Through a four-week intensive course that meets for 14+ hours every weekend\, students work through preconceived notions about their own image-making and artistic practices\, spending large blocks of time drawing in response to prompts or guidelines and then discussing the learning process with peers and this year’s Drawing Marathon instructor\, Mariam Stephan. SUMMARY:“Elements of Soneo Theory: Vocal Improvisation Strategies in Salsa Music” • Irna Priore Music and Culture Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:IRNA PRIORE LECTURE SERIES\n \n\nThe importance of philanthropy has never been greater. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n \n   \n\n\n\n\n\nSalsa music’s soneos are improvisatory spaces in which lead singers (soneros) perform impressive feats of vocal pyrotechnics in cyclic alteration with a choral refrain. This paper develops a set of tools for interpreting soneos\, inviting analysts to examine the sung stories of salsa music as a multivalent tapestry woven of sound\, language\, and gesture. Centering venerated soneros like Benny More\, Celia Cruz\, and Ismael River\, Dr. Mitchell explores standard ways of manipulating vocal styles\, melodic shapes\, rhythmic gestures\, and ensemble relationships on the fly during a soneo improvisation. These techniques combine with the cyclic repetition schemes and linear intensification processes scripted by the arrangement\, giving rise to unique energetic shapes\, which an analyst may then bring into expressive dialogue with the song’s gestural and linguistic media. \n\nDr. Nathaniel Mitchell is Lecturer of Music Theory at the UNC Greensboro School of Music. He comes to the School of Music from Temple University where he was Adjunct Professor of Music Theory. He has also held professional appointments at the University of Delaware and Princeton University in the area of Music Theory. \nMitchell’s research focuses on the cognitive foundations of musical creativity in a variety of genres\, including opera\, bluegrass\, and video games. His research has appeared in Music Theory Spectrum (“The Volta: A Galant Gesture of Culmination”)\, the Oxford Handbook of Public Music Theory (“/r/musictheory: Making Music Theory on Reddit.com”)\, and SMT-Pod (“Moderating Musical Discussions on Reddit: An Interdisciplinary Conversation”)\, and a video essay on the Animal Crossing video game series is forthcoming in SMT-V. \nMitchell received his PhD in Music from Princeton University\, where his dissertation on musical form in eighteenth-century opera was awarded the Holmes/ D’Accone Dissertation Fellowship from the American Musicological Society. He also holds an MM in Music Theory from Indiana University as well as a BM in Piano Performance and Music Theory from Furman University.

Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n \n   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nBassoonist Dr. Jacqueline Wilson is an active performer\, pedagogue\, collaborator\, and advocate. She currently serves as Principal Bassoonist of the Washington Idaho Symphony and Assistant Professor of Bassoon at Washington State University where she performs with the Solstice Faculty Wind Quintet. As an active soloist and chamber musician\, she regularly presents recitals\, masterclasses\, and clinics including engagements at the International Double Reed Society Conference (Boulder\, CO\, Tampa\, FL\, Columbus\, GA\,)\, the International Alliance for Women in Music Conference (Corvallis\, OR)\, the Meg Quigley Bassoon Symposium (Tucson\, AZ\, Los Angeles\, CA)\, and the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York\, NY). She is also a founding member of Ensemble 337\, an innovative bassoon and marimba duo with percussionist Dr. Christopher Wilson. An eager contributor to the double reed community\, Dr. Wilson currently serves as Vice President of the International Double Reed Society\, a Co-Executive Director of the Meg Quigley Vivaldi Competition and Bassoon Symposium\, and co-hosts the Double Reed Dish podcast with oboist Dr. Galit Kaunitz. \nAs an avid supporter of new music\, Dr. Wilson (Yakama) frequently collaborates with composers on the creation of new works to expand the repertoire of the bassoon. She is especially passionate about embracing diversity in her performances by elevating music featuring underrepresented perspectives and lived experiences\, with a special focus on collaborating with Indigenous composers. In this capacity\, she has premiered\, commissioned\, and recorded works by composers Juantio Becenti\, Connor Chee\, Louis W. Ballard\, and Raven Chacon\, among others. These efforts can be heard on her debut album\, Works for the Bassoon by Native American Composers (WSU Recordings). Expansion of this work was supported by a WSU New Faculty Seed Grant in the form of an international Indigenous artistic collaboration with Māori composers\, as well as an Artist Trust Fellowship to fund the commissioning of a concerto for bassoon and strings by Connor Chee. She also actively composes new pieces and creates resources that facilitate the performance of works from the 20th century and beyond. Wilson’s composition Dance Suite for Solo Bassoon was awarded the 2022 PatsyLu Prize for outstanding work by a BIPOC composer in the 41st Search for New Music Competition by the International Alliance for Women in Music. Her article\, “Strategies for Learning Luciano Berio’s Sequenza XII\,” co-authored with Dr. Christin Schillinger (Ithaca College)\, has been published in The Double Reed and the Journal de L’Association Bassons (France). Similarly\, her dissertation\, an analysis and performance guide of Sofia Gubaidulina’s Concerto for Bassoon and Low Strings\, has been utilized by noteworthy bassoonists worldwide. \nDr. Wilson holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Bassoon Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Iowa. She is also a graduate of Boston University’s College of Fine Arts and Eastern Washington University. Her principal teachers include Benjamin Coelho\, Matthew Ruggiero\, and Lynne Feller-Marshall.

