SUMMARY:Susan Fancher and Branford Marsalis\, saxophones • Guest Artist Recital
DESCRIPTION:DOWNLOAD PROGRAM\nSusan Fancher\, soprano and alto saxophones\nBranford Marsalis\, alto saxophone\nInara Zandmane\, piano \n\nROGERS\nLessons of the Sky \nPOLAK\nLargo et Allegro \nSTEINKE\nStrange Lights \nENGEBRETSON\nDuo Concertante \n  \n \n\nThe importance of philanthropy has never been greater. She has inspired and premiered over 100 new compositions and continues to collaborate with composers both young and more established to create new\, vibrant repertoire for the saxophone. Susan Fancher’s discography lists over twenty CDs on Arizona University Records\, Philips\, New World\, Lotus Records Salzburg\, Parma\, Mark Records\, Extraplatte\, and Innova Records. Her CD release “Of Erthe and Air: Susan Fancher and friends play music of Hilary Tann” on Arizona University Records features a live performance of Tann’s soprano saxophone concerto Shakkei with the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra\, performed at the World Saxophone Congress in Bangkok. \nShe has performed in many of the world’s leading venues including Sala São Paulo\, Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall\, London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall\, Vienna’s Konzerthaus\, Filharmonia Hall in Warsaw\, and the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts\, and has appeared in concert in Albania\, Austria\, Brazil\, Bulgaria\, Canada\, China\, Finland\, France\, Germany\, Ireland\, Italy\, Lithuania\, Luxembourg\, Norway\, Spain\, Sweden\, Thailand\, and throughout the US. \nBorn and raised in Albion\, New York\, Susan Fancher earned undergraduate degrees in both saxophone performance and mathematics\, as well as her Doctor of Music\, from Northwestern University\, where she was a student of Dr. Frederick Hemke. She was awarded the Médaille d’Or (Gold Medal) from the conservatory in Bordeaux\, France\, where she studied with Monsieur Jean-Marie Londeix. Susan Fancher is a Lecturing Fellow at Duke University where she teaches saxophone and entrepreneurship\, and coaches chamber music.  She is an artist clinician for the Vandoren/DANSR and Selmer companies. \n\n\nGrowing up in the rich environment of New Orleans as the oldest son of pianist and educator Ellis Marsalis\, Branford Marsalis was drawn to music along with siblings Wynton\, Delfeayo\, and Jason.  His first instrument\, the clarinet\, gave way to the alto and then the tenor and soprano saxophones when the teenage Branford began working in local bands.  A growing fascination with jazz as he entered college gave him the basic tools to obtain his first major jobs\, with trumpet legend Clark Terry and alongside Wynton in Art Blakey’s legendary Jazz Messengers.  When the brothers left to form the Wynton Marsalis Quintet\, the world of uncompromising acoustic jazz was invigorated.  Branford formed his own quartet in 1986 and\, with a few minor interruptions in the early years\, has sustained the unit as his primary means of expression.  Known for the telepathic communication among its uncommonly consistent personnel\, its deep book of original music replete with expressive melodies and provocative forms\, and an unrivaled spirit in both live and recorded performances\, the Branford Marsalis Quartet has long been recognized as the standard to which other ensembles of its kind must be measured.  \nClassical music inhabits a growing portion of Branford’s musical universe. A frequent soloist with classical ensembles\, Branford has become increasingly sought after as a featured soloist with such acclaimed orchestras as the Chicago\, Detroit\, Düsseldorf\, and North Carolina Symphonies and the Boston Pops\, with a growing repertoire that includes compositions by Debussy\, Glazunov\, Ibert\, Mahler\, Milhaud\, Rorem and Vaughn Williams.   \n\nContinue reading about Branford Marsalis\nUnder the direction of conductor Gil Jardim\, Branford Marsalis and members of the Philharmonia Brasileira toured the United States in the Fall of 2008\, performing works by Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos in commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the revered Brazilian composer’s death. Making his first appearance with the New York Philharmonic in the summer of 2010\, Marsalis was invited to join them again as soloist in their 2010‐2011 concert series\, where he demonstrated his versatility and prowess\, bringing “a gracious poise and supple tone… and an insouciant swagger” (New York Times) to the repertoire. In 2013\, Branford served as Creative Director for the Ascent Series of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra\, which included two week-long residencies as well as several concerts with the CSO.   \nIn Fall of 2014\, Branford joined the highly-celebrated Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia in Marsalis “Well-Tempered” on a 20-city US tour\, performing Baroque masterpieces by Albinoni\, Bach\, Handel\, Vivaldi\, and others. In October 2015\, Branford took on the challenging Saxophone Concerto by composer John Adams\, performing the piece with the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra. In 2016\, he traveled to Germany for a concert with the Bayerische Staatsoper at the National Theatre in Munich\, performing an array of selections including Jacob Ter Veldhuis’ Tallahatchie Concerto\, and then returned to Asia twice more that year\, first for his debut collaboration with the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong\, followed by a trip to Kuala Lumpur where he performed two concerts with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra at the Petronas Twin Towers. In Fall 2016\, he returned to his home state of Louisiana where he was invited to be a guest soloist with the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra\, presenting works by John Williams and Heitor Villa Lobos. \nAs for other public stages\, Branford spent a period touring with Sting\, collaborated with the Grateful Dead and Bruce Hornsby\, served as Musical Director of The Tonight Show Starring Jay Leno\, and hosted National Public Radio’s widely syndicated Jazz Set.  The range and quality of these diverse activities established Branford Marsalis as a familiar presence beyond the worlds of jazz and classical music\, while his efforts to help heal and rebuild New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina mark him as an artist with an uncommonly effective social vision.  Together with Harry Connick\, Jr. and New Orleans Habitat for Humanity\, Branford conceived and helped to realize The Musicians’ Village\, a community in the Upper Ninth Ward that provides homes to the displaced families of musicians and other local residents.  At the heart of The Musicians’ Village stands the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music\, a community center dedicated to preserving the rich New Orleans musical legacy containing state-of-the art spaces for performance\, instruction\, and recording.  \nSome might gauge Branford Marsalis’s success by his numerous awards\, including three Grammys and his citation as a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts.  To Branford\, however\, these are only way stations along what continues to be one of the most fascinating and rewarding journeys in the world of music.\n\n\nInāra Zandmane is one of the leading collaborative pianists of North Carolina. She has performed with such artists as Dmitry Sitkovetsky\, Augustin Hadelich\, Ray Chen\, Sergei Antonov\, Yura Lee\, Martin Storey\, Paul Coletti\, Ian Clarke\, and Branford Marsalis\, in addition to regularly performing with Blue Mountain Ensemble and in duos with saxophonist Susan Fancher and violinist Fabián López. In 2008\, Ināra teamed up with Latvian violinist Vineta Sareika on a tour leading them to Boston\, Cleveland\, and Toronto\, before culminating in an invitation-only performance at the Kennedy Center arranged by the Latvian Embassy in the United States. In 2012\, Ināra stepped in on a short notice to perform with violinist Ray Chen at the Aspen Music Festival\, followed by a recital in Lima\, Peru. In 2014\, she was invited to the International Saxophone Symposium and Competition in Columbus\, Georgia to present a recital with Vincent David.  \nMs. Zandmane is frequently invited to serve as an official accompanist at national conferences and competitions\, among them the North American Saxophone Alliance conference and MTNA National competition since 2005. She is the accompanist in residence for the Southeastern Piano Festival that takes place in Columbia\, SC every June. Ināra Zandmane is the staff accompanist at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where she performs with students and faculty more than fifty different programs per year.  \nInāra Zandmane’s solo recordings include the piano works by Maurice Ravel\, recorded together with her husband Vincent van Gelder\, and the complete piano sonatas by Alexander Scriabin. Ināra Zandmane has collaborated with leading Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks\, giving Latvian premieres of his piano works The Spring Music and Landscapes of the Burnt-out Earth and recording the latter one on the Conifer Classics label. She also can be heard in various chamber music collaborations on Navona Records and Centaur Records.

