The Doctor of Philosophy in Music Education prepares students for careers as college-level teachers, school administrators, and other leadership positions in the profession. Students join a supportive and collegial community to engage in advanced study of music teaching, learning, and research. Each doctoral student completes core studies in music education and research and pursues electives in music-related and other disciplines, allowing for a personalized curriculum that suits students’ career aspirations while maintaining academic and scholarly excellence.
The most successful candidates for this program have one or more of the following: (a) a bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in music education, (b) at least three to five years of full time K-12 music teaching experience, (c) have or are eligible for teacher licensure.
Program Overview
The PhD in Music Education requires 54 credits or semester hours. The degree can be completed in six semesters, or three years, of full time study. Coursework is divided into Music Education Core Courses (6 credits), Music Education Electives (6 credits), Required Research Courses (9 credits), Research Electives (3 credits), Electives (18 credits), and Dissertation (12 credits). Students interested in full-time study are eligible for consideration for a teaching assistantship, and should indicate such in their letter of intent.
Licensure
Advanced Licensure in Music (D Licensure) is available upon successful completion of the degree program. To qualify for this Licensure, the candidate must have Initial Licensure and three or more years of teaching experience.
Admissions Process
Admission is a multi-step process. Application materials are submitted through The Graduate School at UNCG. Upon receipt of a complete application, the Music Education Faculty will review and determine if the student is eligible to be interviewed. If eligible, applicants will be invited to interview for 30-45 minutes with the Music Education Faculty. Applicants interested in full-time study will also be invited for a campus visit. Following the interview, an admission decision will be made and submitted to The Graduate School, which informs students of their official admission status.
