Performing a range of works for 6 to 18 players\, from the Renaissance period through world premieres\, the ensemble functions on a professional model and performs one concert each semester. The personnel for each semester is determined by the repertoire\, allowing the finest performers on wind\, brass\, string\, percussion\, and keyboard instruments the highest-level experience possible. Faculty and guest soloists and composers frequently collaborate with the ensemble. \n\n\n\n\nDownload Program\n\n\n\nProgram Notes\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHailed for her “brilliant pianism” (Gramophone) and “acrobatic” performances (Take Effect)\, Taiwanese-American pianist Annie Jeng has performed widely as a solo and chamber musician at the Brancaleoni International Music Festival in Italy\, the Gijón International Piano Festival in Spain\, the Kennedy Center\, New York City\, China\, and at numerous academic institutions as a guest artist. As an advocate for pushing the boundaries of traditional performances\, Annie has performed and curated concerts at breweries\, parking deck rooftops\, intimate living room settings\, and other unconventional spaces\, all with the aim of making the arts more accessible and interdisciplinary. Annie has presented at Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) conferences at collegiate\, state\, and national levels\, The National Conference of Keyboard Pedagogy (NCKP)\, and College Music Society (CMS) conferences. She is the current President of Greensboro Music Teachers Association (GMTA) and serves on the board for the North Carolina Music Teachers Association (NCMTA). Annie is also the Assistant Director of Piano for the Brancaleoni International Music Festival (brancaleonifestival.com) in Piobbico\, Italy. \n\n\n\nAnnie has commissioned and premiered dozens of new works. She is the pianist of Khemia Ensemble (khemiaensemble.com)\, a contemporary chamber ensemble that is dedicated to promoting contemporary classical music by cultivating inclusive place-making\, collaborative mentorships\, and authentic storytelling through immersive\, multimedia performances. She also released the album “World Map” with Parma Recordings as the former pianist of Four Corner’s Ensemble. Her latest commissioning project\, Circles and Lines\, consists of new pedagogical works by women composers that introduces contemporary piano techniques to intermediate pianists. As a strong believer in creating a better and more equitable “normal” in the piano community\, she also founded A Seat at the Piano (ASAP)  in the summer of 2020 (aseatatthepiano.com). ASAP is a 501(c)(3) that is dedicated to the promotion of inclusion in the performance and study of solo piano repertoire. In collaboration with the Frances Clark Center for Keyboard Pedagogy\, she has co-created an online course on women composers\, been invited to speak on panels\, present workshops\, and serves on the Career Develop and Innovation subcommittee chair for NCKP.  \n\n\n\nAnnie received her DMA in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Michigan\, where she also received her MM. She earned her BM in Piano Performance with a minor in Public Health from New York University. Her primary teachers have included Logan Skelton\, José Ramón Mendez\, Miyoko Lotto\, Anne-Marie McDermott\, and Faye Bonner. She is currently Assistant Professor of Piano and Piano Pedagogy at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

A free demo/workshop at 4:00 pm in Tew Recital Hall is open to all interested music students. At 7:30 pm there will be a free public concert\, also in Tew Recital Hall. Several of our students have participated in the past and found the experience life changing. Ethno USA will be performing at the NC Folk Festival.

