Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n \n   \n\n\n\nThe UNCG Opera Theatre presents Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas\, joined by students in the School of Music Popular Music and Technology program\, who will reimage some of Purcell’s melodies before the opera itself. \nCome see the dynamic story of the love of Dido\, the Queen of Carthage\, for the Trojan hero Aeneas and her despair when he abandons her. Dido is Purcell’s only real opera and an important work in the scope of Baroque Opera. \n\nThe UNCG Opera Theatre\, under the direction of David Holley\, annually produces at least four operas. In the fall\, “Tour to the Schools” reaches over 10\,000 area school children and a chamber opera is presented in November (Amahl and the Night Visitors in even years). In the spring\, the School of Music and the School of Theatre join forces on a large-scale opera\, and the UNCG Opera Theatre collaborates with the Greensboro Opera to present GO’s signature outreach program\, “Opera at the Carolina\,” in which every fifth grader in Guilford County (6\,000+) attends a live opera at the downtown Carolina Theatre. \nSince 1993\, UNCG’s productions have regularly earned awards in the National Opera Association’s Annual Opera Production Competition\, including seven first place awards for: Susannah\, Little Women\, Orpheus in the Underworld\, The Consul\, Dialogues of the Carmelites\, Amahl and the Night Visitors\, and Don Giovanni. Second place was awarded for our productions of Gianni Schicchi\, Albert Herring\, La vida breve\, L’Enfant et les Sortilèges\, and Philip Glass’s Galileo Galilei\, which Mr. Glass attended\, and he worked with our cast. \nIn the spring of 2009\, the UNCG Opera Theatre proudly presented the world premiere of Libby Larsen’s Picnic which was commissioned in 2004 by a generous grant from the Charles A. Babock Foundation. \n

Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n \n   \n\n\n\nMeraki is a chamber ensemble co-founded by former classmates Anastasia Christofakis\, clarinet\, and Elizabeth G. Hill\, piano. They are recipients of Chamber Music America’s 2018 Classical Commissioning Grant for their current collaboration with award-winning composer\, Jerod Tate. The ensemble is dedicated to awakening cultural compassion through music. Meraki’s recurring focus is the music of “Essence” that evokes the culture and history of people through their folk sound and musical language. Their debut album Within was recently released by Equilibrium Records and features works by Anthony R. Green\, Jamie Wind Whitmarsh\, and Jerod Tate\, that were commissioned by the duo. \nAnastasia Christofakis has performed around the world\, but only buys bagels in her hometown of Syosset\, New York. Having purchased a down coat while getting her Masters in Chicago\, Illinois and several pairs of flip flops for her Doctorate in humid Tallahassee\, Florida\, Anastasia finally settled into the temperate climate of Greenville\, South Carolina where she serves as Assistant Professor of Clarinet at Furman University. Anastasia is a sought-after educator\, most recently taking on the role of Coordinator of the Chamber Music Intensive at the New England Music Camp\, in Sidney\, Maine. Outside of her teaching schedule\, Anastasia enjoys collaborating with others to expand the scope and diversity of new music\, as well as its accessibility. In addition to her role with Meraki\, Anastasia also performs and serves as the Vice President of Education and Community Outreach of What is Noise – an award-winning Pierrot ensemble made up of musicians from around the world. A non-profit organization\, What is Noise focuses its mission on building community through music. She is a Royal Global Performance Artist and performs on Firebird clarinets and Brian Corbin clarinet products. \nA recognized leader in chamber music and contemporary music advocacy\, pianist Elizabeth G. Hill has performed across the US and Europe in service of her life’s work: joining cultures together through music. In addition to her role as co-founder of Meraki\, She is also pianist for Balance Campaign\, a chamber ensemble whose focus lies exclusively on commissioning and performing works by marginalized composers. She currently also serves as the pianist for the National Philharmonic. An active pedagogue\, Elizabeth is a private piano teacher in the DC-metro area\, and is a member of the Collaborative Piano Faculty at the Heifetz International Music Institute. Originally raised in Anchorage\, Alaska\, Elizabeth holds degrees from Mary Baldwin College (B.A.)\, James Madison University (M.M.)\, and The Catholic University of America (D.M.A. with a specialization in Chamber Music).