Lauded for her “intelligence\, integrity and all-encompassing technical prowess” (New York Times)\, “thoughtful artistry in the full service of music” (Washington Post)\, and “astounding virtuosity” (Philippine Star)\, Japan’s InTune magazine sums up: “Buechner has no superior.” \nIn her twenties Ms. Buechner earned a bouquet of top prizes at the world’s premiere international piano competitions — Queen Elisabeth (Brussels)\, Leeds\, Mozart (Salzburg)\, Beethoven (Vienna)\, and Sydney. She was a Bronze Medalist of the 1986 Tschaikowsky Competition in Moscow and the Gold Medalist of the 1984 Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition. Ms. Buechner has performed in every state and province of North America as recitalist\, chamber musician and soloist with top orchestras. Her career has spanned North and South America\, Europe\, Asia\, and Australia. \nSara Davis Buechner joined the faculty of Temple University’s Boyer College of Music and Dance in 2016\, after previously teaching at the Manhattan School of Music\, New York University and the University of British Columbia. As a proud transgender woman\, Ms. Buechner also appears as a speaker and performer at important LGBTQ events and has contributed interviews and articles about her own experience to numerous media outlets worldwide. \n\nThe Daniel Ericourt Artist Residency in Piano at the UNC Greensboro School of Music honors the legacy of the great French pianist Daniel Ericourt (1903-1998)\, who was Artist-in-Residence at the UNC Greensboro School of Music from 1963 through 1976. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n \n   \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n \nDr. Erika Boysen is an international performer\, educator and collaborator who is the Assistant Professor of Flute at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. Known for her verve and energy while teaching\, Erika has previously served as faculty at the Interlochen Arts Academy and Interlochen Arts Camp\, Northwestern Michigan College and Ann Arbor School for the Performing Arts. \nCommitted to developing new and innovative ways of presenting and teaching the traditional model of classical flute\, the majority of her research and scholarship focuses on cross-disciplinary collaboration between the arts. Through movement\, singing and acting\, she promotes an approach to education and performance that highlights multiple aspects of artistic expression. \nIn demand as a clinician and speaker\, she has been a featured artist at the Montana Flute Festival\, Eastern Carolina Flute Symposium and Iowa Flute Festival. In addition\, she has published articles in Flute Talk Magazine and Physics Education Journal and presented at the North Carolina Music Educators Association Conference and Wild Acres Flute Retreat. \nErika has toured across the United States and Europe performing in a variety of chamber\, orchestral and improvisation-based ensembles. Currently\, as a member of the UNCG East Wind Quintet\, Seen/Heard Trio and COLLAPSS Ensemble (Collective for Happy Sounds)\, she is dedicated to championing music of living composers. Erika has received orchestral fellowships from the Aspen Music Festival\, Texas Music Festival and Brevard Music Festival having worked with conductors: Christian Arming\, David Robertson\, Esa-Pekka Salonen\, Robert Spano and Hugh Wolff. These orchestral and chamber pursuits are complemented by her appearances at ArtX Detroit\, Meadowbrook\, and Culture Lab Festivals as a part of Shara Nova’s indie rock/alternative pop band\, My Brightest Diamond. \nHer first solo debut album\, Reimagining the Album\, will be released via an online application featuring newly commissioned works for the singing/moving flutist by composers: David Biedenbender\, Mark Engebretson\, Jane Rigler and Sam L. Richards. In addition\, she can be heard on the Blue Griffin and Arts Laureate Recording labels. \nA native of Iowa\, Dr. Boysen received her Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Michigan\, Master of Music from the New England Conservatory and Bachelor of Music from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.

