The UNCG Artistic Merit Award, sponsored by William Mangum, BFA ’77, MFA ’83, is awarded each fall to an exemplary senior level painting student to aid in the completion of an ambitious, culminating body of art. The purpose of the award is two-fold:

  • First, the award will give a promising art student the added support, encouragement and challenge to continue working rigorously as a visual artist at a time when establishing a thoughtful yet competitive work ethic and unique vision is essential.
  • Secondly, the award’s support in the creation of the substantive body of work made during the final year at UNCG would assist them as they move into a post-undergraduate life as a professional artist or as a graduate art student.

The $1000 award will be given at the start of Fall semester and will be used to fund work made during that academic year. Each UNCG Artistic Merit Award recipient is required to mount a public exhibition of their completed body of work at the end of the academic school year.