SUMMARY:Community Mood Project Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Community Mood Project \nSolo Exhibition by Rae Cozart\n\nNovember 14 – 18\, 2023\n  \n  \nI like to explore escapism in my installations\, making an alternative space of being for my mind. At 20 years old I began using art to explore my experiences with neurodivergence. By sharing a peek into my experiences\, I am advocating for myself and my community. \nThe RX Garden and Community Mood Blanket are community-based projects. After a session with my therapist at the time\, I realized I was on auto-pilot when responding after she asked me “How are you?” I would reply “Good” even if I wasn’t. I’ve noticed how societally “How are you?” is more like a call and response than an active question. This inspired the Community Mood Blanket. My first therapist introduced me to Gloria Wilcox’s feelings wheel to help me name my feelings. I made an anonymous form with the Feelings Wheel for people to use whenever they need it. I used yarn corresponding to the colors on the wheel and each response is a color row added to the blanket. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n   \n\n\n\n\n\n \nSteven Stusek\, saxophone\, is Associate Professor of Music at the University of North Carolina Greensboro\, where he is a member of the Eastwind Quintette d’Anches and the Red Clay Saxophone Quartet. Originally from Oshkosh\, Wisconsin\, he received his Bachelor’s degree in saxophone performance from Indiana University. Before beginning a Master’s degree in saxophone and chamber music at Arizona State University\, Steve spent a year in Paris studying at the Paris Conservatory (Conservatoire Nationale Superior de Musique de Paris) and the Conservatoire de le Région de Paris\, where he was awarded the Prix d’Or à l’Unanimité in Saxophone Performance. After living in the Netherlands for almost eight years he returned to Indiana University and was awarded a DMA in Saxophone in 2001. He has served on the faculties of Ball State University\, Middlebury College\, the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. He has been on the UNCG faculty since 1999. As a soloist\, Steve has appeared with the Eastern Music Festival and more recently with the University of South Carolina Wind Ensemble as part of the North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial conference. He has been the principal saxophonist for the Eastern Music Festival and the Greensboro Symphony for the past ten years. In 2000\, he won the prestigious Dutch Chamber Music Competition as part of the saxophone-accordion duo 2Track with accordion virtuoso Otine van Erp. Together they have performed throughout the Netherlands\, the US and on Dutch radio. Steve teamed up with pianist Inara Zandmane and saxophonist Susan Fancher to produce the critically acclaimed recording Louder than Words – music for two saxophones and piano. Steve’s teachers have included Eugene Rousseau\, Joseph Wytko\, David Baker\, Larry Teal\, Daniel Deffayet\, Jean-Yves Formeau\, and Leroy Wolter. Steve is the Past-President of the North American Saxophone Alliance. \n\nThe renowned UNCG Bands are dedicated to the performance\, study\, and cultivation of wind band music of the highest quality\, and are a serious and distinctive medium of musical expression. Keenly interested in the history of the piano\, he contributes frequently to conferences\, festivals\, and concert series. He is a past president of the Southeastern Historical Keyboard Society and a Trustee of the Westfield Center for Historical Keyboard Studies\, for whose International Fortepiano Competition he served as a juror. \nAs Covington Distinguished Professor of Music in the UNC Greensboro School of Music\, Willis teaches performance on instruments ranging from harpsichord to modern piano. He directed the biennial UNCG Focus on Piano Literature for over a decade and recently inaugurated a student Historical Performance Consort. For the Albany\, Bridge\, Claves\, Centaur\, and CRI labels he has recorded solo and ensemble music of three centuries on pianos linked historically to the chosen repertoire. His recording of Op. 106 for the first complete Beethoven sonata cycle on period instruments was hailed by The New York Times as “a ‘Hammerklavier’ of rare stature.” \nWillis received the D.M.A. in Historical Performance from Cornell University\, where he studied fortepiano with Malcolm Bilson\, the M.M. in Accompanying and Chamber Music from Temple University under George Sementovsky and Lambert Orkis\, and the B.M. in Piano from The Curtis Institute of Music\, where his mentor was Mieczyslaw Horszowski. \n\nThe vibrant UNCG Orchestra program has long been recognized for performance excellence\, adventurous programming\, and high artistic standards. A diversity of offerings allow students the opportunity to perform repertoire for ensembles ranging from the largest cornerstone and contemporary works for full orchestra\, to intimate pieces for chamber orchestra\, to string orchestra. \nStudents in the UNCG Orchestra program are dedicated to the performance\, study and cultivation of orchestral music of the highest quality. DESCRIPTION:Marcus Printup\, trumpet with UNCG Jazz Ensemble I\nMarcus Printup (trumpet) was born and raised in Conyers\, Georgia. His first musical experiences were hearing the fiery gospel music his parents sang in church. While attending the University of North Florida on a music scholarship\, he won the International Trumpet Guild Jazz Trumpet competition. In 1991 Printup’s life changed when he met his mentor\, the great pianist Marcus Roberts who introduced him to Wynton Marsalis\, which led to Printup’s induction into the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in 1993. Printup has recorded with Betty Carter\, Dianne Reeves\, Eric Reed\, Madeline Peyroux\, Ted Nash\, Cyrus Chestnut\, Wycliffe Gordon\, and Roberts\, among others. He has recorded several records as a leader: Song for the Beautiful Woman\, Unveiled\, Hub Songs\, Nocturnal Traces\, The New Boogaloo\, Peace in the Abstract\, Bird of Paradise\, London Lullaby Ballads All Night\, and A Time for Love. He made his screen debut in the 1999 movie Playing by Heart and is included on the film’s soundtrack. Saxophonist Julieta Eugenio\, Trumpeter Marcus Printup\, and Saxophonist Tim Warfield will come to Greensboro for residencies with students and concerts which will be open to the public.

Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n \n   \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nBorn and raised in Conyers\, Georgia\, Marcus Printup‘s first musical experiences came from hearing the fiery gospel music his parents sang in church. He would later discover jazz as a senior in high school. \nMarcus attended Georgia State University\, then transferred to the University of North Florida on a music scholarship. It was during his studies at UNF that he competed and won the prestigious International Trumpet Guild Jazz Trumpet Competition. \nIn 1991\, Mr. Printup’s life would change when he met his mentor and friend-to-be\, the incomparable pianist Marcus Roberts. Mr. Roberts introduced him to world renowned trumpeter\, Wynton Marsalis which in time led to the invitation to join the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in 1993. Marcus has been a member ever since. \nAmong many others\, Mr. Printup has performed/recorded with Betty Carter (an inductee into Ms. Carter’s first Jazz Ahead class in 1994)\, Dianne Reeves\, Eric Reed\, Cyrus Chestnut\, Wycliffe Gordon\, and Marcus Roberts. \nMr. Printup has led multiple recordings on several major record jazz labels: \n\nBlue Note Records Song for the Beautiful Woman\, Unveiled\, Hub Songs\nNagel Heyer Records The New Boogaloo\nSteeplechase Records Peace In The Abstract\, Bird of Paradise\, London Lullaby\, Ballads All Night\, A Time for Love\, Homage\, Desire\, Lost\, and his latest Young Bloods.\n\nMr. Printup continues to be in demand nationally and abroad as a facilitator/educator for clinics and masterclasses. He is  involved with educational programs such as  JALC’s Essentially Ellington Competition\, The New School (Manhattan)\, The International Trumpet Guild and Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead at the Kennedy Center. \nWith his wife Riza Printup\, the Printups created RiMarcable Publications LLC through which they have published their first children’s book and arrangements for big band and jazz combos. \nIn 2005\, a proclamation was granted to Mr. Printup declaring August 22nd Marcus Printup Day in his home town of Conyers\, GA.

Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n \n   \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nThe popular “Harvest Home” concert\, which is free and open to the public\, celebrates the themes of bounty\, harvest\, family\, and community\, and will feature singers from a variety of campus ensembles. \nThe Gothic Revival First Presbyterian Church is crafted largely from brick and stone to create what author Gerald Allen called “a loose interpretation of the cathedral at Albi in southern France.” New York architect Hobart Upjohn\, principal designer\, collaborated with architect Harry Barton. Barton designed many UNCG campus buildings\, such as UNCG Auditorium and Brown (Music) Building. \n\nThe mission of the UNCG Choirs is dedicated to the teaching\, performance\, study and cultivation of choral music of the highest quality representing not just the western choral canon but also choral music of other cultures by a diverse body of historical and new composers. We believe that the UNCG Choirs are a serious and distinctive medium of musical expression\, of vital service and importance to its members and to UNCG. Through ensemble performance\, we strive to create an environment of trust\, communication\, and expressive freedom\, to present outstanding performances throughout the year\, and to enhance the institutional sprit and character of UNCG. To music as an art and a profession\, the UNCG Choirs seek to bring increasing artistry\, understanding\, and respect by efforts within our own immediate sphere and by providing leadership and sponsorship to school choral programs and through cooperation with all other agencies pursuing similar musical goals.