He is currently serving as Assistant Professor of Trumpet at UNC Greensboro where he leads the Trumpet Studio\, coaches the Graduate Brass Quintet\, and directs the Trumpet Ensemble. Previously Garrett served on the faculties of St. Olaf College and Gustavus Adolphus College. \nGarrett is a member of the Dallas Brass\, an internationally recognized touring ensemble. Dallas Brass has a legacy of presenting uplifting performances\, which span a wide array of musical styles. In addition to performing shows across the country\, Dallas Brass demonstrates a steadfast commitment to music education by working to inspire students of all ages while on tour. \nOutside of touring with Dallas Brass\, Garrett has performed with the Charlotte Symphony\, Winston-Salem Symphony\, the North Carolina Brass Band\, and the Carolina Brass. He has also appeared as a guest musician with The Phoenix Symphony\, the Tucson Symphony Orchestra\, the New World Symphony\, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra\, and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. Additionally\, Garrett is an Associate Artist with the Rodney Marsalis Philadelphia Big Brass. A new music advocate\, Garrett has worked with composers to commission new works for trumpet\, presenting newly composed works at International Trumpet Guild Conferences. \nGarrett earned his DMA and MM degrees at Arizona State University\, along with a Certificate in Music Theory Pedagogy. Prior to ASU\, he studied at the prestigious Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in Singapore and St. Olaf College in Minnesota. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n \n   \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nHonduran clarinetist and composer Daniel Garcia began his musical study at the age of 11 at the National Music School of Honduras. He has performed with orchestras in Latin America and the US\, and in 2022 joined North Carolina’s Western Piedmont Symphony as 2nd Clarinet. Daniel\, who is an endorsed artist for Steuer Reeds\, won the 2015 MasterWorks Festival Concerto Competition and made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2021 as First Prize winner of the Golden Classical Music awards. He has won other top prizes in the Charleston International Music Competition\, the BTHVN Wien Competition\, the Valencia Awards Music Competition\, the London Classical Music Competition\, the International Mozart Competition Vienna\, Swiss International Music Competition\, the UNCG Student Artist Competition and the Raleigh Symphony “Rising Star” Competition. \nDaniel’s compositional voice takes a tonal approach\, with melody as the main pillar and it is influenced by modernism and some of the most known composers of the twentieth century. His works have been performed by Susan Hoskins\, Jorge Diez & Ryan Johnson among others. Daniel is currently a Graduate Teaching Assistant and MM Candidate at UNC Greensboro\, where he studies clarinet with Anthony Taylor\, Luke Ellard & Andy Hudson and composition with Alejandro Rutty & Mark Engebretson. He previously earned his BM in Clarinet Performance from the Schwob School of Music in 2022\, where he was a Woodruff Scholar and studied clarinet with Lisa Oberlander and composition with James Ogburn. \n\nThe vibrant UNCG Orchestra program has long been recognized for performance excellence\, adventurous programming\, and high artistic standards. A diversity of offerings allow students the opportunity to perform repertoire for ensembles ranging from the largest cornerstone and contemporary works for full orchestra\, to intimate pieces for chamber orchestra\, to string orchestra. \nStudents in the UNCG Orchestra program are dedicated to the performance\, study and cultivation of orchestral music of the highest quality. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n \n   \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nThe UNCG Wind Ensemble is a highly select concert band of fifty performers majoring in music at the UNCG School of Music. Performers in the current Wind Ensemble are drawn from sixteen states\, Slovenia\, and Hong Kong. The ensemble has enjoyed a distinguished record of performance throughout its history. In January 1992\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed “A Tribute to John Philip Sousa” to a capacity crowd of 2\,700 at the Concert Hall of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington\, D.C. Twice\, the Wind Ensemble earned critical acclaim from The Washington Post following concerts in the nation’s capital. The Wind Ensemble has performed throughout the eastern United States in recent years including the first-ever performance\, in 1987\, by a North Carolina collegiate ensemble in Lincoln Center\, New York City. The Wind Ensemble performed that same year in West Virginia\, Virginia\, Pennsylvania\, and Washington\, D.C. The Wind Ensemble has recorded nineteen commercially-available albums which have received widespread praise. \nIn 1985\, the Wind Ensemble performed a series of concerts with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer-conductor Karel Husa. In 1988\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed in New Orleans\, Louisiana by invitation of the College Band Directors National Association for the Southern Division convention. On a number of occasions\, the Wind Ensemble has commissioned and premiered works from leading band composers. In November of 1990\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the Southern Division of MENC convention. In February 1994\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed for a convention of the CBDNA and NBA in Williamsburg\, Virginia. In March 1999\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the national convention of the American Bandmasters Association in Melbourne\, Florida. In February 2000\, the Wind Ensemble performed for the CBDNA Southern Division Convention hosted at UNCG. In 2006\, the Wind Ensemble performed in The Music Center at Strathmore in Bethesda\, Maryland\, shared a concert with the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” in Arlington\, Virginia\, and collaborated with Karel Husa\, David Dzubay\, and Carter Pann in the performaces of their music\, including two commissions. In 2009\, the Wind Ensemble performed at the CBDNA National Convention at the University of Texas at Austin and performed additional concerts in Georgia\, Alabama\, Louisiana\, and Texas as part of a week-long tour. The Wind Ensemble performed at the 2011 National Convention of the American Bandmasters Association and the 2013 National Conference of the College Band Directors National Association hosted in Greensboro. Most recently\, the UNCG took a twelve day concert tour through the Czech Republic\, Austria\, and Italy\, the highlight of which was a concert in Prague’s famed Dvořák Hall.

