SUMMARY:Care and Custody Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Care and Custody: Past Responses to Mental Health \nThe National Library of Medical Exhibition\nCurated by Anne Parsons\nNovember 7 – 18\, 2023\n  \n  \nCare and Custody is a traveling banner exhibition and companion website that explores the treatment of people with mental health conditions throughout history\, especially in the United States\, bringing to light the tension that has existed between care and custody. Physicians\, advocates\, families\, and government agencies have all contributed to the shaping of mental health policies. Care and Custody examines this history to understand how the country has moved away from custodial forms of treatment\, toward more inclusive approaches\, and worked to protect the rights of people with mental health conditions. \nCare and Custody includes an education component featuring a new university module and a digital gallery that further explores selected works from the historical collections of the NLM\, which are also available in their entirety in NLM Digital Collections. \nThe National Library of Medicine produced Care and Custody: Past Responses to Mental Health. The guest curator was public historian and educator Anne E. Parsons\, PhD (UNC at Greensboro)\, who published the book From Asylum to Prison: Deinstitutionalization and the Rise of Mass Incarceration. \n  \nTo learn more\, visit our website here \nGreensboro Project Space Weekly Gallery Hours: \nTuesday\, Thursday – Friday\, 12 -5 PM \nWednesday\, 2-7 PM \nSaturday\, 2-5PM

SUMMARY:Purcell’s ‘Dido and Aeneas’ and Friends from UNCG PopTech • Opera Theatre
DESCRIPTION:DOWNLOAD PROGRAMPURCHASE TICKETS\n\n\nTickets\n\n \n\n\n\nAdult\n$10.00\n\n\nStudent\n$5.00\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n \n\nThe importance of philanthropy has never been greater. Please consider a gift to the School of Music to support our mission and ensure the future of music at UNCG. \n\n \n \n\n\n\nThe UNCG Opera Theatre presents Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas\, joined by students in the School of Music Popular Music and Technology program\, who will reimage some of Purcell’s melodies before the opera itself. \nCome see the dynamic story of the love of Dido\, the Queen of Carthage\, for the Trojan hero Aeneas and her despair when he abandons her. Dido is Purcell’s only real opera and an important work in the scope of Baroque Opera. \n\nThe UNCG Opera Theatre\, under the direction of David Holley\, annually produces at least four operas. In the fall\, “Tour to the Schools” reaches over 10\,000 area school children and a chamber opera is presented in November (Amahl and the Night Visitors in even years). In the spring\, the School of Music and the School of Theatre join forces on a large-scale opera\, and the UNCG Opera Theatre collaborates with the Greensboro Opera to present GO’s signature outreach program\, “Opera at the Carolina\,” in which every fifth grader in Guilford County (6\,000+) attends a live opera at the downtown Carolina Theatre. \nSince 1993\, UNCG’s productions have regularly earned awards in the National Opera Association’s Annual Opera Production Competition\, including seven first place awards for: Susannah\, Little Women\, Orpheus in the Underworld\, The Consul\, Dialogues of the Carmelites\, Amahl and the Night Visitors\, and Don Giovanni. Second place was awarded for our productions of Gianni Schicchi\, Albert Herring\, La vida breve\, L’Enfant et les Sortilèges\, and Philip Glass’s Galileo Galilei\, which Mr. Glass attended\, and he worked with our cast. \nIn the spring of 2009\, the UNCG Opera Theatre proudly presented the world premiere of Libby Larsen’s Picnic which was commissioned in 2004 by a generous grant from the Charles A. Babock Foundation. \n