Some of her signature operatic roles include Mimí in La bohème\, Leila in Les pêcheurs des perles\, Donna Anna and Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni\, Micaëla in Carmen\, Marguerite in Faust\, and Violetta in La Traviata. An original cast member of Baz Luhrmann’s La Bohème on Broadway as Mimí\, she won a Los Angeles Theater Alliance Award and performed on the Tony Awards Presentation. \n\n\n\nBurnett was on the roster of principal artists at the Metropolitan Opera for eight consecutive seasons debuting as Bianca in La Rondine. She was a member of the closing cast of Phantom of the Opera on Broadway\, making appearances as “Carlotta Giudicelli” since 2016. \n\n\n\nIn February 2021\, Burnett released her debut album\, Love the Color of Your Butterfly\, which features musical arrangements and collaborations with some of the world’s finest jazz musicians including Christian Sands\, Sullivan Fortner Jr.\, Casey Benjamin\, and Terreon Gully who produced the project. Released on her own record label Clazz Records\, Love the Color of Your Butterfly is an amalgamation of jazz\, opera\, art song\, oratorio\, rhythm and blues\, and spirituals and introduces her concept of “Clazz\,” which encourages collaboration and redefines the parameters of genre while embracing parts of history that are erased\, widely unknown and forgotten. Love the Color of Your Butterfly has been featured in numerous publications including the Financial Times\, Playbill\, Broadway World\, Downbeat Magazine\, and Opera News. \n\n\n\nBurnett has been a guest artist and taught masterclasses at Eastern Mennonite University\, The Cinema School\, Clark University\, and Bar Harbor Music Festival. She holds an MM from the Eastman School of Music and a BA from Spelman College. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nErik Santos is a composer\, multi-instrumentalist\, singer\, producer\, and teacher\, who is active in many musical genres\, from rock and jazz\, to classical\, to electronic\, world music\, and music for theater and dance. He is the Chair of the Composition Department at the University of Michigan School of Music\, Theatre & Dance. \n\n\n\nAs the first-born in a family of musicians – father Rosendo Ejercito Santos\, Jr.\, mother Harriet\, brothers Nathan and Jason – music has always been at the core of his life practice\, both as a profession and hobby. \n\n\n\nProfessor Santos has received commissions\, prizes\, fellowships\, and other recognitions for his concert music\, including the prestigious 2020 Sousa-ABA-Ostwald Prize from the American Bandmasters Association\, the Charles Ives Scholarship\, and the Charles Ives Fellowship from The American Academy of Arts and Letters\, awards from Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI)\, the MacDowell Colony\, the Bozeman Symphony\, the Civic Orchestra of Chicago\, the Rackham Graduate School of U-M\, and the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA). \n\n\n\nBut\, in recent years\, Santos has become increasingly preoccupied with presenting music in venues other than the classical concert hall  — dance clubs\, street corners\, radio\, theaters\, churches\, museums\, cafes\, car stereos\, movies\, Internet\, iPods\, etc. — where there is more emphasis given to the interaction of music with other spontaneous sensory elements\, involving listeners at the hub of a transdimensional experience. This interest flourished in 2002 when he was invited to join the pioneering and internationally celebrated Japanese butoh company Dairakudakan: Temputenshiki (avant-garde dance/theater)\, as a resident composer—a potent collaboration that continues to this day. \n\n\n\nIn 2005\, Santos and artist/singer Toko Shiiki formed an upbeat band called October Babies\, which has performed a large variety of original multi-cultural and multi-lingual dance songs in America and Japan. (Check out their 2020 EP Find New Way\, and new videos!) They affiliated with the local Ann Arbor music label/collective Oddfellow Music\, which later became Willis Sound. Having completed 5 albums\, along with music videos and documentaries with October Babies\, Santos and Shiiki became interested in filmmaking\, and this led to the full-length movie Threshold: Whispers of Fukushima in 2015. This project focuses on the lives of several musicians who have chosen to live in their homeland of Fukushima\, Japan\, despite the devastation of earthquake and tsunami\, the threat of the failing nuclear reactor\, and even persecution by fellow human beings. By 2019\, they completed three more films inspired by creative relationships they formed in Fukushima (Over the Sky\, Passing the Baton\, and Up the Mountain)\, as well as the film We Women Weave\, about the Moonseed Movement Troupe. \n\n\n\nThe creative relationships formed in the making of Threshold have continued to grow. For example\, in 2016\, Santos and Shiiki co-organized a partnership with the University of Michigan Center for World Performance Studies\, the Center for Japanese Studies\, and SMTD\, to invite the fiery