Philip Murphy is an ethnomusicologist who primarily focuses on the intersections of sound, music, and religion. He has most recently been working with Moroccan Islamic singers and religious authorities in order to track the multiple and discrepant cosmopolitanisms which currently inform a unique Islamic nationalism in Morocco. He also has many years experience in teaching and performing American vernacular and popular music. He holds a bachelors degree in interdisciplinary studies (music, anthropology, and English literature) from Virginia Commonwealth University, a MM in ethnomusicology from The University of California Santa Barbara, and will complete his PhD in ethnomusicology from the University of California Santa Barbara in 2018.