DESCRIPTION:Brandy Clark\n\n\n\nA GRAMMY- and CMA-winner\, Brandy Clark is one of her generation’s most esteemed songwriters and musicians. Amid yet another landmark year\, Clark won Best Americana Performance at this year’s 66th GRAMMY Awards for her song “Dear Insecurity\,” featuring eleven-time GRAMMY-winner Brandi Carlile —Clark’s first GRAMMY win. Before coming to UNC Greensboro\, she served on faculty at the University of Iowa in Iowa\, Boston College in Massachusetts\, and Ashland University in Ohio. \n\n\n\nA highly regarded performer and pedagogue\, Dr. Miller tours as a soloist\, chamber musician\, and teacher throughout the United States\, Europe\, Asia\, and South America. Her 2023 tour in Thailand promoted her newest album collaboration\, “Hans Gál: Works for Viola\, Piano\, Violin & Oboe\,” released in 2022 on Centaur Records. Also an experienced orchestral musician\, Miller has performed in many orchestras in the United States\, such as the Chicago Symphony\, Orchestra Iowa\, Quad Cities Symphony\, Jacksonville Symphony\, Portland Symphony\, Akron Symphony\, and the Cleveland Opera. She will perform with the North Carolina Opera in 2023-2024. \n\n\n\nDr. Miller is a versatile artist devoted to performing established repertoire\, new compositions\, and lesser-known works. Her 2019 album Portuguese Perspectives introduces a collection of world-premiere recordings for the oboe by Portuguese composers and includes several new commissions by Miller. This album and her 2015 release\, Modern Fairy Tales\, are available on iTunes\, Amazon\, and Spotify. American Record Guide praises her “seamless consistency in the various registers of the oboe…and sensitive phrasing and articulation.” Fanfare Magazine hails Courtney Miller as “a performer of considerable skill\, with an unfailingly lovely sound\, abundant technical ability\, and a special gift for turning notes into poetry.”   \n\n\n\nIn addition to collaborations within the field of music\, Dr. Miller has a flair for interdisciplinary work. She has collaborated with hip-hop dancer Ernest “EKnock” Phillips\, belly dancer Janelle Issis\, and most recently\, choreographer and dancer Kristin Marrs. Since 2016\, Marrs and Miller have performed in many concerts featuring oboe and dancer and have toured together throughout the United States. Perhaps her most daring collaboration yet is Psionic\, which explores interactive movement data between oboist and computer through a live stream of EEG data with composer Christopher Jette\, printmaker Terry Conrad\, and digital media designer Daniel Fine.  \n\n\n\nDr. Miller has authored articles published in the Double Reed Journal and the Journal of the American Viola Society. She has also presented recitals and papers at the College Music Society’s Northeast Regional Conference. Dr. Miller performs recitals regularly at the International Double Reed Society’s annual conferences. In 2017\, she was a featured artist at the first international conference of the Associação Brasileira de Palhetas Duplas (Brazilian Double Reed Society or ABPD). \n\n\n\nCourtney Miller has a Doctor of Musical Arts from Boston University\, a Master of Music from Cleveland Institute of Music\, and a Bachelor of Music from Florida State University. Her primary teachers include John Ferrillo\, John Mack\, and Eric Ohlsson.  \n\n\n\nDr. Miller is a member of the International Double Reed Society\, the College Music Society\, and Sigma Alpha Iota. DESCRIPTION:Trash Bash!\n\n\n\n Competitive Art Installation & Exhibition\n\n\n\nA collaboration between Greensboro Project Space and Reconsidered Goods \n\n\n\nPublic Installation/Competition: Saturday\, September 14th | 5-7P\n\n\n\nInstallations will remain on view\n\n\n\nSeptember 14 – 20\, 2024\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nMore About Trash Bash  \n\n\n\nJoin us for a public\, competitive art installation and exhibition on September 14th! Come\, see for yourself the teams “in action” and enjoy some live music\, food\, and refreshments! Competition begins at 5pm\, winners will be announce by 6:30pm.  \n\n\n\nCreative teams compete to build a site-specific art installation with various reused and repurposed materials provided by Reconsidered Goods. Each team comprises five randomly selected members and includes a mix of students\, faculty\, and community members. Teams will meet for the first time on opening night and work on their collaborative artwork under a time constraint of 75 minutes while spectators cheer them on. Each team will be assigned a specific space in the GPS gallery and receive a list of rules and challenges. A panel of judges will select the winning team. However\, each team will receive an original Reconsidered Goods Reuse Trophy. He is a regular guest of the symphonies of North Carolina\, Charlotte and Charleston. A dedicated chamber musician\, Zachary works with groups including Silicon Valley Chamber Music Festival\, Chamber Music Charleston and Electric Earth Concerts\, and is a co-founder and co-director of the Annapolis Chamber Music Festival. He is a committed advocate for new music and has performed with groups such as New York’s Argento Ensemble and in solo recitals around the world. \n\n\n\nOne of Zachary’s passions is to spread the joy of music to those who wish to learn more about it. He currently serves as the Visiting Assistant Professor of String Bass at