Summer Somatics – Faculty
Founder and Director of Dynamic Embodiment Somatic Movement Therapy Training (www.dynamicembodiment.org), Martha Eddy is a dance educator and Registered Somatic Movement Therapist in private practice with pre-natal women, infants, children, adults, and seniors. Martha created BodyMind Dancing© in 1986 and MOVING FOR LIFE DanceExercise for Health®/Moving for Life Dance Exercise for Cancer Recovery (www.movingforlife.org) in 1999. She co-created globalwaterdances.org with a team of five Laban Movement Analysts in 2008 coordinating performances in over 100 locations around the world. Dr. Eddy has taught in the Dance & Dance Therapy programs of NYU and Antioch from 1984 – 1991, and then on the Dance & Dance Education program of Teachers College, Columbia University for the next 10 years. At present all of her dance and somatic education teaching is affiliated with UNCG, St Mary’s College and Montclair State University. She has taught BodyMind Dancing© worldwide and at the Bates, White Mountain and other Summer Dance Festivals. It has been a full semester course at numerous universities. She has published extensively on the role of dance in the growth and development of Somatic Education and Somatic Dance, most notably her book Mindful Movement, The Evolution of Somatic Arts and Conscious Action. At the American Dance Festival she taught aspects of BodyMind Dancing as part of her special workshop on Dance Somatics and Visual Perception. She specializes in Conflict Resolution and Community Building through Dance, Neuro-Motor Development and Assessment. She is part of the Dance Education Laboratory team of the 92nd Y Harkness Dance Center. She has a doctorate in Movement Science and Education from Columbia University (with MA in Applied Physiology) and a BA in Dance Education from Hampshire College. She maintains a small private practice in NYC at Moving For Life’s Studio55C.org and performs about once a year at diverse venues including galleries, proscenium stages, and outdoor sites. Her teaching has been featured on CNN, Forbes Online, Fox & CBS News, and NBC Today, as well as in numerous publications.