He has been an Artist/Teacher for the Eastern Music Festival since 2013 and served on the faculty of the Hot Springs Music Festival (Arkansas) from 2008–2012. He has formerly held positions with the Spokane Symphony\, the Boise Philharmonic\, Washington State University\, Eastern Washington University\, and Whitman College. Taylor’s clarinet playing can be heard on recordings on the Navona\, Centaur\, Naxos American Classics and Gothic recording labels\, and the most recent releases are two Centaur records projects with New Music Raleigh. The most recent is the world premiere recording of Brett William Dietz’s opera introspective Headcase\, and another recent release is the debut recording of composer DJ Sparr\, 21207. He can also be found on youtube; his video promoting his March 2011 basset clarinet performances of the Mozart concerto with the Winston-Salem symphony now has nearly 100\,000 views. In 2014\, Taylor was among the first performers of Donald Crockett’s Dance Concerto(please see media page for recordings). He has appeared at the International Clarinet Association ClarinetFest®\, with a notable performance of John Adams’s clarinet concerto Gnarly Buttons in 2010 and in 2011\, the world premiere of UNCG composer Alejandro Rutty’s work for Guitars\, for two clarinets and Ableton Live-based electronics. In recent years\, Taylor has been expanding his pedagogical skills through extensive study of human movement and the Alexander Technique\, and expects to complete his ATI certification as a teacher of the Alexander Technique some time during the 2016–17 academic year. Taylor holds degrees from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music\, the Florida State University and Washington State University. His former teachers include Steve Cohen\, Ron Aufmann\, Richard Hawkins\, Frank Kowalsky\, Jim Schoepflin\, and Joseph Brooks. \n \nClarinetist\, composer\, educator\, and new music collaborator Luke Ellard strives for art that continually reaches out\, valuing a relational spirit\, informed engagement\, and unapologetic authenticity. \nFor Luke\, collaboration is what gives music life. As clarinetist\, they have performed with members of Bang On a Can All Stars\, Eighth Blackbird\, International Contemporary Ensemble\, Fifth House Ensemble\, Arkansas Symphony\, and Lone Star Wind Orchestra. Their current performance projects center around their self-produced solo cross-genre/electronic band LE\, and commissioning new exciting works for the clarinet. \nTheir collaborative spirit is reflected in their life as a composer as well\, drawing inspiration from a personal and communicative place. Their music has been performed by groups such as New Trombone Collective (Blue Interjections\, finalist in the 2013 Slide Factory International Composition Contest)\, the North Texas Wind Symphony (The Seer\, concerto for Bassoon and Wind Ensemble)\, HOCKET (someone else’s days\, #What2020SoundsLike)\, the University of Texas Symphony Band (Shifting Tides)\, Michigan State University Concert Band\, Barkada Quartet (threads of execution)\, the Mother Falcon String Quartet (all I’m feeling right now\, winner of Golden Hornet Composer Lab’s String Quartet Smackdown III)\, and in collaboration with cellist Nick Photinos (haven’t yet\, Bang on a Can Summer Festival). \nDr. Ellard joined the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in the Fall of 2023 as Visiting Assistant Professor of Clarinet\, having previously served on faculty at the University of Oklahoma and Midwestern State University while teaching privately and performing