Joyce Liao Named Assistant Professor Of Lighting Design And Technology

College of Visual and Performing Arts Dean bruce d. mcclung has announced the appointment of Joyce Liao as Assistant Professor of Lighting Design and Technology.  

Joyce Liao is an award-winning lighting designer and educator whose lighting work has been seen both across the United States and internationally. Liao is glad to join the School of Theatre in UNC Greensboro’s College of Visual and Performing Arts to offer her theater experiences and to help young designers to develop the skills required for the challenges and opportunities provided from the modern entertainment industry.  

Liao has taught at Ilinois State University, Chinese Culture University, and Apollo Theatre Academy. Theatre lighting credits include Andy Warhol In Iran (Barrington Stage Company, Berkie Award nominee), Strings Attached, Chasing Happy (Pulse Ensemble Theatre, Theater Row), Sweat (Dallas Theater Center), Party Face starring Hayley Mills, directed by Amanda Beares (New York City Center Stage II), Hero starring Omari Hardwick (Billie Holiday Theatre), The Pill (La MaMa), Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me (Cherry Lane Studio Theatre), Soul of Soulin (Broadway, Marquee Theatre), The English Bride, Dead Dog Park (59 E 59), The Glass Menagerie, A Midsummer Night’s Dream (47 Street Theatre), and Breakfast with Mugabe (Theatre Row, Signature Theatre). Her lighting design on Brothers from the Bottom was nominated for the Audelco Award.   

Liao holds a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from the School of Theatre at Ohio University, Athens Ohio, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from Chinese Culture University, Taipei, Taiwan.
