SUMMARY:The Cadence of Form
DESCRIPTION:The Cadence of Form: Pat Wasserboehr Explores the Interplay of Form\, Space\, and Movement \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPublic Opening Reception\n\n\n\nThursday\, November 5 from 4–6 PM\n\n\n\n Artist Talk at 4:30 PM\n\n\n\n\nThe Cadence of Form: Pat Wasserboehr Explores the Interplay of Form\, Space\, and Movement \n\n\n\nAn exhibition celebrating a distinguished sculptural practice shaped by modernist traditions\, architectural principles\, and the human body.  \n\n\n\n In The Cadence of Form\, sculptor Pat Wasserboehr brings together modernist influences\, architectural sensibilities\, and references to the human body in a sustained exploration of form\, space\, and movement. Grounded in her enduring commitment to formalism\, Wasserboehr’s work examines the relationships between internal and external forms\, the spaces they define\, and the rhythms that emerge through their arrangement. Her sculptures invite viewers to consider the essential elements of three-dimensional composition\, where balance\, tension\, structure\, and movement become the primary language of expression.  \n\n\n\nWorking in stone\, plaster\, and wood\, Wasserboehr investigates the physical properties of her materials through a precise and deliberate process of modeling and construction. Her compositions explore the interplay of mass and void\, strength and suspension\, and stability and movement. Rather than relying on narrative\, she emphasizes the visual and spatial relationships that give each work its presence\, revealing how subtle shifts in form and structure can transform the experience of an object and its surrounding space.  \n\n\n\nWasserboehr’s artistic practice is informed by a distinguished academic career spanning more than four decades at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG)\, where she taught in the School of Art from 1982 to 2024. As Head of the School from 1998 to 2010\, she helped shape its development and influenced generations of artists and art educators. Her broader teaching experience includes Boston University’s School of Visual Art and the University of Massachusetts Summer Studies Abroad Program in La Napoule\, France. Throughout her career\, she has presented sculpture demonstrations and lectures at academic institutions\, conferences\, and artist residencies in the Southeast and abroad.  \n\n\n\nInternational residencies have played an important role in her professional development\, including the University of Georgia’s Summer Program in Cortona\, Italy; Salem2Salem\, organized by Salem Art Works in Salem\, New York\, and Salem\, Baden-Württemberg\, Germany; and the Dietz Atelier Residency in Eberdingen\, Germany. Since 2014\, Wasserboehr has also been engaged in the evolving field of digital stone milling and carving through residencies with the Digital Stone Project\, where she serves as a board member. This work reflects an ongoing interest in the relationship between traditional sculptural processes and emerging technologies\, expanding the possibilities of working with stone.  \n\n\n\nHer sculpture has been exhibited regionally\, nationally\, and internationally. Selected venues include the Muscarelle Museum of Art in Williamsburg\, Virginia; the Fine Arts Museum of the South in Mobile\, Alabama; the Limner Gallery in Hudson\, New York; City Gallery in Lexington\, Kentucky; and the Phoenix Gallery in Chelsea\, New York. International exhibitions have included presentations at the Cathedral of San Christoforo in Barga\, Italy; Galleria Giovanni Bonelli in Pietrasanta\, Italy; the Historischen Bibliothek von Schloss Salem in Salem\, Germany; Enterprise Square Galleries in Alberta\, Canada; and the Shaanxi Provincial Museum of Fine Arts in Xi’an\, China. Her work has also been featured in Art of the State: Celebrating the Visual Art of North Carolina\, published by UNC Press\, and she is included in Virginia Watson Jones’s Contemporary American Women Sculptors.  \n\n\n\nWith The Cadence of Form\, Wasserboehr’s sculptures offer an opportunity to experience the enduring relevance of formalist sculpture through a practice that bridges modernist thought\, architectural structure\, material investigation\, and the expressive potential of the human form. Her work demonstrates a sustained commitment to understanding how sculptural elements interact\, how space becomes an active component of composition\, and how material itself informs the visual experience.  \n\n\n\nWe are honored to present Pat Wasserboehr’s work here in North Carolina\, a state where her artistic practice and educational leadership have contributed to the development of its creative community. The Cadence of Form celebrates not only her substantial artistic legacy but also her continuing exploration of the possibilities of contemporary sculpture.  \n\n\n\nExhibition Information\n\n\n\nThe Cadence of Form Pat Wasserboehr Gatewood Gallery\, UNCG October 29 – December 4\, 2026\, hours 9-4 pm\, M-F Greensboro\, North Carolina Contact: Gallery Director\, Professor Mariam Aziza Stephan\, mastepha@uncg.edu

SUMMARY:The Steve Haines Trio with special guest Joey Calderazzo
DESCRIPTION:Experience straight-ahead jazz with The Steve Haines Trio\, featuring the powerhouse rhythm section of internationally renowned pianist Joey Calderazzo\, bassist Steve Haines and drummer Kobie Watkins. Having locked into a swinging musical language for over 15 years\, they provide a propulsive foundation that serves both the curiosity and soulfulness of the jazz tradition. The trio is joined by a heavyweight saxophonist and luminary Gregory Tardy. He brings a fresh\, creative spark to this group\, providing spontaneous melodies for the rhythm section. This performance promises an evening of world-class musicianship\, characterized by interplay\, deep grooves\, and the kind of improvisation that only happens when seasoned masters share the stage. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program at UNCG is a unique and innovative undergraduate jazz program designed to emulate the traditional process of learning jazz\, through a combination of mentorship\, real-world playing experiences\, and a communal approach to learning. Although the program is housed in one of the largest music schools in the Southeast\, it is kept intentionally small\, resulting in an intensive and highly personalized learning environment. \n\n\n\n UNCG offers the following degree programs for students interested in studying Jazz: \n\n\n\n\nBachelor of Music (B.M.) – Performance\n\n\n\nPost-Baccalaureate Certificate in Jazz Studies\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTicketPriceAdult$30.73Seniors$19.76Students$8.78Ticket prices include all ticket fees and taxes.\n\n\n\n\nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Samara Joy