in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Luke earned their Doctor of Musical Arts in Clarinet Performance with related studies in Contemporary Music and Music Entrepreneurship at the University of North Texas\, studying under Kimberly Cole Luevano. Additionally\, Luke has earned degrees from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music (James Campbell & Eric Hoeprich)\, the University of Texas at Austin (Yevgeniy Sharlat\, Dan Welcher\, & Donald Grantham)\, and Louisiana Tech University (Lawrence Gibbs\, Joe L. Come\, see for yourself the teams “in action” and enjoy some live music\, food\, and refreshments! Competition begins at 6pm\, winners will be announce by 7:30pm. \n\nTeams will compete with each other to build an installation sculpture working with a variety of reused materials from Reconsidered Goods. Five teams will be randomly selected\, each consisting of a mix of students\, faculty\, and community members. Teams will meet for the first time on opening night and work on their collaborative site-specific artwork under a time constraint (only 75 minutes)\, while spectators cheer them on. She continued her international musical training and the Academy of Music Gh. Dima in Cluj-Napoca\, Romania\, further receiving a Master of Music from Bowling Green State University and a Doctorate of Musical Arts from the University of Michigan. Over her career\, Dr. Kleiankina has obtained various awards and prizes for performance\, accompanying\, chamber music\, jazz\, composition and arrangements. \nDr. Kleiankina is currently the Teaching Professor of Piano at North Carolina State University. She has presented numerous lectures\, lecture-recitals\, and master classes internationally and in the United States at events such as the 2008 MTNA Conference in Denver and the 2011 CMS Conference in Richmond. \nKleiankina is an active solo and chamber music performer with an international career. She has performed with orchestras from Moldova\, Romania\, United States and Russia with conductors Emil Simon\, Robert Houlihan\, Zsolt Janko\, Randolph Foy and Jeffrey Meyer. Besides her interest and expertise in Classical and Romantic music\, she is an enthusiastic performer of new music promoting works of North Carolinian composers Karel Husa\, Rodney Waschka\, and J. Mark Scearce. She has appeared in new music festivals such as 2002 Sigismund Toduta Festival in Romania\, 2010 Sound Ways Festival in St. Petersburg\, Russia\, 2012 New Music Festival in Moldova\, 2014 Modern Music Festival in Santiago\, Chile.

Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n \n   \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAtlanta-based saxophonist Jack Thorpe currently serves as an Artist Affiliate of saxophone at Georgia State University and the adjunct instructor of saxophone at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. As a concerto soloist\, he has performed with the University of Illinois Symphony Orchestra\, the Stephen F. Austin State University Symphonic Orchestra\, and the Georgia State University Symphonic Wind Ensemble. As the alto player in the Versa Quartet\, Thorpe won first place in the 2020 North American Saxophone Alliance’s Quartet. In 2017\, he co-founded the Snow Pond Saxophone Quartet\, a chamber ensemble formed to represent the Frederick L. Hemke Saxophone Institute at the Snow Pond Center for the Arts to international audiences. The quartet performed throughout Japan in 2017 alongside soloist Masato Kumoi and toured the southeastern United States in 2019. Thorpe’s debut album Illusory Dreams was released on October 6\, 2023.

