SUMMARY:Clarence Morgan
DESCRIPTION:Falk Visiting Artist Talk: Clarence Morgan\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClarence “Morgan” Morgan is an American abstract painter whose work spans painting\, drawing\, printmaking\, and an ongoing reflective writing practice. Rooted in gesture\, intuition\, and process\, his work explores shifting relationships between order and improvisation. Through pattern\, repetition\, and fluid mark-making\, Morgan examines perceptual experience and the ways visual systems echo larger questions of time\, space\, and the natural and cosmic world.  \n\n\n\nMorgan’s paintings\, drawings\, and prints have been exhibited nationally and internationally\, with works represented in numerous public and private collections including the Cleveland Museum of Art\, the Walker Art Center\, the Minneapolis Institute of Art\, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts\, and the Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum. His recent and current representation includes GF Contemporary (Santa Fe) and Todd Bockley Gallery (Minneapolis).  \n\n\n\nHe has produced editions at Tamarind Institute (Albuquerque)\, Highpoint Center for Printmaking (Minneapolis)\, Brandywine Workshop (Philadelphia)\, and the Patton Printmaking Studio at Anderson Ranch Arts Center (Snowmass\,   \n\n\n\nColorado). Morgan has received major fellowships from the Bush Foundation\, Jerome Foundation\, McKnight Foundation\, and the Minnesota State Arts Board\, among others.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 2025 Morgan was selected as an Invited Visiting Artist at the American Academy in Rome\, a residency that extends his ongoing investigations into abstraction\, phenomenology\, cosmology\, and the embodied experience of mark-making. His parallel writing practice—composed of notes\, essays\, and studio reflections—further articulates the metaphysical and perceptual concerns that inform his visual work.  \n\n\n\nMorgan has held teaching and visiting artist appointments at numerous institutions including Yale University\, Cooper Union\, Cranbrook Academy of Art\, Stanford University\, and the University of Minnesota\, where he served as Department Chair from 2004 to 2010 and is currently Head of Drawing/Painting. He lives and works in Chicago.  \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn addition to public presentations\, artists in the UCLS series have important interactions with UNCG students\, such as holding masterclasses\, talkback sessions\, and seminars\, often just hours before performing on stage. SUMMARY:Rennie Harris Puremovement American Dance Theater
DESCRIPTION:Rennie Harris Puremovement American Dance Theater (RHPM) is the leading US street dance theater company\, and for over thirty-five years has been dedicated to preserving and disseminating hip-hop aesthetics and street dance culture through workshops\, classes\, history\, lecture demonstrations\, long-term residencies\, mentoring programs\, and public performances. With his roots in the inner-city\, Harris and RHPM present unique stories that are riveting\, intimate\, and honest. RHPM’s mission is to re-educate the public about hip-hop culture and street dance through its artistic work\, sharing the essence and spirit of street dance\, rather than the commercially exploited stereotype portrayed by the media.  \n\n\n\nDr. Lorenzo “Rennie” Harris is a leading ambassador for hip-hop. Harris grew up entrenched in hip-hop culture in all its forms—music\, dance\, language. Throughout his career\, he has embraced the culture and sought to honor its legacy\, believing that hip-hop and street dance is the purest form of movement in that it honors both African and African American-Latino culture. Harris is well versed in the vernacular of what he calls hip-hop “proper\,” as well as the various techniques of B-boy\, house\, GQ and other styles that have emerged spontaneously from the inner cities of America\, like the North Philadelphia community in which he was raised.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets & Pricing\n\n\n\n\n\nTicket TypeOrchestra/MezzUNCG Students$7.50Regional Students$15.00UNCG Faculty/Staff$20.00Adults$30.00Seniors/Military$22.00Children (K-12)$10.00\n\n\n\n\nPURCHASE TICKETS\n\n\n\n* Tickets to CVPA and UCLS events are sold exclusively through our box office locations and ETix website\, and nowhere else. SUMMARY:John Scofield and Electrospective
DESCRIPTION:John Scofield and Electrospective\n\n\n\nThrough his fifty-four-year career\, three-time Grammy Award®-winner John Scofield has occasionally detoured from the traditions of straight-ahead jazz\, exploring a blend of funk and jazz\, which has led to some of his most popular projects. In late autumn of 2026\, Scofield looks back at many of his now classic fusion groove compositions with Electrospective. Not intending to replicate the earlier fan favorites\, he plans instead to revisit them with the seasoned perspective of several decades\, culling tunes from his Blue Matter\, Uberjam\, and AGoGo bands—each responsible for a few recordings—as well as new material in the same vein. \n\n\n\nScofield looks forward to teaming up with a stellar band of colleagues\, Electrospective will rely on interpretative input from Scofield alum and super funk drummer/producer Adam Deitch (Lettuce)\, multidimensional Larry Goldings (Scary Goldings\, James Taylor) on keyboards\, and legendary bassist Oteil Burbridge (Dead & Co.\, Tedeschi Trucks\, Allman Brothers). With this repertoire so frequently (and loudly) requested by audience members\, Scofield is glad to have a band that will truly do the music justice.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets & Pricing\n\n\n\n\n\nTicket TypeOrchestra/MezzStudents$8.00Adults$28.00Seniors$18.00\n\n\n\n\nPURCHASE TICKETS\n\n\n\n* Tickets to CVPA and UCLS events are sold exclusively through our box office locations and ETix website\, and nowhere else. SUMMARY:Samara Joy
DESCRIPTION:A native of the Bronx\, Samara Joy became entranced by classic R&B as a child and cut her teeth as a singer in her church’s gospel choir. And while her family history is deeply musical—her grandparents helmed the Philadelphia gospel group the Savettes\, and her father\, the musician and songwriter Antonio McLendon\, has produced\, composed and arranged his own astounding original work—she didn’t delve into the jazz tradition until a college student at SUNY Purchase. During her studies there\, she won the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition\, which introduced her to the larger jazz scene as a rising star to watch. She was heard\, by audiences and critics alike\, as a masterful interpreter of jazz standards and a rightful heiress of the sound\, technique\, and charisma that defined her jazz heroines—including Vaughan\, Betty Carter\, Abbey Lincoln\, and Carmen McRae.     \n\n\n\nJoy released her self-titled debut on the Whirlwind label in 2021\, followed a year later by Linger Awhile\, her breakout Verve debut\, of which DownBeat wrote\, “With this beautiful recording\, a silky-voiced star is born.” The album earned her a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album in addition to a headline-making win for Best New Artist. A deluxe edition of the album was released\, as well as the EP A Joyful Holiday\, which took home Grammys for Best Jazz Vocal Album and Best Jazz Performance in 2025. Her new Verve album\, Portrait\, which Joy co-produced with the veteran trumpeter/bandleader and multi-Grammy winner Brian Lynch\, showcases the intimate\, soulful chemistry that she’s developed with her touring band\, already earning her an NAACP Image Award for Best Jazz Album. Portrait also spotlights her burgeoning gifts as a lyricist in ingenious arrangements that meld her thoughtful words with music by Charles Mingus\, Sun Ra\, and her late mentor Barry Harris.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets & Pricing\n\n\n\n\n\nTicket TypeOrchestra/MezzUNCG Students$7.50Regional Students$15.00UNCG Faculty/Staff$25.00Adults$58.00Seniors/Military$48.00Children (K-12)$20.00\n\n\n\n\nPURCHASE TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n* Tickets to CVPA and UCLS events are sold exclusively through our box office locations and ETix website\, and nowhere else.
