Night/Day/Night

November 15, 2017 @ 11:00 am - 4:00 pm

Located in the small gallery space.

In this project Jeff Bell will create related work in two different locations at the same time. Bell will build one large object at Lump Gallery, in Raleigh, and another at the Greensboro Project Space, in Greensboro. He will begin by deconstructing a piano in each space, which he will use as source material to create the new work. Additionally, each space will be outfitted with a camera and a monitor. The camera in Greensboro will send video in real time to the monitor in Raleigh and vise-versa. Over the course of the project, he will travel back and forth to work in both locations. Visitors at one location will be able to observe the current status of the construction in both spaces. They will also be able to watch him working, even if he is at the other location. At the completion of the building portion of the project he will move the object located in Greensboro to Raleigh. Both objects will live together for a period of time and a time lapse video of both locations will be on display.

Jeff Bell sees himself as first and foremost an object maker. At the same time, he is incredibly invested in the arts in our state. As you know, there are so many exciting things taking place in North Carolina, but there is still a hesitancy for artists and the public to travel outside of their fairly small area to engage with other arts communities. The goal of this work is to highlight the relative closeness of the two communities in a very real way. Traveling back and forth, working as many hours as he is physically able, Bell wants to repeatedly feel that distance and also create an environment where greater connections can be fostered between the Triangle and the Triad.