In 2019\, he joined the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In the role of Assistant Professor of Trumpet\, he heads the vibrant UNCG Trumpet Studio\, serves as Brass Area Chair\, and directs the UNCG Trumpet Ensemble. \nAs a former member of the esteemed Dallas Brass\, Klein toured the United States from 2017 to 2022\, presenting concerts that captivated audiences with virtuosic playing and engaging showmanship. With Dallas Brass\, Klein presented at top universities and conservatories\, performed as soloists with respected large ensembles\, and presented at several music educator conferences. \nCurrently\, Klein performs with the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra as Principal Trumpet. He is also the Principal Solo Cornet of the North Carolina Brass Band and a member of the newly formed Brass Impact ensemble. Guest appearances have come with Presidio Brass and the Rodney Marsalis Philadelphia Big Brass. As an orchestral musician\, Klein has performed with the Charlotte Symphony\, Winston-Salem Symphony\, Phoenix Symphony\, Tucson Symphony Orchestra\, New World Symphony\, Singapore Symphony Orchestra\, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra\, and Minnesota Orchestra. While a student\, Klein spent summers at the Aspen Music Festival and the National Repertory Orchestra. \nAn active soloist\, Klein has performed several solo recitals at venues throughout the country. He has also been a featured soloist with bands at UNC Greensboro\, the Minnesota Symphonic Winds\, St. Olaf Band\, St. Olaf Norseman Band\, and the Gustavus Wind Orchestra. A proud promoter of new music for trumpet\, Klein has commissioned several new works for trumpet including a concerto for trumpet and wind ensemble by composer Nathan Hudson. Klein has been invited on several occasions to perform new works at the International Trumpet Guild Conference. \nDr. Klein is in demand as an educator\, having presented masterclasses for students of all ages across the US and Southeast Asia. Prior to teaching at UNCG\, Klein taught at St. Olaf College and Gustavus Adolphus College\, both in Minnesota. With an eye to the future of trumpet pedagogy\, he has served as an artist\, adjudicator\, and consultant for the Next Generation Trumpet Competition. He has hosted the National Trumpet Competition at UNCG and has served as an adjudicator for the competition. Klein’s latest educational project is a new book of trumpet fundamentals called “Collaborative Practice Routines\,” which seeks to promote group practice and ignite a sense of community amongst trumpet students. \nKlein studied at Arizona State University\, earning the Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees\, along with a Certificate in Music Theory Pedagogy. Prior to studying at ASU\, he attended the prestigious Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in Singapore\, studying trumpet and conducting. His Bachelor of Music degree comes from St. Olaf College in Minnesota. Klein’s primary teachers have been Steven Hagen\, Dr. Martin Hodel\, Benny Nguyen\, and David Hickman. Outside of music\, Klein is a passionate tennis player and enjoys discovering links between music and tennis. Together with his wife\, Mara\, they enjoy traveling the world\, spending time in the mountains\, and playing with their dog\, Scout. \nGarrett Klein is an endorsing artist for Conn-Selmer and proudly performs on Vincent Bach trumpets.

As the first reed quintet to twice grace the Billboard Charts (2021\, 2022)\, the untamed band of 5 reed players and entrepreneurs are united by a shared passion: to make music that sparks joy and wonder. \nWinner of 7 national chamber music prizes including the 2014 Fischoff Gold Medal\, Akropolis delivers 120 concerts and educational events each year and has premiered over 130 works. DESCRIPTION:Julieta Eugenio\, saxophone with UNCG Jazz Faculty\nJulieta Eugenio is an Argentinian saxophonist based in New York. She studied at Queens College and now plays with preeminent jazz musicians. She has had the opportunity to record with such prestigious musicians as David Kikoski and Leon Parker. She won the International Women in Jazz Competition in 2017 as a member of the SIJ trio. In October 2021\, Julieta performed at the Joyce Theater for a two-week residency with the Eyal Vilner Big Band. That December\, Julieta performed at the Guggenheim Museum for the Rotunda Solstice Concert with the Eyal Vilner Big Band. She then recorded her debut album JUMP. In 2022\, the Julieta Eugenio Trio won the 2022 DCJazzPrix\, an International competition presented by DC Jazz Fest. Julieta has also toured with the SW!NG OUT show. Julieta has also been presenting her debut Album in New York with her trio at Dizzy’s\, Jazz at Lincoln Center Summer Stage\, Smalls Jazz Club\, Bushnell Park Jazz Festival in CT and has been presenting new music in Los Angeles at Sam First\, Just Jazz Series\, and ETA Highland Park. \nNo ticket required (Free)\n\nRobinson Family Visiting Jazz Artists\nA residency made possible by the Robinson Family Fund\, established by Ward Robinson (’19 PBC Jazz\, ’10 MPH) and Pamela Pittman\, is bringing three jazz luminaries to UNCG’s School of Music this year. Bringing the military tradition of brass and percussion to the concert stage\, Heritage Brass presents programs that are both exhilarating and intimate. \nRepresenting Air Force professionals serving across the globe\, Heritage Brass showcases the service’s excellence and precision in every performance throughout the eastern seaboard\, from South Carolina to Maine. The ensemble maintains a rigorous performance schedule\, presenting a diverse repertoire featuring orchestral transcriptions\, patriotic favorites\, jazz standards\, and new compositions. Whether performing at a concert hall\, educational venue\, a large sporting event\, or in support of a military function\, their innovative approach allows them to perform both as a large symphonic group and a small chamber ensemble. \nAs professional Airmen\, the musicians of Heritage Brass are committed to inspiring patriotism\, communicating Air Force priorities\, recruiting the best to serve our country\, and honoring our nation’s veterans through the power of music.
