On view July 14, 2018-February 17, 2019.Drawn from the Weatherspoon’s collection, 1960s: A Survey of the Decade highlights various art styles and social issues that emerged in America during the turbulent decade of the 1960s. Paintings by figurative artists such as Philip Pearlstein and Alex Katz will hang alongside abstract compositions by Raymond Parker, Larry Rivers, and Al Held. Exhibition on view August 25-December 9, 2018. This fall the Weatherspoon Art Museum premieres Dread & Delight: Fairy Tales in an Anxious World, an exhibition that brings together the work of contemporary artists who use classical fairy tales to address the complexities of our lives today. While some embrace the stories’ promises of transformation and happy endings, others plumb the stories’ more troubling elements—poverty, addiction, and exploitations of power. Exhibition: Modern Roots: A Survey of Latin American Art from the Collection

Opens October 13 and continues through December 23, 2018.In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month (Sep 15-Oct 15), the Weatherspoon will showcase objects from its collection by modern and contemporary artists hailing from the diverse Latin American cultures of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Uruguay. The exhibition will focus on both figurative traditions and innovative explorations of abstraction, with surreal motifs and conceptual considerations rounding out the overview.