Japanese youth drum ensemble Yamakiya Taiko to perform at the University of Michigan for The Fukushima Tribute Concert/Residency. This week-long event began with a thunderous concert at the Power Center and continued with a bunch of rousing Taiko workshops around campus and town. The ensemble premiered a new work Santos wrote for them and a cadre of U-M student drummers\, called “Armadillo Flow.” Check out the video! \n\n\n\nSantos has been on the Michigan local original music scene for XX years\, with bands October Babies\, The Crossed Lines\, 16 More Miles\, and Citygoat\, and he’s hosted several long-running Open Mic stages in the area. These days\, he’s possessed by a fresh passion for practicing – learning\, unlearning\, all day every day – memorizing poetry\, investigating inventions of Bach and Bruce Lee\, and Vince Gilligan\, enjoying sound. \n\n\n\n\nWind Ensemble\nThe UNCG Wind Ensemble is a highly select concert band of fifty performers majoring in music at the UNCG School of Music. Performers in the current Wind Ensemble are drawn from sixteen states\, Slovenia\, and Hong Kong. The ensemble has enjoyed a distinguished record of performance throughout its history. In January 1992\, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed “A Tribute to John Philip Sousa” to a capacity crowd of 2\,700 at the Concert Hall of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington\, D.C. Twice\, the Wind Ensemble earned critical acclaim from The Washington Post following concerts in the nation’s capital. The Wind Ensemble has performed throughout the eastern United States in recent years including the first-ever performance\, in 1987\, by a North Carolina collegiate ensemble in Lincoln Center\, New York City. The Wind Ensemble performed that same year in West Virginia\, Virginia\, Pennsylvania\, and Washington\, D.C. The Wind Ensemble has recorded nineteen commercially-available albums which have received widespread praise.

SUMMARY:Clare Longendyke\, piano
DESCRIPTION:A pianist with “an artistic ferocity that captivated and astonished listeners” (Waverly Newspapers)\, Clare Longendyke is a soloist\, chamber musician\, and musical innovator who performs with American orchestras and on recital series around the world. Recent highlights include performances with orchestras in Minnesota\, Iowa\, Indiana\, and Virginia\, and the release of her debut solo CD in 2024\, …of dreams unveiled\, featuring works of Debussy\, Amy Williams\, and Anthony R. Green. The album debuted at #2 on the Traditional Classical Billboard Chart and was praised as “a work of remarkable pianistic invention” (The WholeNote)\, “delightfully daring\,” and “a CD that should not be missed” (EarRelevant).    \n\n\n\nA charming and charismatic performer\, Clare’s passion for the music she plays radiates through her artistry and in the way she speaks from the concert stage. She has a contagious commitment to the music of our time\, and her programming celebrates works by favorite composers of the past—Robert and Clara Schumann\, Beethoven\, and Debussy\, to name a few—while creating space for those that are paving the way towards classical music’s more inclusive future. One of the highlights of her career has been to collaborate with living composers to commission new works. She relishes the opportunity to put her stamp on pieces of music that will go on to be staples of the piano repertoire for centuries. In the last decade\, she has commissioned over 30 new solo and chamber music works and been involved in over 250 world premiere performances.  \n\n\n\nClare’s 2024/25 Season highlights include Carnegie Hall and collaborations with the Mankato Symphony Orchestra (MN) and Denver Young Artists Orchestra. Past appearances include The University of Chicago Presents\, The Schubert Club of Minnesota\, The Ordway Center for the Performing Arts (MN)\, Sandler Center for the Performing Arts (VA)\, The Palladium (IN)\, and Olin Arts Center (ME). Recent orchestral partners include Symphonicity (VA)\, Rochester Symphony Orchestra (MN)\, and the Oak Ridge Symphony (TN). Her playing has been heard on radio stations around the country\, including NPR’s Performance Today.  \n\n\n\nClare has lived and studied on both American coasts and abroad\, earning degrees at Boston University’s College of Fine Arts and her Master’s and Doctor of Music from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. An ardent Francophile and fluent French speaker\, she received the Fulbright-Harriet Hale Woolley Award in the Arts to study at the École normale de musique in Paris in 2009. She has served as Artist-in-Residence at The University of Chicago (2019–21) and the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute\, Indiana (2023–24).  \n\n\n\nFor Clare\, performance is just one aspect of her role as an ambassador for classical music in today’s world. The connections she makes on concert stages\, in classrooms\, and everywhere in between help to foster a greater sense of community for the classical music field that she cares about so deeply.