University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Zachary has previously been appointed to the faculty of Duke University’s music department and its pre-college String School. In the summer he teaches and performs at the Luzerne Music Center in New York’s Adirondack region. Additionally\, Zachary has presented masterclasses around the country and world\, including a sustained engagement with community music schools in Ecuador and Bolivia. \n\n\n\nZachary has toured with various groups in Japan\, China\, Singapore\, and on both coasts and has worked with musicians such as John Zorn\, Kaija Saariaho\, Colin Carr\, Branford Marsalis\, Jeffery Milarsky\, George Manahan\, Claire Chase\, and the JACK Quartet. Former teachers include Kurt Muroki\, Thomas Sperl\, Rachel Calin\, Peter Dominguez\, and Kate Nettleman. \n\n\n\nZachary received his Doctorate of Musical Arts from Stony Brook University in double bass performance. He also holds a Masters from Stony Brook and a bachelor’s degree from Oberlin Conservatory. Zachary performs on a ca.1750 Italian double bass and a Victor Fetique French bow. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDescribed by The Boston Musical Intelligencer as “incisive and with innate musicality\,” pianist Alice Chenyang Xu has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in Germany\, USA\, Canada\, and throughout China. Notable concerts include solo performances and recitals at Chicago Symphony Hall\, the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series at the Chicago Cultural Center\, Corbett Auditorium in Cincinnati\, Hochschule Musik Hall in Leipzig\, Germany\, and Jordan Hall in Boston; concerto performances in Chicago Auditorium Theatre\, JIAOZI Concert Hall\, and Chengdu Concert Hall in China; and chamber music performances at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre\, Dorflinger Glass Museum\, Lincoln Center\, and Boston Symphony Hall. \n\n\n\nXu has appeared in various summer music festival around the world including Yellowbarn\, Internationale Mendelssohn-Akademie\, Art of Piano\, and Morningside Music Bridge and has collaborated with Borromeo String Quartet and members of the Cleveland Quartet\, violinist Anthony Marwood\, cellists John Myerscough and Bonnie Hampton\, soprano Lucy Shelton\, baritone William Sharp\, pianist Christina Dahl and the Chicago Chamber Musicians (CCM). Xu has worked directly with composers George Crumb\, Jörg Widmann\, Shulamit Ran\, Helen Grime\, and Mehmet Ali Sanlikol\, and performed for former Secretary of State Colin Powell under the auspices of the Eisenhower Fellowships. \n\n\n\nXu serves as the artistic director of Music on the Hills concert series in Quincy\, MA and helps raise money for various causes and people in need. Her piano duo Xubergwith her husband Miles Fellenberg has been actively performing in the east coast area such as Massachusetts\, New York\, Pennsylvania and more. They edited/rearranged the four-hands version of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 by Hugo Ulrich and premiered it in 2021. \n\n\n\nAs an active educator\, Xu has been teaching since 2006 and has taught at various music schools in Chicago and Boston. Xu also conducts an annual private piano workshop at Sichuan Conservatory of Music in China. She was invited to give a lecture recital on music education and collaborative piano at the Consulate General of the United States\, Chengdu in 2019. \n\n\n\nXu was a recipient of the Dorothy Hinton-Congleton Memorial Presidential Scholarship\, second prize-winner of the 10th Missouri Southern International Piano Competition\, third prize-winner of the 2nd SEILER International Piano Competition in Germany\, winner of 2012 Chicago College of Performing Arts Solo Competition and Concerto Competition\, winner of 2018 Borromeo Artist Award and 2020 Honors Ensemble Program at NEC. \n\n\n\nXu graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music and Roosevelt University and holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from New England Conservatory of Music. Xu oversees Piano for Non-Majors class at New England Conservatory and she serves on the piano faculty of Tufts University.

DESCRIPTION:Paul Nolen\, soprano and alto saxophonesGeoffrey Duce\, piano \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDownload Program\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPaul Nolen currently serves as Professor of Saxophone at Illinois State University where he has taught for the past 16 years. Paul has appeared as soloist\, chamber musician\, and jazz artist throughout the United States\, Canada\, Puerto Rico\, and the United Kingdom.  \n\n\n\nDr. Nolen appeared as concerto soloist at the 2012 World Saxophone Congress in Scotland with the Royal Northern College of Music Wind Ensemble\, where he premiered Dr. Roy Magnuson’s Concerto for Saxophone and Wind Ensemble. He has soloed with the San Francisco Wind Ensemble at the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles\, and the University of New Mexico Wind Ensemble at the Robb Symposium. In 2018\, he gave a consortium premiere of William Bolcom’s Concerto for Soprano Saxophone with the ISU Wind Symphony. Dr. Nolen has recorded two CD’s of Davis Maslanka’s music on Albany Records with ISU Wind Bands. They include a 2012 recording of David Maslanka’s Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Wind Ensemble and a 2018 release\, entitled Saxophone Concertos: Maslanka/Magnuson\, with the premiere recording of David Maslanka’s Concerto for Saxophone Quartet and Wind Ensemble.  \n\n\n\nDr. Nolen is also well known for his work with the award winning Iridium Quartet\, with whom he has traveled and performed across North American for ten years\, and recorded two CD’s of American music for saxophone quartet: Into Xylonia\, and Skylines\, both available on the Blue Griffin Record Label. Paul is a staunch advocate of new music and has commissioned works by composers such as William Bolcom\, Roy Magnuson\, Joshua Keeling\, David Kirkland Garner\, Peter Gilbert\, Peter Lieuwen\, Roy Magnuson\, Marcus Maroney\, David Maslanka\, Sonia Morales\, Karola Obermüller\, David Rakowski\, Ben Stonaker\, and Carl Schimmel. \n\n\n\nDr. Nolen performs regularly with the Iridium Quartet\, Peoria Symphony Orchestra\, and the Heartland Festival Orchestras. He has given numerous masterclasses and lectures throughout the United States\, including classes at the Brevard Music Festival\, and has twice led an International Saxophone Course at the Aberystwyth MusicFest in Wales\, UK. He received his Doctorate of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees from Michigan State University with Joseph Lulloff\, and his undergraduate degree in saxophone performances from the UMKC Conservatory of Music with Tim Timmons. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGeoffrey Duce is Coordinator of the Piano Area at Illinois State University. His pianism was described by Fanfare as “revelatory and a joy to listen to\,” possessing “ferocious intellect as well as technique.” He has performed in Carnegie Hall\, the Berlin Philharmonie\, the Wigmore Hall\, Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall\, Edinburgh’s Queens Hall\, and many other venues across North America and Europe\, as well as in Japan\, Hong Kong\, and Taiwan. In 2022\, he gave a solo recital debut at Ravinia. As a concerto soloist\, his appearances have included the Sinfonie Orchester Berlin in Germany\, the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra\, Olympia Symphony Orchestra\, and New York Sinfonietta in the USA\, and the Scottish Sinfonia\, Edinburgh Philharmonic\, and Dundee Symphony Orchestra in the UK. During the 2018-19 season\, he was the first Artist in Residence with the Peoria Symphony Orchestra\, with which he performed concertos by Duke Ellington and Edward MacDowell\, among others.His solo CD of Fantasies and Rhapsodies by CPE Bach\, Schubert\, John McCabe\, and Dohnanyi was released in 2023 on Albany Records. He has appeared at contemporary music festivals\, including a solo recital as the opening concert of the Dialogues Experimental Music Festival in Edinburgh\, and numerous performances of solo and chamber works at the RedNote New Music Festival in Illinois\, for example by Steven Stucky\, Eric Moe\, Steven Hartke\, and George Tsontakis. A winner of the Making Music Award from Britain’s National Federation of Music Societies and the Prix de Piano at the American Conservatory in Fontainebleau\, France\, Geoffrey Duce is also a passionate chamber musician and accompanist\, his appearances including performing at the Library of Congress in Washington\, DC\, recording for BBC Radio 3\, and previous album releases with partners including double bassist Nicholas Bayley\, the disk described by MusicWeb International as “expertly played … a truly satisfying chamber collaboration” and named their Recording of the Month\, and with tenor Justin Vickers\, Fanfare commenting “It is difficult to imagine a finer performance than this.” Originally from Edinburgh\, Scotland\, he initially studied at the Royal Northern College of Music and Manchester University before receiving a DAAD scholarship to attend the Universität der Künste Berlin\, and earned his doctorate at Manhattan School of Music. His teachers have included Sheila Desson\, Renna Kellaway\, Klaus Hellwig\, Ferenc Rados\, Solomon Mikowsky\, Nina Svetlanova\, and Phillip Kawin.He has previously served on the faculty at Manhattan School of Music\, the State University of New York (Westchester Community College)\, and Indiana University South Bend. Focusing on music based on the words of young people who witnessed the Holocaust—many of whom did not survive—the performance uses the power of music to bridge generations in active commemoration. These themes are shared with the exhibit Words\, Music\, Memory: Re(presenting) Voices of the Holocaust\, on display in the atrium outside of Tew Recital Hall.

DESCRIPTION:UNCG’s award-winning Jazz Ensembles I and II present their first concert of the 2024-25 season! The flagship big bands of the Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program are back in their home-away-from-home\, presenting a diverse program from the entire 100-year history of big band jazz music. From the crisp swing of the 1920s\, to the fusion experimentations of the 1970s\, 80s\, and beyond. Expect the unexpected from these energetic and dedicated young musicians from all across the globe. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program at UNCG is a unique and innovative undergraduate jazz program designed to emulate the traditional process of learning jazz\, through a combination of mentorship\, real-world playing experiences\, and a communal approach to learning.
