\, military bands\, teaching\, and arts leadership. Current students represent seventeen states\, Slovenia\, and Hong Kong. \n\n\n\nFor decades\, the ensemble has built a distinguished record of artistic excellence\, with acclaimed performances at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts\, Lincoln Center\, and leading venues throughout the eastern United States. Its catalog of more than twenty commercial recordings has received national recognition and helped position UNCG as a leader in wind band performance\, commissioning\, and recording. \n\n\n\nThe Wind Ensemble has been featured at major national and regional conferences of the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA)\, National Band Association (NBA)\, American Bandmasters Association (ABA)\, and Music Educators National Conference (MENC). The ensemble has also collaborated with prominent composers and performers\, including Pulitzer Prize–winning composer Karel Husa and other influential figures in the field. \n\n\n\nRecent highlights include performances at the Music Center at Strathmore; a joint concert with the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own”; a twelve‑day international tour through the Czech Republic\, Austria\, and Italy\, culminating in a featured performance at Prague’s renowned Dvořák Hall; and a tour of the Southern United States that concluded with an appearance at the national conference of the College Band Directors National Association. \n\n\n\nBack to Program \n\n\n\n\nUNCG Bands\nThe UNCG Bands are devoted to the performance\, study\, and advancement of wind band music at the highest artistic level. DESCRIPTION:Ben Folds is an Emmy-nominated singer-songwriter who has created an enormous body of genre-bending music\, which includes pop albums with Ben Folds Five\, multiple solo albums\, a holiday album\, and numerous collaborative records.   \n\n\n\nHe currently tours as a pop artist\, while also performing for over two decades with some of the world’s great symphony orchestras.  \n\n\n\nFolds\, who served for eight years as the first-ever Artistic Advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) at the Kennedy Center\, stepped down from his post when President Trump announced his takeover of the Center. Just days before the US presidential election\, Folds recorded two sold-out performances with the NSO\, which he released as a live album in 2025 that debuted at the top of the Billboard classical and classical crossover charts.  \n\n\n\nA New York Times best-selling author\, Folds has also created new music for film\, television\, and theatre\, including original songs for an ongoing series of animated Peanuts specials on Apple TV.   \n\n\n\nIn 2022 Folds launched a music education charitable initiative in his native state of North Carolina entitled “Keys for Kids\,” which provides funds and keyboards to existing nonprofits that offer free or affordable piano lessons to school-age children from economically disadvantaged households. She also performs the world premiere of a new piano concerto by Valerie Coleman with the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington\, D.C. Her recital appearances include Stanford Live\, Music Toronto\, Chamber Music Detroit\, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum\, Spivey Hall\, and a recital tour in China. \n\n\n\nRecognized as a leading interpreter of the piano music of Florence Price\, Cann performed the New York City premiere of Price’s Piano Concerto in One Movement with The Dream Unfinished Orchestra in July 2016 and the Philadelphia premiere with The Philadelphia Orchestra and Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin in February 2021. Her recording of the concerto with the New York Youth Symphony won a GRAMMY Award in 2023 for Best Orchestral Performance. She won a GRAMMY Award in 2025 for Beyond the Years: Unpublished Songs of Florence Price\, recorded with soprano Karen Slack\, which features 19 unpublished songs composed by Price. Her acclaimed debut solo album Revival\, featuring music by Price and Margaret Bonds\, was released in May 2023 on the Curtis Studio label. She has also recorded two Price piano quintets with the Catalyst Quartet as a part of the quartet’s UNCOVERED series. A champion of emerging talent\, Cann and cellist Tommy Mesa recorded Our Stories\, an album of new works by five living composers of color\, which was released in November 2023. \n\n\n\nA celebrated chamber musician\, Cann has collaborated with leading artists including the Catalyst\, Dover\, and Juilliard string quartets\, Imani Winds\, violinists Timothy and Nikki Chooi\, soprano Karen Slack\, and mezzo-soprano J’Nai Bridges. She joined the Curtis piano faculty in 2020 as the inaugural Eleanor Sokoloff Chair in Piano Studies. She is also on the piano faculty of the Manhattan School of Music. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDaniel Ericourt Artist Residency in Piano\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Ericourt Residency honors the artistry of the great French pianist Daniel Ericourt (1903-1998)\, who held the position of Artist in Residence at the UNCG School of Music from 1963 through 1976. His legacy as an artist teacher is documented by one of his former students\, Dr. Judy Hutton\, in her 1993 DMA treatise. In 1994\, at the age of ninety\, Ericourt played a memorable all-Debussy recital as the guest artist for the UNCG Focus on Piano Literature symposium.  His recordings of the complete piano music of Debussy were reissued on the Ivory Classics label in 2003 to honor the centenary of his birth. \n\n\n\nThe Ericourt Residency was founded in 2007 through a gift from Mr. Bill Heins\, a friend of Daniel Ericourt and a cousin of Mr. Ericourt’s widow Jayne Winfield Ericourt. Jayne continues to be a beloved presence at many School of Music keyboard events. \n\n\n\nSince its founding in 2007\, the Ericourt Residency has brought these renowned artists to UNCG: José Feghali\, Jon Nakamatsu\, Jacques Després\, Pascal Rogé\, David Owen Norris\, Charles Richard-Hamelin\, Daria Rabotkina\, Craig Sheppard\, Lydia Artymiw\, Sara Davis Buechner\, Inna Faliks\, and Drew Petersen.

Haven is the recipient of a 2021 Barlow Endowment for Music Composition award with composer David Biedenbender and a 2021 Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Grant with composer Ivette Herryman Rodríguez. She is a dedicated teacher and serves as Assistant Professor of Voice and Choral Music at UNC Greensboro. There she maintains an active voice studio and she conducts the UNCG Treble Ensemble. Kesselman also co-directs the Heretic’s Guide to Musicianship: A Score Study and Interpretation Workshop with Kevin Noe. A frequent guest clinician at colleges and universities across the United States\, Kesselman specializes in voice teaching\, leadership\, entrepreneurship\, musicianship\, young composer mentoring\, chamber music\, audience development\, programming\, interdisciplinary collaboration\, harnessing vulnerability in performance\, and community engagement. \n\n\n\nKesselman holds degrees in voice performance and music education from Rice University and Michigan State University. Its members—ranging from first‑year undergraduates to master’s and doctoral students in performance and music education—are selected through a highly competitive audition process. Ensemble musicians regularly earn top solo and chamber awards\, competitive scholarships and fellowships\, and professional positions in orchestras\, military bands\, teaching\, and arts leadership. Current students represent seventeen states\, Slovenia\, and Hong Kong. \n\n\n\nFor decades\, the ensemble has built a distinguished record of artistic excellence\, with acclaimed performances at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts\, Lincoln Center\, and leading venues throughout the eastern United States. Its catalog of more than twenty commercial recordings has received national recognition and helped position UNCG as a leader in wind band performance\, commissioning\, and recording. \n\n\n\nThe Wind Ensemble has been featured at major national and regional conferences of the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA)\, National Band Association (NBA)\, American Bandmasters Association (ABA)\, and Music Educators National Conference (MENC). DESCRIPTION:Carmen Bradford with UNCG Jazz Ensemble I\n\n\n\nCarmen Bradford is jazz royalty\, a 2024 Count Basie Orchestra Family member\, and Grammy Award® winner for Basie Swings the Blues: The Count Basie Orchestra. She’s been nominated five times for Grammy Awards and is the recipient of the Los Angeles Jazz Society’s Jazz Vocalist Award. With her body of work\, which reflects her vast experience\, versatility\, and technical brilliance\, she has carved out her place in jazz history and continues to contribute to the preservation of this uniquely American art form.  \n\n\n\nShe was discovered and hired by William “Count” Basie when she was just twenty-two; she went on to be the featured vocalist with the legendary Count Basie Orchestra for nine years and has continued to perform with them regularly throughout her career. All four of her Grammy Award nominations are for albums with the Count Basie Orchestra\, including two in the 1980s and a third\, Big Boss Band\, with guitarist George Benson. (She and Benson performed the classic duet\, “How Do You Keep the Music Playing\,” on the Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.)