DESCRIPTION:A native of the Bronx\, Samara Joy became entranced by classic R&B as a child and cut her teeth as a singer in her church’s gospel choir. And while her family history is deeply musical—her grandparents helmed the Philadelphia gospel group the Savettes\, and her father\, the musician and songwriter Antonio McLendon\, has produced\, composed and arranged his own astounding original work—she didn’t delve into the jazz tradition until a college student at SUNY Purchase. During her studies there\, she won the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition\, which introduced her to the larger jazz scene as a rising star to watch. She was heard\, by audiences and critics alike\, as a masterful interpreter of jazz standards and a rightful heiress of the sound\, technique\, and charisma that defined her jazz heroines—including Vaughan\, Betty Carter\, Abbey Lincoln\, and Carmen McRae.     \n\n\n\nJoy released her self-titled debut on the Whirlwind label in 2021\, followed a year later by Linger Awhile\, her breakout Verve debut\, of which DownBeat wrote\, “With this beautiful recording\, a silky-voiced star is born.” The album earned her a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album in addition to a headline-making win for Best New Artist. A deluxe edition of the album was released\, as well as the EP A Joyful Holiday\, which took home Grammys for Best Jazz Vocal Album and Best Jazz Performance in 2025. Her new Verve album\, Portrait\, which Joy co-produced with the veteran trumpeter/bandleader and multi-Grammy winner Brian Lynch\, showcases the intimate\, soulful chemistry that she’s developed with her touring band\, already earning her an NAACP Image Award for Best Jazz Album. Portrait also spotlights her burgeoning gifts as a lyricist in ingenious arrangements that meld her thoughtful words with music by Charles Mingus\, Sun Ra\, and her late mentor Barry Harris.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets & Pricing\n\n\n\n\n\nTicket TypeOrchestra/MezzUNCG Students$7.50Regional Students$15.00UNCG Faculty/Staff$25.00Adults$58.00Seniors/Military$48.00Children (K-12)$20.00\n\n\n\n\nPURCHASE TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n* Tickets to CVPA and UCLS events are sold exclusively through our box office locations and ETix website\, and nowhere else. Paul Dooley’s Fantasy of Colors and Roger Dickerson’s Essay for Band highlight the range and expressive power of contemporary wind music. Shuying Li’s Coping Cadences will feature a sextet of UNCG faculty musicians. \n\n\n\nGabriela Ortiz’s Kauyumari\, arranged by Michael Brignolo\, draws inspiration from the blue deer of Huichol mythology. The concert concludes with John Mackey’s monumental The Frozen Cathedral\, premiered by the UNCG Wind Ensemble in 2012. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Wind Ensemble\n\n\n\n\nThe UNCG Wind Ensemble is the premier wind band of the UNCG School of Music\, uniting fifty outstanding musicians from across the United States and around the world. Its members—ranging from first‑year undergraduates to master’s and doctoral students in performance and music education—are selected through a highly competitive audition process. Ensemble musicians regularly earn top solo and chamber awards\, competitive scholarships and fellowships\, and professional positions in orchestras\, military bands\, teaching\, and arts leadership. Current students represent seventeen states\, Slovenia\, and Hong Kong. \n\n\n\nFor decades\, the ensemble has built a distinguished record of artistic excellence\, with acclaimed performances at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts\, Lincoln Center\, and leading venues throughout the eastern United States. Its catalog of more than twenty commercial recordings has received national recognition and helped position UNCG as a leader in wind band performance\, commissioning\, and recording. \n\n\n\nThe Wind Ensemble has been featured at major national and regional conferences of the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA)\, National Band Association (NBA)\, American Bandmasters Association (ABA)\, and Music Educators National Conference (MENC). The ensemble has also collaborated with prominent composers and performers\, including Pulitzer Prize–winning composer Karel Husa and other influential figures in the field. \n\n\n\nRecent highlights include performances at the Music Center at Strathmore; a joint concert with the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own”; a twelve‑day international tour through the Czech Republic\, Austria\, and Italy\, culminating in a featured performance at Prague’s renowned Dvořák Hall; and a tour of the Southern United States that concluded with an appearance at the national conference of the College Band Directors National Association. \n\n\n\nBack to Program \n\n\n\n\nUNCG Bands\nThe UNCG Bands are devoted to the performance\, study\, and advancement of wind band music at the highest artistic level. Recognized as one of the nation’s premier collegiate band programs\, the UNCG Bands maintain an active and distinguished record of excellence through performances\, recordings\, tours\, and appearances at major conventions. \n\n\n\nThrough exemplary organization\, training\, and presentation\, the UNCG Bands offer exceptional musical experiences for our members and share outstanding performances throughout the year. Together\, we enrich the cultural life\, spirit\, and character of UNCG. \n\n\n\nThe UNCG Bands also proudly support music education across North Carolina and throughout the region by providing leadership\, mentorship\, and sponsorship to secondary school band programs and other musical organizations. \n\n\n\n\nUNCG Bands\n\n\n\n\nBack to Program
